While there had been more rate of the elderly above 60 year-old at hospital and community based home care, on the other hand below 45 year-old at public health center. The most common disease amongst users in all three types was cerebrovascular disease, the second was cancer based at hospitals, hypertension and arthritis at public health centers. There were more needs for those using artificial respiratory equipment, cancer patients, and puerpera. However, the needs for hospital and community based home care were very similar. Conclusions: Due to similar disease characteristics but varied severity at the three home care based settings, they should be managed with flexibility. The purpose of this study was to investigate the determinants of policy demand for elderly care in aged Korea. The data from the first wave of KLoSA (Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing) aged over 45 were used (n=10,165). The major findings were as follows: First, human capital, social capital, and socioeconomic variables influenced on the expected demand for elderly care by government, controlling the expectations of future life and society. Second, the effects of determninants on the expected demand for elderly care by government varied by the level of human capital, social capital, and socioeconomic variables, including ADL and IADL, familial support by children, public transfers, and age. Based on the empirical results, the implications for welfare mix of elderly care were provided.
The determinansts of expenditure spent on medical care and the ratio of medical care spending to consumption expenditure were investigated using the 2002 House Income and Expenditure Survey by the Korea National Statistical Office, which consisted of a sample of 918 elderly households. There were significant differences in expenditure on medical care and the ratio of medical care spending to consumption expenditure between elderly and nonelderly households. Age, education, overspending were significant factors that determine the expenditure on medical care and the ratio of medical care spending to consumption expenditure. Overspending is the most important factor related to expenditure on medical care and the ratio of medical care spending to consumption expenditure.
