  • The Information Diffusion Neural Networks is proposed to regenerate the 3-dimensional terrain elevation data from contour lines. Contours in paper map are an expression of terrain elevation in highly compressed form. A real time regeneration of terrain data for each grid points from the the contour information is required for various applications. In the proposed neural networks, the elevation information on contours is diffused to neighbor units through updating its output toward that of neighbor units. An interpolation of terrain information is achieved from such computation mechanithm. Terrain data regeneration simulation has been done with sampled terrain data on contour lines.

  • In this paper, SIMT structure based GPGPU (General Purpose Computing on Graphics Processing Units) is used for accelerating the Rasterizer which constitutes the screen of the display device in pixel unit. The GPU has a large number of ALUs, and the processing is very fast because of parallel processing. Therefore, in this paper, we implemented a rasterizer that generates a 3D graphics model using a CPU that performs operations sequentially and a GPU that performs operations in parallel. We confirmed that proposed rasterizer in this paper is 1.45 times better than rasterizer using Intel CPU when generating one frame.

  • The Jeju power grid experienced several major power disturbances over the last decade. The postmortem studies of the incidents indicated that some of the generating units did not respond as predicted by system analysis & studies. Consequently, the Korean Power Exchange (KPX) mandated that all units (generators, excitation, governor and turbine systems) in the Korean network greater than or equal to 20MVA be tested to verify the generator reactive power limits as well as the dynamic model data being used for system studies. This paper presents field experiences of the authors in testing and modeling of steam turbines and their associated governors during the generator and model validation.

  • A graded approach applies safety requirements differentially, depending on the risk potential. An advantage of applying a graded approach is that safety assessments can be conducted repeatedly by focusing on areas with relatively higher risk than on those with low risk when decommissioning a nuclear power plant (NPP). The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) recommends applying a graded approach to decommissioning NPPs worldwide. In Korea, the definition of the graded approach requires to be clarified. This study compared the decommissioning method used in Korean NPPs with the IAEA graded approach and examined whether the graded approach can be applied to decommissioning NPPs in Korea. As a result of the comparison, the preliminary decommissioning plan for Shin-Kori Units 5 and 6 showed that the decommissioning method for Korean NPPs is similar to the five-step IAEA graded approach.

  • This paper proposes novel protection schemes for grid-connected distributed generation (DG) units using the fault location algorithm. The grid-connected DG would be influenced by abnormal distribution line conditions. Identification of the fault location for the distribution lines at the relaying point of DG helps solve the problems of the protection relays for DG. The proposed scheme first identifies fault locations using currents and voltages measured at DG and source impedance of distribution networks. Then the actual faulted feeder is identified, applying time-current characteristic curves (TCC) of overcurrent relay (OCR). The method considering the fault location and TCC of OCR might improve the performance of the conventional relays for DG. Test results show that the method prevents the superfluous operations of protection devices by discriminating the faulted feeder, whether it is a distribution line where DG is integrated or out of the line emanated from the substation to which the DGs are connected.

  • Online voltage stability monitoring using real-time measurements is one of the most important tasks in a smart grid system to maintain the grid stability. Loading margin is a good indicator for assessing the voltage stability level. This paper presents an Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) approach for estimation of voltage stability level under credible contingencies using real-time measurements from Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs). PMUs enable a much higher data sampling rate and provide synchronized measurements of real-time phasors of voltages and currents. Depth First (DF) algorithm is used for optimally placing the PMUs. To make the ELM approach applicable for a large scale power system problem, Mutual information (MI)-based feature selection is proposed to achieve the dimensionality reduction. MI-based feature selection reduces the number of network input features which reduces the network training time and improves the generalization capability. Voltage magnitudes and phase angles received from PMUs are fed as inputs to the ELM model. IEEE 30-bus test system is considered for demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed methodology for estimating the voltage stability level under various loading conditions considering single line contingencies. Simulation results validate the suitability of the technique for fast and accurate online voltage stability assessment using PMU data.

  • Discrete cosine transform (DCT) based JPEG standard significantly improves the coding efficiency of image compression, but it is unacceptable event in serious blocking artifacts at low bit rate and low efficiency of high-definition image. In the light of all phase digital filtering theory, this paper proposes a novel transform based on discrete sine transform (DST), which is called all phase discrete sine biorthogonal transform (APDSBT). Applying APDSBT to JPEG scheme, the blocking artifacts are reduced significantly. The reconstructed image of APDSBT-JPEG is better than that of DCT-JPEG in terms of objective quality and subjective effect. For improving the efficiency of JPEG coding, the structure of JPEG is analyzed. We analyze key factors in design and evaluation of JPEG compression on the massive parallel graphics processing units (GPUs) using the compute unified device architecture (CUDA) programming model. Experimental results show that the maximum speedup ratio of parallel algorithm of APDSBT-JPEG can reach more than 100 times with a very low version GPU. Some new parallel strategies are illustrated in this paper for improving the performance of parallel algorithm. With the optimal strategy, the efficiency can be improved over 10%.

  • In this paper, a novel high gain bidirectional modular dc-dc converter (BMC) with unipolar and bipolar structures for dc network interconnections is proposed. When compared with traditional dc grid-connecting converters, the proposed converter can achieve a high voltage gain with a simple modular transformerless structure. A sub-modular structure for the BMC is proposed to eliminate the unbalanced current stress between the different power units (levels) in the BMC. This can realize current sharing and standardized production and assembling. In addition, phase-interval operation is introduced to the sub-modules to realize low voltage and current ripple in both sides of the converter. Furthermore, two types of bipolar topologies of the sub-modular BMC were proposed to extend its application in bipolar dc network connections. In addition, the control system was optimized for grid-connection applications by providing various control strategies. Finally, simulations of a 3-level unipolar sub-modular BMC and a 4-level bipolar sub-modular BMC were conducted, and a 1-kW experimental 3-level unipolar prototype was developed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed converter.

  • This paper proposes a new configuration of bidirectional intelligent semiconductor transformer with rating of 1.9kV/127V, 2kVA. The proposed transformer consists of high-voltage high-frequency AC-DC rectifier, and low-voltage DC-DC and DC-AC converters. The operational feasibility of proposed transformer was verified by computer simulation with PSCAD/EMTDC software. Based on the simulation results, a hardware prototype with rating of 1.9kV/127V, 2kVA was built and tested in the lab to confirm the feasibility of hardware implementation. Using three units of this transformer, a 3-phase transformer with rating of 3.3kV/220V, 6kVA can be built.

  • To guide the decision making of the expert engineer specialized in power system operation and control; the practical OPF solution should take in consideration the critical situation due to severe loading conditions and fault in power system. Differential Evolution (DE) is one of the best Evolutionary Algorithms (EA) to solve real valued optimization problems. This paper presents simple Differential Evolution (DE) Optimization algorithm to solving multi objective optimal power flow (OPF) in the power system with shunt FACTS devices considering voltage deviation, power losses, and power flow branch. The proposed approach is examined and tested on the standard IEEE-30Bus power system test with different objective functions at critical situations. In addition, the non smooth cost function due to the effect of valve point has been considered within the second practical network test (13 generating units). The simulation results are compared with those by the other recent techniques. From the different case studies, it is observed that the results demonstrate the potential of the proposed approach and show clearly its effectiveness to solve practical OPF under contingent operation states.
