  • Mathematical concept exists in the structural form, not in the independent form. The purpose of this study is to consider the network which students actually have for the mathematical concept structure related to the properties of derivatives. First, we analyzed the properties of derivatives in 'Mathematics II' and showed the mathematical concept structure of the relations among derivatives, functions, and primitive functions as a network. Also, we investigated the understanding of high school students for the mathematical concept structure between derivatives and functions, and the structure between functions and second order derivatives when the functional formula is not given, and only the graph is given. The results showed that students mainly focus on the relation of 'function-derivatives', the thinking process for direction of derivative and the thinking style for algebra. On this basis, we suggest the educational implication that is necessary for students to build the network properly.

  • The purpose of this study was to review the studies related to concept learning forcusing on the meanings, kinds, and characteristics of concepts. Then the characteristics of the concepts were analyzed in the three positions: metaphysics, epistemology, and psychology. It was identified that the word 'concept' were confused with the other words such as conception, construct, idea, notion, identity. It was also found that researchers defined the concepts by the use of various meanings. The instructional strategies for scientific concepts were also analyzed in this study. The study found that the instructional strategies for concept learning were developed according to the views about the nature of concepts. Described on the paper are three types of instructional models for science concepts suggested by constructivists as follows: concept formation, concept differentiation, and exchange. They developed the models based on the current research on the misconceptions of major scientific concepts.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of elementary pre-service teacher's science concept level on teaching difficulty, teaching satisfaction, and class evaluation. This study was conducted for 117 first grade students who are studying at P National University of Education. For this study, 117 students were divided into two groups according to the science concept level, and teaching difficulty, teaching satisfaction, and class evaluation score of the two groups were analyzed. The conclusion of this study is as follows. First, the elementary pre - service teacher group with a higher level of science concept showed significantly lower teaching difficulties than those with lower levels. This shows us that if primary pre-service teachers who have high science concept level, they can teach primary school science more effectively. Second, the elementary pre - service teacher group with high level of science concept got higher score on teaching satisfaction than the group with lower level of science concept, but it did not show statistically significant. Third, the elementary pre - service teachers with higher science concept level showed significantly higher scores on class evaluation than those with lower concept.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of concept sketches on the understanding and scientific attitude in high school student's learning of weather change. Among the various fields of meteorology, especially in weather change, we often deal with the change of the spatiotemporal change in an abstract way. So making use of 'Concept Sketches'- simplified sketches which represent the main features, principles, processes and interrelationships of the learning contents using some concise explanations, signs and terms - could help the students learn the phenomena of weather change efficiently. This study's aim was to check up the effect and analyze the results of the lesson including the concept sketches. As a result of this study, concept sketches group showed significant improvement compared to the other groups in understanding of weather change and in scientific attitude, too. In students' recognition research of concept sketches showed that students found the class more interesting with improved concentration and had a chance to review through concept sketching, which is helpful for their learning. Considering the above research results, the study which applies concept sketching required the students to actively process their knowledge, and had a positive effect on the understanding of weather changes. Most of all, drawing the pictures which is a familiar activity helped the students to take part in the class eagerly.

  • In this study we investigated the types of inscriptions representing the concept of atom and molecule in the 9th grade science textbooks developed under the 7th National Curriculum, and analyzed the processes of interpreting those inscriptions on the view of semiotics. The concept of atom and molecule was represented in various ways such as circular diagram, matters of everyday life, ball-and-stick, and STM graphic, etc. We identified two kinds of inscriptions on the basis of the possibilities of handling models: the inscriptions that represent concept of atom and molecule by image; the inscriptions that represent concept of atom and molecule by using specific matters. We analyzed the processes of interpreting inscriptions systematically with a semiotic model that includes ‘structuring processes' and ‘translating processes'. The interpretation of inscriptions representing concept of atom and molecule was a complex process requiring many steps of interpreting works. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.

  • In this study, concept centered approach and process centered approach in developing integrated science curriculum were compared and compromised between two approaches. It seems that two approaches are in antagonistic relations. The superficial conflictions getween two approaches are not because they are antagonistic in their nature, but because their interesting points are different. The concept centered approahc is interest in fundamental scientific concepts and the process centered approach is interested in scientific enquiry. If science is the composition of enquiry processes and concepts produced by enquiry processes, scientific enquiry process and scientific concept must not be inconsistant. Although concepts are not unchangeable, new concepts and advanced concepts are based on the old concepts. Enquiry activity which is not based on concepts also cannot be significant enquiry. Although fundamental concepts in science is very important, in order to apply concepts to varios phenomena, and to understand concepts more deeply the student should understand concept through the process by which the concepts are derived. As we have discussed above, only the concept centered approach or the process centered approach itself is not complete. Comparing these two uncomplete approaches to integrated science curriculum, we can find out that two approaches are in complementary relations. Because integrated science is based on the idea that natural phenomena should not be understood in fragments, but should be understood as mutually related system' the integrated science curriculum includes both the fundamental scientific concepts and scientific enquiry processes.
