  • In lithium-ion batteries(LIB), the development of electrolytes had mainly focused on the characteristics of lithium cobalt oxide($LiCoO_2$) cathode and graphite anode materials since the commercialization in 1991. Various studies on compatibility between electrode and electrolytes had been actively developed on their interface. Since then, as they try to adopt silicon and tin as anode materials and three components(Ni, Mn, Co), spinel, olivine as cathode materials for advanced lithium batteries, conventional electrolyte materials are facing a lot of challenges. In particular, requirements for electrolytes performance become harsh and complicated as safety problems are seriously emphasized. In this report, we summarized the research trend of electrolyte materials for the electrode materials of lithium rechargeable batteries.

  • LSGM is known to show very serious interfacial reaction with other unit cell components, such as electrode, electrode functional or buffering layers. Especially, the formation of very resistive LaSr$Ga_{3}$$O_{7}$ phase at the interface of an anode and an electrolyte is the most problematic one in LSGM-based SOFCs. In this study, we investigated the interfacial reactions in LSGM-based SOFCs under different unit cell configurations. According to the microstructural analysis on the interfacial layer between an electrolyte and its neighboring component, serious interfacial reaction zone was observed. From the electrical and electrochemical characterization of the cell, we found such an interfacial reaction zone not only increased the internal ohmic resistance but also decreased the OCV(Open Cell Voltage) of the unit cell, and thus consequently deteriorated the unit cell performance.

  • One of the weak points of the Cr-doped SZO is that until now, it has only been fabricated on perovskite substrates, whereas NiO-ReRAM devices have already been deposited on Si substrates. The fabrication of RAM devices on Si substrates is important for commercialization because conventional electronics are based mainly on silicon materials. Cr-doped ReRAM will find a wide range of applications in embedded systems or conventional memory device manufacturing processes if it can be fabricated on Si substrates. For application of the commercial memory device, Cr-doped $SrZrO_3$ perovskite thin films were deposited on a $SrRuO_3$ bottom electrode/Si(100)substrate using pulsed laser deposition. XRD peaks corresponding to the (112), (004) and (132) planes of both the SZO and SRO were observed with the highest intensity along the (112) direction. The positions of the SZO grains matched those of the SRO grains. A well-controlled interface between the $SrZrO_3$:Cr perovskite and the $SrRuO_3$ bottom electrode were fabricated, so that good resistive switching behavior was observed with an on/off ratio higher than $10^2$. A pulse test showed the switching behavior of the Pt/$SrZrO_3:Cr/SrRuO^3$ device under a pulse of 10 kHz for $10^4$ cycles. The resistive switching memory devices made of the Cr-doped $SrZrO_3$ thin films deposited on Si substrates are expected to be more compatible with conventional Si-based electronics.

  • A non-volatile resistive random access memory (RRAM) device with a Cr-doped $SrZrO_3/SrRuO_3$ bottom electrode heterostructure was fabricated on $SrTiO_3$ substrates using pulsed laser deposition. During the deposition process, the substrate temperature was $650^{\circ}C$ and the variable ambient oxygen pressure had a range of 50-250 mTorr. The sensitive dependences of the film structure on the processing oxygen pressure are important in controlling the bistable resistive switching of the Cr-doped $SrZrO_3$ film. Therefore, oxygen pressure plays a crucial role in determining electrical properties and film growth characteristics such as various microstructural defects and crystallization. Inside, the microstructure and crystallinity of the Cr-doped $SrZrO_3$ film by oxygen pressure were strong effects on the set, reset switching voltage of the Cr-doped $SrZrO_3$. The bistable switching is related to the defects and controls their number and structure. Therefore, the relation of defects generated and resistive switching behavior by oxygen pressure change will be discussed. We found that deposition conditions and ambient oxygen pressure highly affect the switching behavior. It is suggested that the interface between the top electrode and Cr-doped $SrZrO_3$ perovskite plays an important role in the resistive switching behavior. From I-V characteristics, a typical ON state resistance of $100-200\;{\Omega}$ and a typical OFF state resistance of $1-2\;k{\Omega}$, were observed. These transition metal-doped perovskite thin films can be used for memory device applications due to their high ON/OFF ratio, simple device structure, and non-volatility.

  • Solution-processed tungsten oxide thin film with thickness of about 30 nm is prepared from ammonium tungstate. This layer is introduced into the interface between the poly(3-hexylthiophene):[6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT:PCBM) layer and the ITO electrode to be used as an electron blocking layer. The annealed tungsten oxide thin films at $150^{\circ}C$ and $300^{\circ}C$ show amorphous phase, while the $400^{\circ}C$ -annealed tungsten oxide film shows crystalline phase. At $150^{\circ}C$ annealing temperature, the conversion efficiency is significantly improved from 0.71% to 1.42% as the condition is changed from vacuum to air atmosphere, which is related to oxidation state of tungsten in amorphous phase. For the air annealing condition, the conversion efficiency is further increased from 1.42% to 2.01% as the temperature is increased from $150^{\circ}C$ to $300^{\circ}C$, which is mainly due to the removal of the chemisorbed water. However, a slight deterioration in photovoltaic performance is observed when the temperature is increased to $400^{\circ}C$, which is ascribed to poor electron blocking ability due to the formation of crystalline phase. It is concluded that $W^{6+}$ oxidation state and amorphous nature in tungsten oxide interlayer is essential for blocking electron effectively from the active layer to the ITO electrode.

  • [ $Bi_{1.5}Zn_{1.0}Nb_{1.5}O_7$ ] (BZN), $Bi_2Mg_{2/3}Nb_{4/3}O_7$ (BMN), and $Bi_2Cu_{2/3}Nb_{4/3}O_7$ (BCN) pyrochlore thin films were prepared on $Cu/Ti/SiO_2/Si$ substrates by pulsed laser deposition and the micro-structural and electrical properties were characterized for embedded capacitor applications. The BZN, BMN, and BCN films deposited at $25\;^{\circ}C$ and $150\;^{\circ}C$, respectively show smooth surface morphologies and dielectric constants of about $39\;{\sim}\;58$. The high dielectric loss of the films deposited at $150\;^{\circ}C$ compared with films deposited at $25\;^{\circ}C$ was attributed to the defects existing at interface between the films and copper electrode by an oxidation of copper bottom electrode. The leakage current densities and breakdown voltages in 200 nm thick-BMN and BZN films deposited at $150\;^{\circ}C$ are approximately $2.5\;{\times}\;10^{-8}\;A/cm^2$ at 3 V and above 10 V, respectively. Both BZN and BMN films are considered to be suitable materials for embedded capacitor applications.

  • Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were synthesized on different substrates (bare Si and $SiO_2$/Si substrate) to investigate dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) applications as counter electrode materials. The synthesis of MWNTs samples used identical conditions of a Fe catalyst created by thermal chemical vapor deposition at $900^{\circ}C$. It was found that the diameter of the MWNTs on the Si substrate sample is approximately $5{\sim}10nm$ larger than that of a $SiO_2$/Si substrate sample. Moreover, MWNTs on a Si substrate sample were well-crystallized in terms of their Raman spectrum. In addition, the MWNTs on Si substrate sample show an enhanced redox reaction, as observed through a smaller interface resistance and faster reaction rates in the EIS spectrum. The results show that DSSCs with a MWNT counter electrode on a bare Si substrate sample demonstrate energy conversion efficiency in excess of 1.4 %.

  • A ruthenium (Ru) catalytic layer and a conventional Pt layer were assessed as counter electrodes (CE) for dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Ru films with different thicknesses of 34, 46, and 90 nm were deposited by atomic layer deposition (ALD). Pt layers with the same thicknesses were prepared by sputtering. $0.45cm^2$ DSSCs were prepared and their properties were characterized by FE-SEM, cyclic voltammetry (CV), impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and current-voltage (I-V). FE-SEM revealed that the crystallized Ru films and Pt films had been deposited quite conformally. CV showed that the catalytic activity of Pt was much greater than that of Ru. In addition, although the catalytic activity of Pt did not depend on the thickness, that of Ru showed an increase with increasing thickness. Impedance analysis revealed high charge transfer resistance at the Ru interface and a decrease with increasing Ru thickness, whereas Pt showed low resistance with no thickness dependence. Despite the relatively small catalytic activity of Ru, the I-V result revealed the average energy conversion efficiency of Ru and Pt to be 2.98% and 6.57%, respectively. These results suggest that Ru can be used as counter electrodes in DSSCs due to its extremely low temperature process compatibility.
