Of various design factors affecting icebreaking capability of an icebreaker, the stem angle(i.e., angle between bow stem and ice sheet) is the most important one under continuous icebreaking operation. This study focuses on the relationship between the bow stem angle of an icebreaker and its icebreaking capability. Considering relatively high loading-rate conditions with typical advancing speed of 3 to 4 knots, the material properties and deformation characteristics of sea ice are regarded as entirely elastic and brittle. In this paper the interaction process of icebreaker with level ice is simplified as a beam of finite length supported by Winkler-type elastic foundation simulating water buoyancy. The wedge type ice beam is loaded by the vertical impact forces due to the inclined bow stem of icebreaking vessels. The numerical model provides locations of maximum bending moment where extreme tensile stress arises and also possible fracture occurs. The model can predict a characteristic length of broken ice sheet upon the given environmental and design parameters.

The advanced development in many fields of engineering and science has caused much interests and demands for crashworthiness and non-linear dynamic transient analysis of structure response. Crash and impact problems have a dominant characteristic of large deformation with material plasticity for short time scales. The structural material shows strain rate-dependent behaviors in those cases. Conventional rate-independent constitutive equations used in the general purposed finite analysis programs are inadequate for dynamic finite strain problems. In this paper, a rate-dependent constitutive equation for elastic-plastic material is developed. The plastic stretch rate is modeled based on slip model with dislocation velocity and its density so that there is neither yielding condition, nor loading conditions. Non-linear hardening rule is also introduced for finite strain. Material constants of present constitutive equation are determined by experimental data of mild steel, and the constitutive equation is applied to uniaxile tension loading.
Recently, the construction of infrastructures has been booming and accelerating to keep up with rapid economic growth. Construction activities and operation of transportation facilities cause unfavorable effects such as civil petitions associated with vibration-induced damages or nuisances. Accordingly, the objective of this study is to develop vibration-controlled concrete using various vibration-controlled mixtures, and also to recycle obsolete materials in part. As the first step to achieve this research, preliminary mix designs have been carried out to obtain an appropriate mix proportion above 200kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ in uniaxial compressive strength. Test specimen based on the mix proportion selected have been actuated by the impact hammer to investigate their dynamic characteristics. Vibration-controlled mixtures are foam, latex, rubber powder and plastic resin, which have been determined to reduce a vibration by and large. KS F2437 and travel time method have been used to figure out 1st natural frequency and dynamic elastic moduli. Damping ratios have been computed by adopting the polynomial curvefitting method and the geometric analysis method on the frequency response spectrum curve. of which results have been compared and analyzed hereon.

Recently, a tiny piezoelectric linear motor using a vibration made of the transducer has been invented. The motor consists of a shaft, mobile element, and piezoelectric transducer using a piezoelectric radial mode bimorph disk. The fringe of the bimorph disk is fixed firmly which means this area has no degree of freedom. Therefore, the radial mode of the tranducer transfers to the flexurd mode. The mobile elements move along the shaft by the impact force generated by the flexurd mode of the piezoelectric transducer. The piezoelectric ceramic disks have thickness of 0.1 mm and diameter of 3.5 mm. The elastic disk is introduced between two disks of the ceramic, which has thickness of 0.1 mm and diameter of 3.8 mm. The fringe of the elastic disk is fixed by a brass cylinder which height is 1.2 mm. The Pyrex shaft is used which has diameter of 1 mm and height of 10 mm. The motors are operated at their resonant frequencies. The dynamic properties of the motor have been intensively measured and analyzed according to the applied voltage wave forms at the resonant frequencies. As the sawtooth and rectangular voltage waves are applied, the velocity, the thrust force, and the velocity dependence of the mobile position are measured. The dynamic characteristics are also analyzed within a period of each wave using laser vibrometer. The velocity of the mobile is moderately constant along the shaft. The better dynamic characteristics are obtained in the case of applying the rectangular wave.
Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the functional differences of the two heads of the biceps brachii by measuring the functions in supination according to pronation by the angle of the flexion of the elbow joint, except for the activities of the elbow flexors. Methods: This study was conducted with 25 healthy men in their 20s. At a glenohumeral-joint 0˚ flexion posture, angles of flexion of the elbow joint of 0˚, 30˚, 60˚, 90˚, and 120˚ were randomly provided, and they were asked to perform supination and pronation with an elastic band. Using an eight-channel surface electromyogram, the muscle activities of the long and short heads of the biceps brachii were measured. The activities of the short and long heads according to the angle were analyzed using a one-way ANOVA, and as a post-test, LSD was employed. Results: The analysis of the impact of the resistance of the elastic band in supination on the differences in the muscle activities in the short and long heads suggests there was a significant difference between 0˚ and 30˚ (p < 0.05). Conclusion: In supination according to forearm pronation, the long head had greater action in the early flexion posture of the elbow joint, and it is judged that the ratio of the flexion of the elbow joint according to the actions of the biceps brachii was considered small.
In this work, the bending and dynamic behaviors of advanced composite plates resting on variable visco-Pasternak foundations are studied using a simple shear deformation integral plate model. The research is carried out with a view to a three-parameter foundation including the influences of the variable Winkler coefficient, the constant Pasternak coefficient and the damping coefficient of the elastic medium. The present theory uses a displacement field with integral terms instead of derivative terms by including also the shear deformation effect without introducing the shear correction factors. The equations of motion for advanced composite plates are obtained using the Hamilton principle. Analytical solutions for the bending and dynamic analysis are deduced for simply supported plates resting on variable visco-Pasternak foundations. Some numerical results are presented to demonstrate the impact of material index, elastic foundation type, and damping coefficient of the foundation, on the bending and dynamic responses of advanced composite plates.

The objective of this paper is to assess the potential use of the geogauge and the light falling weight deflectometer (LFWD) and the soil impact hammer as quality control/quality assurance $Q_C/Q_A$ devices for compacted soil layers. A comprehensive field experimental program considering variation of number of compaction, water contents and thickness of compaction layer was conducted on compacted layers of gravel sand. The geogauge, LFWD, the soil impact hammer and static load test (PLT) as a reference test were performed for the compacted layers. The geogauge elastic modulus, $E_G$, the LFWD dynamic modulus, ELFWD, empirical soil stiffness, $K_{30}$, obtained from soil impact hammer and soil stiffness directly obtained from PLT, $K_{30}$, were correlated with increasing number of compaction. The results of this study show that the geogauge, LFWD and the soil impact hammer, which are very simple to test, can be used as substituting devices for static PLT which is a conventional quality control/quality assurance $Q_C/Q_A$ devices for compacted soil layers.
This study utilises repeated numerical tests to understand the effects of variable near-surface conditions on time-lapse seismic surveys. The numerical tests were aimed at reproducing the significant scattering observed in field experiments conducted at the Naylor site in the Otway Basin for the purpose of $CO_2$ sequestration. In particular, the variation of elastic properties of both the top soil and the deeper rugose clay/limestone interface as a function of varying water saturation were investigated. Such tests simulate the measurements conducted in dry and wet seasons and to evaluate the contribution of these seasonal variations to seismic measurements in terms of non-repeatability. Full elastic pre-stack modelling experiments were carried out to quantify these effects and evaluate their individual contributions. The results show that the relatively simple scattering effects of the corrugated near-surface clay/limestone interface can have a profound effect on time-lapse surveys. The experiments also show that the changes in top soil saturation could potentially affect seismic signature even more than the corrugated deeper surface. Overall agreement between numerically predicted and in situ measured normalised root-mean-square (NRMS) differences between repeated (time-lapse) 2D seismic surveys warrant further investigation. Future field studies will include in situ measurements of the elastic properties of the weathered zone through the use of 'micro Vertical Seismic Profiling (VSP)' arrays and very dense refraction surveys. The results of this work may impact on other areas not associated with $CO_2$ sequestration, such as imaging oil production over areas where producing fields suffer from a karstic topography, such as in the Middle East and Australia.
The demand for electricity has a considerable impact on various energy sectors since electricity is generated from various energy sources. This paper attempts to estimate the electricity demand function and obtain some quantitative information on price and income elasticities of the demand. To this end, we apply a lagged dependent variable model to derive long-run as well as short-run elasticities using the time-series data over the period 1991-2014. Our dependent variable is annual electricity demand. The independent variables include constant term, real price of electricity, and real gross domestic product. The results show that the short-run price and income elasticities of the electricity demand are estimated to be -0.142 and 0.866, respectively. They are statistically significant at the 5% level. That is, the electricity demand is in-elastic with respect to price and income changes in the short-run. The long-run price and income elasticities of the electricity demand are calculated to be -0.210 and 1.287, respectively, which are also statistically meaningful at the 5% level. The electricity demand is still in-elastic with regard to price change in the long-run. However, the electricity demand is elastic regarding income change in the long-run. Therefore, this indicates that the effect of demand-side management policy through price-control is restrictive in both the short- and long-run. The growth in electricity demand following income growth is expected to be more remarkable in the long-run than in the short-run.

In this study, core technologies of a traction system on a mountain tram operating on the track of mountain road full of sharp curves and steep gradients were developed. In domestic mountain resort areas, sometimes the transportation service is not provided in winter because of ice and heavy snow on roads, so a mountain railway service independent of the climate and geographic conditions is needed. A traction system was designed taking into account of the power of a traction motor to climb the gradient of 120 ‰, which is common in domestic mountainous areas. and power transmission system was designed to consider the installation space for the traction system. In addition, a reduction gear and a propeller shaft were developed. An elastic pinion was developed and applied to the rack & pinion bogie system for steep gradient so that noise and vibration generated by contact between the steel gears could be reduced. Impact comparison tests showed that the vibration level of the elastic pinion is one-third lower than that of previous steel pinion. Independent rotating wheels and axles were developed for the bogie system to operate on the sharp curve of a 10 meter radius. In addition, the band braking system was developed to enhance the braking force during running on the steep gradient. A test for the braking force showed it exerts the required braking force. The performance of the developed core components were verified by the tests and finally they were applied to the bogie system running on the track of steep gradient and sharp curve.
