  • The current article studied wave propagation in a nonlocal porous thermoelastic half-space with temperature-dependent properties. The problem is solved in the context of the Green-Lindsay theory (G-L) and the Lord- Shulman theory (L-S) based on thermoelasticity with memory-dependent derivatives. The governing equations of the porous thermoelastic solid are solved using normal mode analysis with an eigenvalue approach. In order to illustrate the analytical developments, the numerical solution is carried out, and the effect of local parameter and temperature-dependent properties on the physical fields are presented graphically.

  • This paper introduces an eigenvalue method of transforming the hyperbolic partial differential equations of a particular unsteady friction water hammer model into characteristic form. This method is based on the solution of the corresponding one-dimensional Riemann problem that transforms hyperbolic quasi-linear equations into ordinary differential equations along the characteristic directions, which in this case arises as the eigenvalues of the system. A mathematical justification and generalization of the eigenvalues method is provided and this approach is compared to the traditional characteristic method.

  • Since the multiscale wavelet-based numerical methods allow effective adaptive analysis, they have become new analysis tools. However, the main applications of these methods have been mainly on elliptic problems, they are rarely used for eigenvalue analysis. The objective of this paper is to develop a new multiscale wavelet-based adaptive Galerkin method for eigenvalue analysis. To this end, we employ the hat interpolation wavelets as the basis functions of the finite-dimensional trial function space and formulate a multiresolution analysis approach using the multiscale wavelet-Galerkin method. It is then shown that this multiresolution formulation makes iterative eigensolvers very efficient. The intrinsic difference-checking nature of wavelets is shown to play a critical role in the adaptive analysis. The effectiveness of the present approach will be examined in terms of the total numbers of required nodes and CPU times.

  • Blind adaptive channel identification of communication channels is a problem of important current theoretical and practical concerns. Recently proposed solutions for this problem exploit the diversity induced by antenna array or time oversampling leading to the so-called, second order statistics techniques. And adaptive blind channel identification techniques based on a off-line least-squares approach have been proposed. In this paper, a new approach is proposed that is based on eigenvalue decomposition. And the eigenvector corresponding to the minimum eigenvalue of the covariance matrix of the received signals contains the channel impulse response. And we present a adaptive algorithm to solve this problem. The performance of the proposed technique is evaluated over real measured channel and is compared to existing algorithms.

  • This paper discusses design sensitivity analysis and its application to a structural dynamics modification. Eigenvalue derivatives are determined with respect to the element parameters, which include intrinsic property parameters such as Young's modulus, density of the material, diameter of a beam element, thickness of a plate element, and shape parameters. Derivatives of stiffness and mass matrices are directly calculated by derivatives of element matrices. The first and the second order derivatives of the eigenvalues are then mathematically derived from a dynamic equation of motion of FEM model. The calculation of the second order eigenvalue derivative requires the sensitivity of its corresponding eigenvector, which are developed by Nelson's direct approach. The modified eigenvalue of the structure is then evaluated by the Taylor series expansion with the first and the second derivatives of eigenvalue. Numerical examples for simple beam and plate are presented. First, eigenvalues of the structural system are numerically calculated. Second, the sensitivities of eigenvalues are then evaluated with respect to the element intrinsic parameters. The most effective parameter is determined by comparing sensitivities. Finally, we predict the modified eigenvalue by Taylor series expansion with the derivatives of eigenvalue for single parameter or multi parameters. The examples illustrate the effectiveness of the eigenvalue sensitivity analysis for the optimization of the structures.

  • While the external axial compressive load is applied to only the shell edge of stringer-stiffened shell in the most of numerical and analytical previous studies (entitled as conventional approach), a part of external load is applied to the stringers in real conditions. It leads to decrease the accuracy of the axial buckling load calculated by the conventional eigenvalue analysis approach performed in the most of previous studies. In this study, the distribution of stress in the pre-buckling analysis was enhanced by applying the axial external compressive load to both shell and stringers to perform an accurate eigenvalue analysis of the stringer-stiffened composite shell. In this regard, a model was developed in FORTRAN environment to simulate the laminated stringer-stiffened shell under axial compressive load using finite strip method. The axial buckling load of the shell was obtained through eigenvalue analysis. A comparison was made between the results obtained from the model and those available in the previous studies to evaluate the validity of the results obtained from the model. Through a parametric study, the effects of different parameters such as stringer properties and composite layup on the buckling load of the shell under different loading patterns were investigated. The results indicated that in some cases, the axial buckling load obtained for the conventional approach used in the most of previous studies is significantly overestimated or underestimated due to neglecting the stringer in distribution of external load applied to the stringer-stiffened shell. According to the results obtained from the parametric study, some graphs were derived to show the accuracy of the axial buckling load obtained from the conventional approach utilized in the literature.

  • The paper deals with the propagation of Rayleigh waves in a nonlocal thermoelastic isotropic layer which is lying over a nonlocal thermoelastic isotropic half-space under the purview of Green-Lindsay model and Eringen's nonlocal elasticity in the presence of voids. The normal mode analysis is employed to the considered equations to obtain vector matrix differential equation which is then solved by eigenvalue approach. The frequency equation of Rayleigh waves is derived and different particular cases are also deduced. The effects of voids and nonlocality on different characteristics of Rayleigh waves are presented graphically.

  • This paper presents a novel approach based on eigenvalue perturbation of augmented matrix(AMEP) to estimate the eigenvalue for variation of controller parameter. AMEP is a useful tool in the analysis and design of large scale power systems containing many different types of exciters, governors and stabilizers. Also, it can be used to find possible sources of instability and to determine the most sensitivity parameters for low frequency oscillation modes. This paper describes the application results of AMEP algorithm with respect to all controller parameter of KEPCO systems. Simulation results for interarea and local mode show that the proposed AMEP algorithm can be used for turning controller parameter, and verifying system data and linear model.

  • We present different numerical methods for solving the shallow shelf equations with basal drag (SSAB). An alternative approach of splitting the SSAB equation into a Laplacian and diagonal shift operator is discussed with respect to the underlying eigenvalue problem. First, we solve the equations using standard methods. Then, the coupled equations are decomposed into operators for membranes stresses, basal shear stress and driving stress. Applying reasonable parameter values, we demonstrate that the operator of the membrane stresses is much stiffer than the operator of the basal shear stress. Here, we could apply a new splitting method, which alternates between the iteration on the membrane-stress operator and the basal-shear operator, with a more frequent iteration on the operator of the membrane stresses. We show that this splitting accelerates and stabilize the computational performance of the numerical method, although an appropriate choice of the standard method used to solve for all operators in one step speeds up the scheme as well.

  • The objective of the present research is to develop a wavelet-based multiscale adaptive Galerkin method for membrane eigenvalue analysis. Since approximate eigensolutions at a certain resolution level can be good guesses, which play an important role in typical iterative solvers, at the next resolution level, the multiresolution iterative solution approach by wavelets can improve the solutionconvergence rate substantially. The intrinsic difference checking nature of wavelets can be also utilized effectively to develop an adaptive strategy. The present wavelet-based approach will be implemented for the simplest vector iteration method, but some important aspects, such as convergence speedup, and the reduction in the number of nodes can be clearly demonstrated.
