  • Background: Elderly patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) have a poor outcome because of co-morbidities, poor tolerance to intensive chemotherapy and inherently more resistant disease. Clofarabine is a second generation nucleoside analogue which has shown promising activity in elderly patients with AML. This study was conducted to review the outcome of treatment with clofarabine in a group of such patients. Methods: The records of 5 elderly patients who were diagnosed to have AML and treated with clofarabine over a 12 month period were reviewed retrospectively. Results: There were 2 female and 3 male patients with a median age of 68 years (range 65-82). At the time of treatment, 2 patients had newly diagnosed AML not considered suitable for intensive therapy, while 3 patients had partial or no response to conventional chemotherapy. The overall response rate was 100%, all patients achieving a complete remission. Induction and consolidation were well tolerated. All patients developed neutropenia with a median duration of 20 days (range 17-42). One patient developed hand and foot syndrome and a generalized rash but recovered. There was no mortality and all patients remained in remission after a median follow-up of 5.2 months (Range 3-10). Conclusion: Clofarabine (alone or in combination) is active in elderly AML patients with an acceptable safety profile and should be considered a potential option in this group.

Although Senior community centers playing an important role in old people leisure life are quantitative resources occupying majority of the Leisure welfare facilities for the elderly. there are many problems of managing programs, aging facilities, small spaces and so on. So, many facilities are used as simple meeting places of old people without solution about qualitative problem. Also, because of negative perceptions of people about Senior community center socially, desires of using Senior community center of old generation will decrease. In order to perfectly play a role of Leisure welfare facilities for the elderly, we need to review regulations about facility and program of Senior community center and suggest ways to resolve these problems. • Aging is rapidly progressing around the world. This study explore and propose a qualitative user research method to specifically understand the needs and desires of the elderly based on a human-centered design philosophy for design targeting the increasing elderly. In particular, the purpose of this study is to propose a user research method that can be easily used when designing products used by the elderly in the actual design site. For this purpose, this study examined the use and implications of using shadowing, interviews, and direct experience while actually proceeding with the walking stick design. The shadowing was organized through the AEIOU frame, and the interview was conducted by adding a significance category to reflect the recent trend of the silver generation. For the direct experience, design implications were derived by setting up four user behavior scenarios, each indoors and outdoors, and experiencing them directly by designers. This study is expected to be an important user research guideline in the current situation where the demand for design for the elderly is diversifying and increasing.

  • This study aims to provide basic information about the policy and system improvements relevant to single elderly men, through an investigation concerning the use and needs of activity spaces near their housing environments. Eighteen single elderly men over 60-years-old living in Gunsan city of Jeonbuk province in Korea participated in in-depth interview, and the data were qualitatively analyzed. The results of the study are as follows: The social networks of the participants were focused on friends or colleagues, while mutual exchanges with their children were intermittently undertaken. Natural networks of the elderly were formed mainly in third places, such as parks, restaurants, or community facilities, and about a half of the elderly participants had no spatial needs, and the rest required spaces for meal services, the elderly living community, jobs, leisure/hobby activities, or facility improvements. The elements influencing use of activity spaces were access from the residence, health, social networks, and economic conditions. The results suggest the following: Exercise or leisure facilities supporting elderly mobility should be set up close to their residential environments. Senior facilities centered on systematic supports and shuttle buses circulating around the places that the elderly visit frequently should be considered. On the other hand, regular maintenance and education on residents' proper use of the facilities, and sufficient information and fee discounts for the general programs are needed so that the elderly could interact with the younger generation. From a public perspective, a rational system and policy based on understanding single elderly men's needs should be prepared for provision and management of the activity space.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the space planning of the Senior Center which was supplied recently in apartment complex, to activate the spaces suitable for the changes and needs of the elderly and to explore the complex functions as a community space where intergenerational exchanges are possible. In other words, we sought implications for the physical plan of the district as a community base space and searched for improvement plan. Methods: The survey was conducted by five large private sectors of construction, and 10 of them were built after 2010 in an urban area(Seoul). Literature review, data analysis, field survey and interview were used for the research method. Results: As a result, it was difficult to meet the demands of various elderly people in the space planning, program and operation mode at the current level. In particular, the Baby Boomer generation as an active silver generation will not use the Senior Center. Therefore, based on the results of the survey, we propose some of the following about the Senior Center in apartment complex. First, it is necessary to change the term "the Senior Center" as defined in Article 55-2 of the "Regulations on Housing Construction Standards, etc.". Second, the criteria for setting up the elderly complex space should be presented specifically. Third, it is necessary to secure financial resources in operation and management. Finally, it is necessary to support the residents' organization for community revitalization. Implication: Through the amendment of the laws, it will be possible for various generations to have opportunities to interact by activating the existing community spaces for seniors. It will also contribute to improving the community of apartment complexes.
