A Novel Claw Pole Eddy Current Load for Testing a DC Counter Rotating Motor Part I: Construction

  • Providing variable load for testing a motor in high speed conditions is usually a difficult task. The eddy current brake can be used in application of load testing of motors. This paper deals with construction of a novel claw pole eddy current brake which is employed as a load for a DC counter rotating motor (CRM). These kinds of motors have two inner and outer shafts that rotate in opposite directions simultaneously, which are particularly suitable for under water propulsion systems. The prototype 45KW eddy current brake consists of two parts. One of them is installed on the inner shaft of the 60KW DC CRM and the other one is installed on its outer shaft. The simulation and experimental results with prototype brakes are also analyzed by using MATLAB/Simulink and the operational characteristic of the brake is demonstrated as a function of the motor speed and current of the magnetic poles.

  • 본 연구에서는 재활운동기기에 적합한 운동부하 조절이 가능한 영구자석형 비 접촉식 원형 브라켓 맴돌이 전류 부하 제동장치를 제안하고 성능을 실험적으로 평가하였다. 제안한 원형 부하 제동장치의 토크 값은 고정 부하를 갖는 "ㄷ"형 부하 제동장치에 비해 49%의 제동력으로 평가되었지만 도전율 변화와 공극의 간격 변화로 다양한 부하 조절이 가능함을 확인하였다. 본 연구에서 제안된 부하 제동장치는 사용자의 상태에 따라 부하 조절이 가능하며 운동기기의 소형화 및 원가 절감 등의 장점을 갖는 운동기기 적용이 가능할 것으로 기대된다.

  • In eddy, current brake system(BS), high current may flow for increase of braking force within a short time. Therefore, the estimation of thermal characteristics for BS is required. In this paper, the thermal characteristics of eddy-current brake for the Korean high speed train are analyzed by using 2-dimensional Finite Element Method (2D-FEM) and measured.

  • Eddy current is usually generated in material with high conductivity by time-varying source such as AC current and also is induced in the moving source with relative velocity. The contactless magnetic brakes make use of the braking force from the eddy current generated by moving source and currently used for the secondary brakes of heavy trucks, buses and rail vehicles. This study aims to design the magnetization pattern of a permanent magnet type eddy current brake system to maximize the braking force. The analysis of the brake system is based on the two-dimensional finite element analysis. We use the sequential linear programming as the optimizer and the adjoint variable method for the sensitivity analysis.

  • The development of linear Eddy-Current brake systems has gradually gone beyond the adhesion limit in high-speed vehicles. In particular, the practicality of using permanent magnet in Eddy-Current brake systems is obviously recent, due to the manifold improvement in magnet materials and technology. On the basis of analytical two-dimensional field solution, this paper deals with flux density and force calculation about the linear Eddy-Current brake systems: DC excited electromagnet, Halbach magnetized and vertical magnetized permanent magnet.

  • In recent years, numerous studies have attempted to find and explore the auxiliary brake and the oil pressure type and electrical type are mainly used. However, the model proposed here is to self-excited eddy current brake. The advantage of this is it does not require an external power supply and can be produced to reduce the size than others. This self-eddy current brake consists of RLC circuit so resistance, inductance and capacitance value can be considered a fixed value. But, inductance and resistance value changes depending on the shape, temperature and magnetic alteration. Therefore, in this paper, the focal point is characteristic analysis according to the parameter variations. Also, using this result, this paper explains how to estimate the capacitance.

  • Dynamic behavior of high speed train is very important because the high speed train should be safe and satisfied with the ride comfort. An eddy current brake system is mounted on trailer bogie and wheelset. The eddy current braking force longitudinally exerts on the articulated trailer bogie and the attraction force vertically exerts on the wheelset. Because a frame of eddy current brake system is flexible, these forces generate the vertical vibration at middle point of the frame. Also, the vibration change the vertical clearance between an electromagnet and top of rail which affect the magnitude of braking and attracting forces. Therefore, the dynamic behavior of the eddy current braking system must be predicted for design the dynamic characteristic of its mounting system when normally operate on rail which have irregularity. Vampire program is used for Prediction of the dynamic behavior of an eddy current braking system.

  • This paper describes a performance analysis of self-excited eddy current brake(SECB). Stator winding of SECB is connected by capacitor instead of voltage source, and SECB's braking force is generated by L-C resonance. SECB has wide range of driving and nonlinear inductance as well. Therefore, it is important to select capacitance based on the value of inductance. This paper discusses about the process of deciding capacitance and the change of resonance frequency based on the inductance change in each speed. Also the braking force was confirmed by the experimental model of SECB.

  • In this paper, static analysis of eddy current brake's frame, which is one of key structural components of brake system for high speed train, was performed in order to evaluate the design by computer simulation. Calculation was carried out in general for the driving modes 'braking' and 'frame in upper position(Brakes inactive)'. Several yield stress load cases and fatigue load cases were analysed for each of the driving modes. The fatigue load resulting from the Multi Body System simulation was also taken into consideration. The simulation results shows that some of structural part should be improved for more increasing reliability of frame.
