  • Changes in activities of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and acetaldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) in vitro were examined by measuring maximum absorbances of ADH and ALDH at 340 nm to determine influence of Maesil (Prunus mume) on alcohol metabolism. Facilitating rates of ADH activity were 137.92, 131.58, 152,96, 218.70, 111.76, and 144.27% in Maesil juice, 5, 10, and 15% GMT, and 0.5 and 1.0% aspartic acid, respectively, ALDH activity increased in the order of Maesil juice > ALDH > GMT > aspartic acid, and facilitating rate of ALDH activity in Maesil juice was the highest at 976.44%. These results indicate alcohol metabolizing activity can be enhanced by Maesil juice.

  • Purpose : This study aimed to investigate whether exogenous thyroxine($T_4$) treatment to alcohol-fed dams would ameliorate the detrimental effects of alcohol on the postnatal development of neuropeptide-Y(NPY)-containing neurons of the cerebral cortex and hippocampus of the offspring. Methods : Time-pregnant rats were divided into three groups. An alcohol-fed group A received 35 calories of liquid alcohol diet daily from gestation day 6; control group B was fed a liquid diet in which dextrin replaced alcohol isocalorically; and alcohol+$T_4$ group C received 35 calories of liquid alcohol diet and exogenous thyroxine subcutaneously. The features of the growth and maturation of rat brain tissue were observed at 0, 7, 14, 21 and 28 postnatal days via immunohistochemistry. Results : Group C showed prominent NPY immunoreactivity in the cerebral cortex compared to group A and B at P7. In group C, NPY-containing neurons were widely distributed in the all layers of cerebral cortex after P14. Also, numerical decreases of NPY-containing neuron were not found according to increasing age in group C. A decrease of NPY-containing neurons, however, was clearly observed in group A compared to group C at P28. In the hippocampus, similar patterns appeared in groups B and C after P7. Especially, in groups B and C, NPY-containing fibers formed plexus in the cerebral cortex and hippocampus at P14. Conclusion : These results suggest that the increase of NPY synthesis caused by maternal administration of exogenous thyroxine may convalesce fetal alcohol effects, one of the effects of the dysthyroid state following maternal alcohol abuse.

  • Using the Sedimentation method it's possible to get $TiO_2$ particle from which by this research, $TiO_2$ particle was produced. The parameter in the kind of the temperature and the alcohol solvent used $TiO_2$ particle production investigated crystal structure of $TiO_2$ particle and the influence exerted on the size of the particle and the form. After scanning electron microscope (SEM) analyzed methyl alcohol, iso-propylalcohol and tert-butylalcohol used by a solvent at the $TiO_2$ particle production, iso-propylalcohol was most effective. And after an thermogravimetric analyzer method was used, the anatase structure was maintained $500^{\circ}C$ by $200^{\circ}C$, but it was converted by the rutile structure by $800^{\circ}C$.

  • The ion exchange membranes prepared from the reaction between poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) which is known as the good methanol barrier in pervaporation membrane processes and sulfo-succinic acid (SSA) was used as the basic membranes. In order to improve the ion exchange capacity, poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) was added to this ion exchange membranes. The methanol permeabilities, ion conductivities, water contents and ion exchange capacity were measured for the resulting membranes with varying PAA contents. In general, methanol permeability and ion conductivity of PVA/SSA/PAA membranes were less than those of PVA/SSA membranes due to the reduction of free volumes resulted from crosslinking. The vehicle mechanism could be more dominant than jump mechanism for membranes in question.

  • Hwang Chil (Dendropanax morbifera Lev.) belongs to Aralia elata group. This plant is only found in Korea and is considered to be along with ginseng. The physiological activities of it have been reported as having scavenging effect on oxygen free radicals and anti-carcinogenic effect. As most of the anti-oxidants were effective on protecting hepatotoxicity from alcohol, hard tissues restoring and skin whitening, the effectiveness of Hwang Chil extracts was screened. (omitted)

  • Alcohol extracts of plants widely used in the traditional medicine have been tested to establish if they affect the metabolism of drug in mice. Forteen of the plants tested exhibited prolonging and/or inhibitory effect on hexobarbital sleeping time. Some of them also showed increasing effect on strychnine mortality, whereas piperis retrofracti Fructus reduced the toxicity of strychnine.

  • The effect of various polymers on the freeze-thaw resistance of hardened cement mortar was investigated. For this study, styrene butadiene rubber (SBR), ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were used to prepare cement mortar specimen, and then freeze-thaw experiment was carried out. By adding SBR adn EVA to the specimen, the freeze-thaw resistance of specimens was improved, but when PVA was added to the specimen, its freeze-thaw resistance was lowered. Particularly, the specimens which were added 5, 10% of SBR and 5% of EVA showed excellent freeze-thaw resistance in the salt environment.

  • In this study, the bioactive activities (antioxidant activity, whitening activity, and anti-wrinkle effect) of dried tapioca-unhulled barley grain residue (TUDDG) obtained after alcohol fermentation, were measured. In the case of DPPH radical scavenging activity, the 50% ethanol extract of TUDDG showed the highest level of about 83% at the concentration of 100 mg/ml, and the ABTS radical scavenging activity was also about 98% of the 50% ethanol extract of TUDDG even at the concentration of 10 mg/mL. In the case of mushroom tyrosinase inhibitory activity, the 50% ethanol extract of TUDDG showed the highest activity at 100 mg/ml concentration of 37%. As a result of collagenage activity inhibition and elastase analysis, the 50% ethanol extract of TUDDG showed high activity with 4.2 mg/mL (IC50) and 26.1 mg/mL (IC50), respectively. Therefore, considering the physiological activity as well as the extraction efficiency of physiologically active substances, the 50% ethanol extract of TUDDG is judged to be highly effective.

  • In this study, the effect of 70% ethyl alcohol fraction of Cervus nippon(CN-E) on mouse T-lymphocyte was investigated in vivo. The administration of CN-E(100 mg/kg) enhanced the proliferation of thymocytes, the population of $CD4^+CD8^-$ single-positive cells and the production of $interferon-{\gamma}$ in thymocytes and splenocytes. The administration of CN-E did not induce DNA fragmentation and reduce mitochondrial transmembrane potential in thymocytes. These results indicate that the CN-E contams a stimulative component on the proliferation of thymocytes, the population of $T_H$ cells and the production of $interferon-{\gamma}$ in T-lymphocytes.
