Korean children reading Hangul was studied in children between 2 and 5 years of age. Subjects were 400 young children in each age group from kindergartens or day care centers in 6 cities of Jeon-buk Province. Teachers used a checklist based on Lee, Cha-Suk(2003) to assess children's reading ability. Data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, and $x^2$ using SPSS 10.0 program. Results showed age differences in young children's reading of Hangul. Developmental levels consisted of looking at pictures because of absence of linguistic awareness about words, skipping pages of text without pictures, pronouncing phonemes, being aware of phonemes and of the difference between pictures and print, and knowing that the same phonemes can be applied to different words.

The purpose of this study is to extract some suggestions in developing the elementary students' abilities to solve the fundamental mathematical problems by analyzing the degree of the correlation between the fundamental mathematical capability and the reading capability of the elementary 3th graders. In order to achieve this goal, this article analyzed the correlation between the fundamental mathematical capability and the reading capability on the basis of the studying result about the diagnostic evaluation conducted on 20,556 elementary 3th graders by the KICE as a national level basic scholastic achievement evaluation. The coefficient of correlation between the fundamental mathematical capability and the reading capability was .621. As such, it shows that the reading capability plays an important role in solving the fundamental mathematical problems. Particularly, the coefficient of correlation between the corollary arguments and the problem solving ability and the reading capability was the highest among the sub-capabilities of fundamental mathematical capability. In addition, judging from the result that the coefficient of correlation between the practical understanding capability and the solving capability of the fundamental mathematical problems was .528, it informs that the practical understanding capability takes an' important part in developing the fundamental mathematical capability of the elementary students. The results of this study support the hypothesis that the understanding capability plays the very important role in solving the fundamental mathematical problems. In particular, the results suggest that it is necessary that the pupils should be simultaneously supported not only by the capability of the mathematical basis, but also by the reading capability, especially the practical understanding capability about the problems, in order to develop the capability to solve the fundamental mathematical problems.

For the public library reading revitalization in this study it is to review program development examples which is differentiated by own library from the existing reading education and reading program. Based on the specialized program examples it intended suggesting a method of reading revitalization, after reviewing enlarged specialized function in the existing public library function, and analyzing related the reading activity status concerning with Seoul city public library, 'One Library One Book Reading' activity and U. S. A public library. Also, this study suggested future public library reading revitalization through the specialized quality service program development and construction related reading.

The purpose of this study was to explore the factors influencing preschoolers' emergent English as a second language literacy skills in terms of maternal language behavior in Korean and English picture book reading. This study was also conducted in order to identify the pathways of each factor. The subjects consisted of 201 mothers and their 3~5 year-old children from middle income families living in Seoul, Incheon, Gyyounggi-do, and Chungcheongbuk-do. The results indicated that the factors influencing preschoolers' emergent English as a second language literacy skills acquisition were as follows : maternal beliefs about the value of picture book reading, the child's level of interest in picture book reading, the time spent on picture book reading and maternal language behavior during picture book reading activities. The results further indicate that it is important that the mother shares desirable language interaction with her children in their native language while reading not only Korean but also English picture books when aiming to improve preschoolers' emergent English literacy skills.

The purpose of this study was to develop the indicatives for the analysis of the effects of Gyeonggi-do Book Sharing Project on pre-schoolers of supporter' reading care and thereby, suggest some data useful to the establishment of a reading culture promotion policy in Gyeonggi-do. Preceding studies and cases were reviewed to analyze the effects of the book-sharing project on pre-schoolers of supporter' reading care and thereby, develop some measurement indicatives, and thus, the indicatives were verified by professionals using the Delphi technique. Then, supporter of 3~5 year-old pre-schoolers were sampled from 7 cities and counties in Gyeonggi-do (Pocheon-si, Yangpyeong-gun, Yeoju-si, Dongducheon-si, Gapyeong-gun, Yeoncheon-gun and Yangju-si) to be divided into control and test groups and thereby, their reading care effect indicatives were compared before and after the test. The theoretical background is theory of family literacy, emergent literacy and parenting efficacy. As a result of developing the indicatives for analysis of pre-schoolers of supporter's reading care effects and comparing them for the sample pre-schoolers of supporter, before and after the test, the book-sharing project was found effective in improving reading care. The most difficult problem in pre-schoolers' earlier reading education involves acquisition of reading habit. So, it is deemed necessary to operate a regular book sharing project involving public organization and homes. As a result of developing the indicatives and analyzing the effects of the book-sharing project, it was confirmed that the project would serve to improve pre-schoolers of support's reading care and therefore, this study seems to provide some ground for the operation of a sustainable book-sharing project to narrow the education divide and promote a book reading culture in Gyeonggi-do.

This study has been made under the purpose of revealing the real effectiveness of Library Application Education, Life and Career Education and Reading Education in order to seek for the activation of school library and right roles of librarian teachers and subject teachers through connected to school library educations according to the free-semester system. For that, the survey was made to 73 teachers and 112 students, who already experienced connected library educations. As a result, the most frequent educations made by teachers and students was Reading Education, the second one was Library Application Education and the least one was Life and Career Education. In the aspect of effectiveness in teachers and students, the result came out quite meaningful and for teachers, especially the manner in the field of expertism, the satisfaction level of teachers was high in Life and Career Education in format style and creativity in source materials. For the students, the meaningful effectiveness shows in interaction field. Based on the research: first, study about various models of Reading Education which will be applied in connected to school library education according to the free-semester system. Second, additional researches are necessary for the expansional aspect of Library Application Education, Life and Career Education and Reading. Third, continuous studies are essential for the elements which can contribute effectiveness. Fourth, offering many strategical methods are essential to demonstrate creativity for the increase in satisfaction level for teachers.

It Is time to spur on the activation of the school library based on 'The Master Plan for Promoting School Library : Making Good School Library' launched by the Korean Ministry of Education & Human Resources Development in 2002. This study is about the introduction of reading motivation and incentive programs in the school libraries in the USA. The schools in the USA have been developing activation methods of the school library through various reading motivation and incentive programs. As a matter of fact, these reading motivation and incentive programs have been expanded by the commercial assistance, computerized tests, state supports, and each school's programs based on the national reading promotions. Consequently, this research is trying to find ways of activation for the school libraries in Korea through the reading motivation and incentive programs of the school libraries in the USA.

The purpose of this study is to research middle school student's reading problem and to suggest how to improve their reading competence through the use of the NIE. For this research, we proposed three research questions of study as below. First, what difference is there in English reading competence between experimental and control group? Second, what difference is there in the English reading competence according to English proficiency? Third, what are the effects of interest and satisfaction through NIE? The subject of a sample was 34 experimental group and 36 control group, total 70 eighth graders in Kwangju. The experimental group had been taught through NIE for 10 weeks. Grammar Translation Method was applied while teaching English to the control group. The data analyzing method was t-test through the statistics program SPSS12.0. Based on the result of this study, NIE approach was effective in improving the students' reading competence. Most of the students who were taught reading by NIE responded that they had more interest and satisfaction in the reading lesson.

The main purpose of this study was to examine the effects of interpretive style reading materials on high school students philosophical viewpoints on science. Subjects for this study were 137 girl students in four classes of a high school located in Daejeon city. The classes were divided into two groups: experimental groups and control groups. Students in the experimental groups were administered a series of the reading materials over thirty-six sessions. Additionally, PPP(Philosophical Perspectives Prove) was used in order to assess students philosophical viewpoints on science. Results of the study showed that the interpretive style reading materials takes effect on the change of students philosophical viewpoints on science. At the initial stage, a number of students exhibited viewpoints inclined toward inductivism. As time goes by, however, viewpoint of inductivism was decreased and view of falcificationism and view of relativism were increased. The results also indicated that the effect of intervention was stable.
