To elucidate the action of the cholinergic and ${\alpha}_2$-adrenergic nerve on the isolated ileal smooth muscle of the dog, effect a of electrical field stimulation were investigated on the pretreatment of the physostigmine; cholinestrase inhibitor, yohimbine; ${\alpha}_2$-adrenoceptor blocker, atropine ; cholinergic receptor blocker and phentolamine; non-selective $\alpha$-adrenoceptor blocker from physiograph. 1. The contractile response induced by electrical field stimulation was the frequency (2-40 Hz)-dependent manner. 2. The contractile response induced by electrical field stimulation was markedly increased by the pretreatment of physostigmine$(1{\mu}M)$; cholinestrase inhibitor. 3. The contractile response induced by electrical field stimulation was increased by the pretreatment of yohimbine$(1{\mu}M)$; ${\alpha}_2$-adrenoceptor blocker. These finding suggest that it was powerful excitatory action by cholinergic nerve and inhibitory action by ${\alpha}_2$-adrenergic nerve on ileal smooth muscle of the dog.

For the reliable transmission of meaningful visual information using prosthetic electrical stimulation, it is required to develop an effective stimulation strategy for the generation of electrical pulse trains based on input visual information. The characteristics of neuronal activities of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) evoked by electrical stimulation should be understood for this purpose. In this study, for the development of an optimal stimulation strategy for visual prosthesis, we analyzed the neuronal responses of RGCs in rd1 mouse, photoreceptor-degenerated retina of animal model of retinal diseases (retinitis pigmentosa). Based on the in-vitro model of epiretinal prosthesis which consists of planar multielectrode array (MEA) and retinal patch, we recorded and analyzed multiunit RGC activities evoked by amplitude-modulated electrical pulse trains. Two modes of responses were observed. Short-latency responses occurring at 3 ms after the stimulation were estimated to be from direct stimulation of RGCs. Long-latency responses were also observed mainly at 2 - 100 ms after stimulation and showed rhythmic firing with same frequency as the oscillatory background field potential. The long-latency responses could be modulated by pulse amplitude and duration. From the results, we expect that optimal stimulation conditions such as pulse amplitude and pulse duration can be determined for the successful transmission of visual information by electrical stimulation.

In this study, we prepared sputtering cathode for large sputtering thin film in the facing targets sputtering(FTS) system. Before fabrication of cathode equipment, we investigated optimal magnetic flux in the sputtering cathode by using magnetic field stimulation(Comsol). According to the result of magnetic field stimulation, we manufactured the cathode. After we mounted laboratory-designed cathode on FTS system, the discharge properties were observed in vacuum condition. In addition, ITO films were deposited on glass substrate and their electrical and optical properties were investigated by various measurements (four-point probe, UV-VIS spectrometer, field emission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM), Hall-effect measurement).

Intestine is innervated by an interconnected plexus of both sympathetic and parasympathetic nerve fibers. Sympathetic influence causes inhibition of intestinal motility mediated by both ${\alpha}-\;and\;{\beta}-adrenergic$ receptors. The mechanism of intestinal relaxation by ${\beta}-receptors$ has been extensively studied, but the function of ${\alpha}-receptors$ in intestinal motility is still unclear. Although it is suggested that catecholamine reduces acetylcholine release and this may play an important role in ${\alpha}-receptor$ mediated intestinal relaxation, there is no definite evidences about the mechanism and site of action of ${\alpha}-receptor$ mediated relaxation. In this experiment, therefore, the effect and site of action of ${\alpha}-receptor$ agonists were investigated in the guinea pig ileum using electrical field stimulation. The results are summarized as follows : 1) Electrical field stimulation elicited tonic contraction in isolated guinea pig ileum ana this contraction was completely inhibited by the pretreatment of tetrodotoxin or atropine. 2) Norepinephrine, epinephrine and dopamine inhibited the contraction induced by electrical field stimulation but methoxamine and phenylephrine had little effects. 3) Inhibitory effects of norepinephrine and dopamine was partially blocked by yohimbine and phentolamine pretreatment. But haloperidol and propranolol pretreatment cause no effects on the electrical field stimulation induced contraction. Inhibitory effect of dopamine was completely blocked by both haloperidol and yohimbine pretreatment. 4) Inhibitory effects of norepinephrine and dopamine were little affected by the pretreatment with hexamethonium. It is suggested that electrical field stimulation causes tonic contraction of guinea pig ileum by releasing acetylcholine from postganglionic fiber, and this release is blocked by presynaptic ${\alpha}-receptor$ activation.

In this paper, the electric field distribution induced inside the brain during Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation(TMS) has been thoroughly investigated in terms of tissue heterogeneity and anisotropy as well as different head models. To achieve this, first, an elaborate head model consisting of seven major parts of the head has been built based on the Magnetic Resonance(MR) image data. Then the Finite Element Method(FEM) has been used to evaluate the electric field distribution under different head models or three different conductivity conditions when the head model has been exposed to a time varying magnetic field achieved by utilizing the Figure-Of-Eight(FOE) stimulation coil. The results show that the magnitude as well as the distribution of the induced field is significantly affected by the degree of geometrical asymmetry of head models and conductivity conditions with respect to the center of the FOE coil.

Skeletal muscle function plays a very important role in quality of life. However, skeletal muscle causes functional decline under aging or some diseases. Exercise and muscle training are good solutions to delay sarcopenia, but there are limitations to those who are uncomfortable in exercise. For this reason, alternative interventions for muscle sarcopenia are required, and many studies proved the increase of skeletal muscle mass by electrical stimulation. In conventional studies, however, mouse skeletal muscle cells have been mostly used in experiments to identify electrical stimulation conditions while human derived cells have not been frequently utilized in these studies. Stimulation used for rehabilitation has been uniformly treated without the consideration of aging. In addition, many studies have been used with conventional petri dish usually requiring many numbers of cells, which is not appropriate for rare. Moreover, they are not usually condition uniformity of electrical field. In this study, we have developed an electrical stimulation device which consumes a small amount of cells and can form a uniform electrical field. With the system, we analyzed the skeletal muscle differentiation and Myotube thickness depending on the electrical stimulation condition.

Electrical or chemical stimulation of many areas in the brainstem modulates activity of dorsal horn neurons (DHN). This is known to be mediated by a population of bulbospinal neurons. Yet, little is known about responses of DHNs to stimulation of the caudal ventrolateral medulla (CVLM). Thus, the purpose of the present study is to see if there is any change in activity of DHNs when CVLM is stimulated electrically. Thirty-one DHNs were recorded from dorsal horn of the spinal cord. Fourteen DHNs (45%) were classified as wide dynamic range neurons and 9 (19%) were high threshold cells, and 4 (13%) and 4 (13%) were deep and low threshold neurons, respectively. Among 31 neurons tested for responses to stimulation of CVLM, 21 DHNs (68%) were inhibited by the electrical stimulation of CVLM ($200{\mu}A,\;100{\mu}s$ duration, 100 Hz), and 9 cells (39%) did not show any change in neuronal activity. One neuron was excited by the stimulation. The electrical stimulation of CVLM not only inhibited spontaneous activity of DHNs but also inhibited evoked responses of DHNs to somatic stimulation in the receptive field. These data suggest that CVLM is one of the pain-modulatory areas that control transmission of ascending information of noxious input to the brain from the spinal cord.

The effects of exposure to an extremely low-frequency magnetic field (25 Hz 20G) on animal cells have been studied. In some reports, stimulation was performed for fixed frequency and variations in magnitude; however, animal-cell experiments have established that both parameters play an important role. The present work undertook the modeling, simulation, and development of a uniform-magnetic-field generation system with variable frequency and stimulation intensity (0-60 Hz, 1-25G) for experimentation with cell cultures in situ. The results showed a coefficient of variation less than 1 % of the magnetic-field dispersion at the working volume, which is consistent with the corresponding simulation results demonstrating a uniform magnetic field. On the other hand, long-term tests during the characterization process indicated that increments of only $0.4^{\circ}C$ in the working volume temperature will not be an interfering factor when experiments are carried out in in situ cell cultures.

Presuming that firing neurons have motions inside the MRI magnet due to the interaction between the neuronal magnetic field and the main magnetic field, we applied motion encoding gradients to dissected snail ganglia to observe faster responding MRI signal than the BOLD signal. To activate the snail ganglia in synchronization with the MRI pulse sequence, we used electrical stimulation with the frequency of 30 Hz and the pulse width of 2s. To observe the fast responding signal, we used the volume selected MRI sequence. The magnetic resonance signal intensity, measured with 8 ms long motion encoding gradient with a 20mT/m gradient strength, decreased about $3.46{\pm}1.48%$ when the ganglia were activated by the electrical stimulation.
