Development of Elementary Maker Education Program using WeDo Robot (WeDo 로봇 활용 초등 메이커 교육 프로그램 개발)

  • This study conducted research on creating an environment for maker education programs for robot and SW education, development and application of maker education programs for low-grade elementary school students in farming and fishing villages. Based on the preceding maker education model, the OMCSI model was developed for the lower grade level of elementary school, and based on this, five WeDo-utilized elementary maker education programs were developed. From April 1, 2020 to October 30, 2020, the results of applying the elementary school maker education program using WeDo Robot 2.0 to 10 second graders of 10 Elementary School in Gyeongsangnam-do are as follows. The average increased by 3.40 points (t=-2.378, p=0.034) and the average increased by 3.30 points (t=-2.329, p=0.040). The average was also increased by 3.40 points (t=-2.458, p=0.038). Finally, it rose to 3.70 points (t=-2.449, p=0.037) for its reasoning ability. That is, all four sub-elements of computing thinking had a significant probability of 0.04, indicating statistical significant differences between scores of pre-post computing thinking. Therefore, the Elementary Maker Education Program using WeDo robots has worked very effectively to improve students' computing thinking skills.

Experience Way of Artificial Intelligence PLAY Educational Model for Elementary School Students

  • Given the recent pace of development and expansion of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, the influence and ripple effects of AI technology on the whole of our lives will be very large and spread rapidly. The National Artificial Intelligence R&D Strategy, published in 2019, emphasizes the importance of artificial intelligence education for K-12 students. It also mentions STEM education, AI convergence curriculum, and budget for supporting the development of teaching materials and tools. However, it is necessary to create a new type of curriculum at a time when artificial intelligence curriculum has never existed before. With many attempts and discussions going very fast in all countries on almost the same starting line. Also, there is no suitable professor for K-12 students, and it is difficult to make K-12 students understand the concept of AI. In particular, it is difficult to teach elementary school students through professional programming in AI education. It is also difficult to learn tools that can teach AI concepts. In this paper, we propose an educational model for elementary school students to improve their understanding of AI through play or experience. This an experiential education model that combineds exploratory learning and discovery learning using multi-intelligence and the PLAY teaching-learning model to undertand the importance of data training or data required for AI education. This educational model is designed to learn how a computer that knows only binary numbers through UA recognizes images. Through code.org, students were trained to learn AI robots and configured to understand data bias like play. In addition, by learning images directly on a computer through TeachableMachine, a tool capable of supervised learning, to understand the concept of dataset, learning process, and accuracy, and proposed the process of AI inference.

Analysis of Information Education Related Theses Using R Program (R을 활용한 정보교육관련 논문 분석)

  • Lately, academic interests in big data analysis and social network has been prominently raised. Various academic fields are involved in this social network based research trend, which is, social network has been actively used as the research topic in social science field as well as in natural science field. Accordingly, this paper focuses on the text analysis and the following social network analysis with the Master's and Doctor's dissertations. The result indicates that certain words had a high frequency throughout the entire period and some words had fluctuating frequencies in different period. In detail, the words with a high frequency had a higher betweenness centrality and each period seems to have a distinctive research flow. Therefore, it was found that the subjects of the Master's and Doctor's dissertations were changed sensitively to the development of IT technology and changes in information curriculum of elementary, middle and high school. It is predicted that researches related to smart, mobile, smartphone, SNS, application, storytelling, multicultural, and STEAM, which had an increased frequency in period 4, would be continuously conducted. Moreover, the topics of robots, programming, coding, algorithms, creativity, interaction, and privacy will also be studied steadily.

Design and Application of Math Class with Robot (로봇 활용 수학수업의 설계 및 적용)

  • As a tool of programming education, a robot is effective in creative problem solving abilities and logical thinking skills. It also provides practical, operational learning experience to learners, when using as a tool of learning, it can help learners' specific understanding for the contents of education and lead to an active participation in learning. This research focuses on the robot's instrumental use in the mathematics class. So the lesson activities with relation to the fourth grade math curriculum were developed after the functional analysis of the robot and the extraction of educational utilization with function. The result shows that there wasn't a significant difference in achievement test but there was a positive response in the most of the survey items. It shows that robots lead to an active participation in class, to be interested in math class and were helpful to understand math concepts. There was also a positive response in the result of learner interviews such as dynamic, collaborative communication, experiential, practical lessons that are rare sights in normal math class.

  • Research on intelligent robot is in active progress as the next generation IT education area. Since intelligent robots are closely related to the real human world, they should provide human behaviors or judging ability as their functions. For this reason, research is recently done not only on diverse hardware of robot education but also on service component architecture which includes various functions. In this paper we propose a study on learning to creative solve problems using RDS(Robotics Developer Studio). RDS is a software tool to control or program intelligence robot as a software module. Using service component framework which considers standardization of the integrated development of intelligent robot, we expect to provide 3-dimensional visual simulation environment, and save time and costs in education the environment for the intelligence robot experiment.

A Research for Interface Based on EMG Pattern Combinations of Commercial Gesture Controller (상용 제스처 컨트롤러의 근전도 패턴 조합에 따른 인터페이스 연구)

  • These days, ICT-related products are pouring out due to development of mobile technology and increase of smart phones. Among the ICT-related products, wearable devices are being spotlighted with the advent of hyper-connected society. In this paper, a body-attached type wearable device using EMG(electromyography) sensors is studied. The research field of EMG sensors is divided into two parts. One is medical area and another is control device area. This study corresponds to the latter that is a method of transmitting user's manipulation intention to robots, games or computers through the measurement of EMG. We used commercial device MYO developed by Thalmic Labs in Canada and matched up EMG of arm muscles with gesture controller. In the experiment part, first of all, various arm motions for controlling devices are defined. Finally, we drew several distinguishing kinds of motions through analysis of the EMG signals and substituted a joystick with the motions.

Comparison of the Effects of Robotics Education to Programming Education Using Meta-Analysis (메타 분석을 이용한 로봇교육과 프로그래밍교육의 효과 비교)

  • The positive impacts of robotics education and programming education on learners are similar. However, robotics education differs from programming education because it includes purchasing and building robots that cause financial and cognitive load of learners. Due to these differences, two kinds of education may not possess equal efficacies for all schools or all learning objectives. To verify this hypothesis, we conducted meta-analysis of studies on robotics education published in South Korea to estimate the effect sizes and compare it to that of programming education. The difference between the average effect sizes of robotics education and of programming education was significant, as the former was 0.4060 and the latter 0.6664. The average effect size of programming education was significantly larger than that of robotics education for primary school students. Middle school students achieved the highest results in both robotics education and programming education. Also, robotics education became more effective than programming education as students were older. Analysis on objectives showed that programming education uniformly affected all areas, whereas robotics education had more impact on affective domain than cognitive domain. Robot construction had the largest effect size, followed by robot construction and programming, robot programming, and robot utilization. Programming education has larger positive impacts on students overall compared to robotics education. Robotics education is more effective to upperclassmen than programming education, and improves affective domain of students. Also, robotics education shows higher efficacy when combined with various subjects.

Localization using Ego Motion based on Fisheye Warping Image (어안 워핑 이미지 기반의 Ego motion을 이용한 위치 인식 알고리즘)

  • This paper proposes a novel localization algorithm based on ego-motion which used Lucas-Kanade Optical Flow and warping image obtained through fish-eye lenses mounted on the robots. The omnidirectional image sensor is a desirable sensor for real-time view-based recognition of a robot because the all information around the robot can be obtained simultaneously. The preprocessing (distortion correction, image merge, etc.) of the omnidirectional image which obtained by camera using reflect in mirror or by connection of multiple camera images is essential because it is difficult to obtain information from the original image. The core of the proposed algorithm may be summarized as follows: First, we capture instantaneous $360^{\circ}$ panoramic images around a robot through fish-eye lenses which are mounted in the bottom direction. Second, we extract motion vectors using Lucas-Kanade Optical Flow in preprocessed image. Third, we estimate the robot position and angle using ego-motion method which used direction of vector and vanishing point obtained by RANSAC. We confirmed the reliability of localization algorithm using ego-motion based on fisheye warping image through comparison between results (position and angle) of the experiment obtained using the proposed algorithm and results of the experiment measured from Global Vision Localization System.

Study on Image Processing Algorithm Education Based on Web Camera and LEGO Mindstorms (웹 카메라와 LEGO Mindstorms를 활용한 영상 처리 알고리즘의 교육에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, we describe a case study of a new lab. project that improves efficiency for education and interest on learning in image processing and pattern recognition related subjects by using LEGO Mindstorms. In addition we verify the validity with analysis of the practical application. LEGO Mindstorms is already used in many educational institution of several countries since about 10 years ago and various case studies have been published. The use of LEGO Mindstorms is generally positive but the negative comments about this exist. The main cause of negative opinion is from unpredictability. The unpredictability from mainly analog characteristics of robot can degrade the effective learning. The describing lab. project suppresses occurrence of unpredictability by minimizing dependence on robots. Students can concentrate on learning the related algorithms by minimizing the learning content and further consideration.

Landscape Design for Masan Robot Land (마산로봇랜드 조경설계)

  • A theme park is not just a recreational space for leisure activities, but also a place of storytelling as collected around abstract boundaries called themes. These stories are 'a space that tells the meaning' that the visitor is looking for and the Robot Land space offers robots, humans, and nature. This study is a description of the design strategy and content of the work which was elected as a subject of the subsequent rank negotiation of the Masan Robot Land design contest for the selection of a private contractor. The focus of the plan is, first, the organizational power of each space and the delivery power of a theme for the history of revisits, which might be considered depending on whether or not the theme park has been successful in the visitor's mind. Second, it is to actively use the potential of Masan, which is not only the key hub of the mechanical industry but also has beautiful coastal resources. First, they created a space that can flexibly react depending on the user's desire and the change of form, minimizing environmental damage by using a linear metabolism that can provide an amalgam of the elemental characteristics of robots, humans, and nature as motifs. They introduced a planting plan for the admissions square, an existing forest, slope, vacation spot, the inside of a complex, and Eco Island, etc. by utilizing symbolic meaning and adjusting to the spatial characteristics of each space. In addition, they sought a detailed space by setting up zones tailored to the use and character of the subject area, having exhibitions and education about robots, vacation facilities for lodgers, various recreational and commercial facilities, and space for utopian gardens as themes. They planned Masan Robot Land to be a true cultural space that creates mental richness on the basis of not only the economical effects but also local emotion.
