Background: Phenol and alcohol have been used to ablate nerves to treat pain but are not specific for nerves and can damage surrounding soft tissue. Lidocaine at concentrations > 8% injected intrathecal in the animal model has been shown to be neurotoxic. Tests the hypothesis that 10% lidocaine is neurolytic after a peri-neural blockade in an ex vivo experiment on the canine sciatic nerve. Methods: Under ultrasound, one canine sciatic nerve was injected peri-neurally with 10 cc saline and another with 10 cc of 10% lidocaine. After 20 minutes, the sciatic nerve was dissected with gross inspection. A 3 cm segment was excised and preserved in 10% buffered formalin fixative solution. Both samples underwent progressive dehydration and infusion of paraffin after which they were placed on paraffin blocks. The sections were cut at $4{\mu}m$ and stained with hemoxylin and eosin. Microscopic review was performed by a pathologist from Henry Ford Hospital who was blinded to which experimental group each sample was in. Results: The lidocaine injected nerve demonstrated loss of gross architecture on visual inspection while the saline injected nerve did not. No gross changes were seen in the surrounding soft tissue seen in either group. The lidocaine injected sample showed basophilic degeneration with marked cytoplasmic vacuolation in the nerve fibers with separation of individual fibers and endoneurial edema. The saline injected sample showed normal neural tissue. Conclusions: Ten percent lidocaine causes rapid neurolytic changes with ultrasound guided peri-neural injection. The study was limited by only a single nerve being tested with acute exposure.
Ethanolic leaf extract of Bauhinia variegata has been tested for its possible antioxidant potentials against sodium arsenite induced toxicity in mice. Mice were randomized into two groups of five and fifty mice. Group I consisting of 5 mice without any treatment with food and water ad libitum which served as normal control. Group II mice were fed with sodium arsenite in drinking water at 100 ppm concentration for two monthsthen they were segregated into five groups which were treated differently. Group II a mice received only arsenic as sodium arsenite with drinking water, Group II b were fed chronically 1 : 20 alcohol to distilled water (vehicle), Group II c, d, e mice were orally fed 50 mg/kg, 150 mg/kg and 250 mg/kg of B. variegata leaf extract of once daily for 15 and 30 days respectively along with arsenic. Several toxicity marker enzymes such as gamma glutamyl transferase, lactate dehydrogenase, aspartate and alanine aminotransferase, acid and alkaline phosphatase, catalase and superoxide dismutase along with haematological variables such as glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase, creatinine, bilirubin, haemoglobin and sugar in different groups of treated and control mice were studied. Results obtained from the in vivo experiment revealed that administration of sodium arsenite caused a significant increase in some enzymes while decrease in some. A similar trend was also observed with haematological variables. In contrast B. variegata treatment at 150 mg/kg favourably modulated these alterations and maintained the antioxidant status than other two doses i.e. 50 mg/kg and 250 mg/kg thereby making it a good candidate to be used as supportive palliating measures in arsenic induced toxicity.
The antifungal activity of chemical substances from Artemisia annua were examined. Antifungal activity of aqueous extracts from A. annua was higher than that of essential oils in Fusarium oxysporum, whereas that of essential oil was higher than that of aqueous extracts in Aspergillus nidulans. The GC/MS methods were employed for the analysis and identification of phytotoxic substances from A. annua. Essential oil of some components were identified including thujone, terpineol, β-pinene, cienole, 2,4-hexndienal, camphor, citronellal, (-)-menthone, (1R)-(-)myrtenol, (S)-(-)-perilla aldehyde, perilla alcohol, 4-tert-buthylaniline, eugenol, isosafrole, isoeugenol and α-humulene. These results suggest that the chemical substances from A. annua such as terphenoids seem to be responsible for the allelopathic effect.
In order to study the effect of aqua-acupuncture with Cervi Cornu (C.C.) extract solution manufactured by water-alcohol method on the lipid metabolism and osteoporosis, C.C. aqua-acupuncture was carried out every two days for 60 days on the corresponding bilateral loci of Shinsu (BL23), Taejo (BL11), and Hyonjong (GB39) from the 10th day after the ovariectomy for induced osteoporosis and thereafter the level of serum triglyceride, LDL, Ca, phosphorus and osteocalcin, as well as urine hydroxyproline were measured in the ovariectomized rats. The rats being studied were divided into a normal group (sham operation group), a control group (ovariectomized group), and a C.C. aqua-acupuncture group (group with C.C. aqua-acupunctured to the points of Shinsu, Taejo, and Hyonjong every two days for 60 days from the 10th day after the ovariectomy). The following results were obtained: 1. The serum triglyceride indicated an inhibited increase with statistical significance in the C.C. aqua-acupuncture group compared with the control group. 2. The serum LDL indicated an inhibited increase without any statistical significance in the C.C. aqua-acupuncture group compared with the control group. 3. The serum Ca showed an inhibited decrease without any statistical significance in the C.C. aqua-acupuncture group compared with the control group. 4. The serum phosphorus showed an inhibited decrease with statistical significance in the C.C. aqua-acupuncture group compared with the control group. 5. The serum osteocalcin indicated an inhibited decrease without any statistical significance in the C.C. aqua-acupuncture group compared with the control group. 6. The urine hydroxyproline showed an inhibited increase with statistical significance in the C.C. aqua-acupuncture group compared with the control group.
Background: A very high incidence of lung cancer is observed in Mizoram and Manipur, North East India. We conducted a population based case control study to establish associations of p53 codon 72 polymorphisms and interactions with environmental factors for this high incidence. Material and Methods: A total of 272 lung cancer cases and 544 controls matched for age (${\pm}5years$), sex and ethnicity were collected and p53 codon 72 polymorphism genotypes were analyzed using a polymerase chain based restriction fragment length polymorphism assay. We used conditional multiple logistic regression analysis to calculate adjusted odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals after adjusting for confounding factors. Results: p53 Pro/Pro genotype was significantly associated with increased risk of lung cancer in the study population (adjusted OR=2.14, CI=1.35-3.38, p=0.001). Interactions of the p53 Pro/Pro genotype with exposure to wood smoke (adjusted OR=3.60, CI=1.85-6.98, p<0.001) and cooking oil fumes (adjusted OR=3.27, CI=1.55-6.87, p=0.002), betel quid chewing (adjusted OR=3.85, CI=1.96-7.55, p<0.001), tobacco smoking (adjusted OR=4.42, CI=2.27-8.63, p<0.001) and alcohol consumption (adjusted OR=3.31, CI=1.10-10.03, p=0.034) were significant regarding the increased risk of lung cancer in the study population. Conclusions: The present study provided preliminary evidence that a p53 codon 72 polymorphism may effect lung cancer risk in the study population, interacting synergistically with environmental factors.
Experiments using ozone are presented for the water purification and wine quality improvement. Advanced oxidation process results reveal water treatment by both ozone and UV radiation increases quality of the takju prepared using a Korean conventional nuruk than with ozone-treatment or convectional method only. Water quality was enhanced by ozone treatment, resulting in 85% reduction of hardness, and 30% increase in total glucose produced due to increased conductivity and biodegradability of water. Although initially decreased slightly due to oxidation of takju, higher than expected ethanol production was observed, with ozone plus UV treatment resulting in 20% higher production compared with other methods.
This study obtained significant results by analyzing 202 dental hygienists in Daegu and Gyeongbuk region with analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA analysis using the SPSS WIN 18.0 in order to investigate the fusion relationship between anger expression, stress elasticity, job satisfaction, and quality of life of dental hygienists. Anger expressions averaged 1.50, and was high hospital-level, job-motivated, non-self-esteemed, high income, alcohol consumption. Stress resilience was averaged 3.09, and was high when abstinence. Job satisfaction average 3.24, and was high when was pride, abstinence. Quality of life, stress resilience and job satisfaction were positively correlated. Stress resilience and job satisfaction are positively correlated. Overall, information provision and environmental support should be provided to increase job satisfaction and stress resilience in order to improve the quality of life of dental hygienists and reduce the expression of anger.
This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the general characteristics of adolescents and their mental health in relation to experiences of heavy drinking. The research utilized raw data from the 18th Youth Health Behavior Online Survey (2022), focusing on 530 participants who reported experiencing heavy drinking in the past 30 days. The study applied weighted composite sample analysis, incorporating frequency, chi-square test, and logistic regression to examine the data. According to the research findings, experiences of heavy drinking showed statistically significant differences across variables such as gender, academic achievement, economic status, sexual experience, and smoking. Additionally, among the mental health characteristics, stress perception, depression, loneliness, suicidal thoughts, suicide planning, and suicide attempts were identified as influencing factors on heavy drinking experiences. These results underscore the need for prevention programs addressing alcohol consumption habits, considering the mental and physical health of adolescents. Developing programs that take into account the relationship between mental health and drinking habits can contribute to forming healthy lifestyle habits during adolescence.
Background: Adherence to antiretroviral treatment (ART) is crucial for maintaining the HIV-RNA suppression in patients living with HIV/AIDS. This study aims to analyze the risk factors contributing to low medication adherence among individuals with HIV/AIDS by analyzing data from the Korean HIV/AIDS cohort study. Methods: The dependent variable is ART medication adherence. The depressive symptom and anxiety scores were collected as main independence variables. Covariates included gender, age, transmission route, alcohol and smoking information, and antiviral treatment regimen details. To predict the relationship between ordinal dependent variables and independent variables, an ordered logistic regression analysis was conducted, and odds ratios (OR) were calculated. Results: The results of the ordered logistic regression analysis showed that female was associated with a higher risk of low medication adherence (OR=2.91, 95% CI=1.08, 7.83). Among the subjects who were non-smokers and non-drinkers, the risk of low medication adherence was lower (OR=0.36, 95% CI=0.18, 0.70). Depending on the ART treatment group, individuals taking integrase inhibitor had a lower risk of medication adherence (OR=0.31, 95% CI=0.13, 0.76), and those experiencing depressive symptoms were related with a higher risk of low medication adherence (OR=1.97, 95% CI=1.12, 3.46). Conclusions: The encouragement and emotional support of healthcare professionals are essential for patients living with HIV/AIDS who experience depressive symptoms to maintain ART adherence. Additionally, further research is needed to ensure that HIV/AIDS infected female with concurrent depressive symptoms can achieve appropriate ART therapeutic effect.
Bradyrhizobium japonicum is a soil bacterium with a unique ability to infect the roots of leguminous plants and establish a nitrogen-fixing symbiosis, which has been used as a microbial manure. In this study, we examined the stress response after pretreatment of cells with cold temperature. When pre-treated with cold temperature ($4^{\circ}C$) for 16 hr, B. japonicum increased the viability in subsequent stress-conditions such as alcohol, $H_2O_2$, heat, and dehydration. For cold adpatation, cultured B. japonicum was exposed to $4^{\circ}C$. Upon subsequent exposure to various conditions, the number of adapted cells pretreated by cold adaptation was 10-1000 fold higher than that of non-adaptated ones. It appeared de novo protein synthesis occurred during adaptation, because a protein synthesis inhibitor, chloramphenicol abolished the increased stress tolerance. By using a degenerate PCR primer set, a csp homolog was amplified from B. japonicum genome and sequenced. The deduced partial amino acid sequence of the putative Csp (Cold shock protein) shares a significant similarity with known Csp proteins of other bacteria.
