  • Magnesium and its alloys are prone to be corroded, thus surface treatments improving corrosion resistance are always required for practical applications. As a surface treatment of magnesium alloys, plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO), creating porous stable oxide layer by a high voltage discharge in electrolyte, enhances the corrosion resistance. However, due to superhydrophilicity of the porous oxide layer, which easily allow the penetration of corrosive media toward magnesium alloys substrate, post-treatments inhibiting the transfer of corrosive media in porous oxide layer are required. In this work, we employed a hydrophobizing method to enhance the corrosion resistance of PEO treated Mg alloy. Three types of hydrophobizing techniques were used for PEO layer. Thin Teflon coating with solvent evaporation, self-assembled monolayer (SAM) coating of octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) based on solution method and SAM coating of perfluorodecyltrichlorosilane (FDTS) based on vacuum method significantly enhances corrosion resistance of PEO treated Mg alloy with reducing the contact of water on the surface. In particular, the vacuum based FDTS coating on PEO layer shows the most effective hydrophobicity with the highest corrosion resistance.

  • Recently metropolitan local governments is actively introducing urban railway's expand and light rail transit as a means of new transport system. DC electricity feeder system operating in the domestic urban railway is typically a feedback circuit consisted of the contact wire and electric railway vehicle via rail. But stray current is to be defined as a current flowing on a structure that is not part of the intended electrical circuit with respect to a given structure. Stray current is generally results from the leakage of return currents from large DC traction systems that are grounded or have a bad earth-insulated return path. At the place where the current leaves the rail and metallic structures, electrolytic corrosion may take place. This paper presents comparison analysis of field test methods based on criteria of electrolytic corrosion protection of buried metallic structures adjacent to DC traction systems.

  • In this study low voltage Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) was utilized to eliminate high voltage PEO drawbacks such as high cost, dimensional deformation and porosity. Low voltage PEO produces a thin coating which causes low corrosion resistance. In order to solve such problem, 0.1~0.6M pyrophosphates were added in a bath containing 1.4M NaOH, and 0.35M Na2SiO3. 70 V PEO was conducted at 25℃ for 3 minutes. Chemical composition, morphology and corrosion resistance of the anodized coating were analyzed. The anodized film was composed of MgO, Mg2SiO4, and Mg2O7P2. The morphology of film showed appropriately dense structure and low porosity in the anodized layers. It is found that low voltage Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation in cooperation with phosphating treatment can provide a good corrosion protection for the AZ31B magnesium alloy.

  • Pure nickel with a thickness of 1 mm was plated on type 304 stainless steels and low alloy steels (JIS G3131 SPHC) by electrolytic plating method in a circulating plating bath. Plating performance, mechanical properties, and surface characteristics were evaluated in terms of pretreatment process, anode material, pH, current density, and flow rate of the plating solution. Addition of hydrochloric acid during pre-treatment process improved the adhesion performance of plating. To improve plating efficiency, it is desirable to use S-nickel rather than electrolytic nickel. The use of S-nickel was also confirmed to be desirable for maintaining the pH and concentration of the plated solution. The defect of the plating using S-nickel anode produced pit on the surface. However, it is believed that proper control can be obtained by increasing the flow rate. Internal stress and hardness values of electrolytic nickel plating according to current density need to be carried out with further studies.

  • The effect of electrolyte on mechanical and corrosion properties of AZ91 magnesium alloy by plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) method was investigated. The coating layers formed in the silicate and the aluminate electrolytes showed porous structures. The small pores were randomly distributed on the coatings formed in aluminate electrolyte while the coatings formed in silicate electrolyte showed much bigger pores. In the aluminate electrolyte, the coatings were composed of Mg, MgO and $MgAl_2O_4$, whereas Mg, MgO, $MgAl_2O_4$ and $Mg_2SiO_4$ were identified in the coatings formed in silicate electrolyte. The hardness of coatings in the silicate electrolyte was higher than that of coating grown in the aluminate electrolyte. The AZ91 alloy coated in the silicate electrolyte had higher tensile strength and elongation than that coated in the aluminate electrolyte. In addition, the coatings formed in the silicate electrolyte showed much better corrosion resistance compared to the coatings formed in the aluminate electrolyte.

  • Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) treatment was performed on squeeze cast AZ31 alloy and $Al_{18}B_4O_{33}w/AZ31$ composite. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) was employed to characterize the surface morphology and cross-section microstructure of the coating. The phase structures of the PEO coating were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The corrosion resistance of the PEO coating was evaluated by electrochemical method. The results showed that the $Al_{18}B_4O_{33}$ whisker on the surface of the composite was decomposed and $MgAl_2O_4$ was formed in the PEO coating layer of $Al_{18}B_4O_{33}w/AZ31$ composite during PEO treatment. As a result, the electrochemical corrosion potential of the PEO coated $Al_{18}B_4O_{33}w/AZ31$ composite was increased compared with that of AZ31 alloy.

  • The study investigated the influence of current density on the corrosion-protection properties of an AZ91 Mg alloy subjected to plasma electrolytic oxidation coating. The present coatings were carried out under an AC condition at three different current densities, i.e., 100, 150, and $200mA/cm^2$. From microstructural observations, the micro cracks connecting each micro pore were pronounced on the oxide surface of the samples coated at current densities higher than $150mA/cm^2$ since increasing the current density in this study led to an increment in the relative volume fraction of the MgO compound. Based on potentio dynamic polarization and immersion tests, the sample coated at a current density of $100mA/cm^2$ showed superior corrosion resistance.

  • Ceramic oxide layers successfully were formed on the surface of cast Al alloys with high Si contents using plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) process in electrolytes containing Na2SiO3, NaOH, and additives. The microstructure of the oxide layers was systematically analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD), and energy X-ray dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). XRD analysis indicated that the PEO untreated high-silicon Al alloys (i.e., 17.1 and 11.7 wt.% Si) consist of Al, Si and Al2Cu phases whereas Al2Cu phase selectively disappeared after PEO treatment. PEO process yielded an amorphous oxide layer with few second phases including γ-Al2O3 and Fe-rich phases. The corrosion behaviors of high-silicon Al alloys treated by PEO process were investigated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and other electrochemical techniques (i.e., open circuit potential and polarization curve). Electroanalytical studies indicated that high-silicon Al alloys treated by PEO process have greater corrosion resistance than high-silicon alloys untreated by PEO process.

  • In this study, STS316L produced by a double-melting process involving vacuum induction melting (VIM) and vacuum arc remelting (VAR) was subjected to extrusion and drawing to form a tube and was subsequently electrolytic polished (EP). The grain size of the obtained STS316L without EP was approximately 55 ㎛, with no difference found after EP. The thickness of the EP layer was measured by AES and TEM, showing values of approximately 10 nm and 15 nm, respectively. After EP, the Cr/Fe and CrO/FeO ratios of the passive layer increased from 1.48 to 1.62 and from 2.15 to 2.26, respectively, while the surface roughness decreased significantly from 0.255 to 0.024 ㎛. Consequently, the corrosion rate decreased in both NaCl and HCl solutions after the EP process. Additionally, the amounts of eluted Cr and Fe ions were reduced from 1.2 to 0.8 ppb and 10.3 to 0.8 ppb, respectively. Furthermore, polarization tests revealed that STS316L treated with EP required a lower current density to reach a passive state, indicating that corrosion behavior was retarded.
