  • The purpose of this study was to find out the variables affecting the successful aging of the elderly. To achieve this purpose, a survey was conducted with 388 seniors living in the Jeonbuk area. The data were analyzed using multiple regressions and a path analysis. The major findings were as follows: First, statistically significantly different perception of successful aging was observed according to their marital status. Second, successful aging of the elderly with a spouse was influenced by personal variables, such as their own perception of economic status, gender, education level and physical condition. In contrast, successful aging of the elderly without a spouse was most influenced by social variables, such as family support. Third, the attitude towards aging directly affected successful aging. Various personal and social characteristics indirectly affected successful aging via attitudes towards aging according to the presence of a spouse.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the reported patterns of sexuality and life satisfaction of the elderly. Methods: Study participants were 490 older than 60 years of age who participated in a sexuality education program over five provinces. Data were collected from August to October, 2009 by using a structured questionnaire. The data were analyzed using PASW/WIN 18.0 program. Results: 163 participants (33.3%) reported being sexually active with a frequency on an average of 3.16 times per month. The reported life satisfaction of the participants was significantly different in terms of education level ($p$ <.001), health status ($p$ <.001), economic status ($p$ <.001), sexual behaviors ($p$ <.001), and attitude on the sexuality ($p$=.023). The reported life satisfaction was significantly associated with sexual attitudes and the frequency of sexual behaviors. Conclusion: These results suggest that the elderly person has a positive sexual attitude although not all elderly people are sexually active. There are several influencing factors on life satisfaction of the elderly. Therefore, it is needed to investigate the sexuality of the elderly more closely to enhance their life satisfaction.

  • Objectives: The purpose of the study was to test a model of physical activity of elderly living in Korea, determine significant factors contributing the physical activity, and examine significant paths in the model. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using a convenience sample of 207 elderly men and women, aged 60 and older, residing in Busan Metropolitan City. Data were collected from July to August 2009 and analyzed using Predictive Analytics Software (PASW) and Analysis of a Moment Structures (AMOS). Results: The fitness of the modified model was confirmed to be appropriate (${\chi}^2$ = 55.61, ${\chi}^2$/df = 1.32, p = .078, RMSEA = .04, GFI = .96, AGFI = .91, NFI = .90, NNFI = .94, CFI = .97, PNFI = .48). The elder's age, previous exercise behavior, and self-efficacy were significant in explaining the variance in their physical activity. We found that (a) perceived health status, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, and social support directly affected self-efficacy; (b) previous exercise behavior and perceived health status directly affected perceived benefits; (c) previous exercise behavior directly affected perceived barriers; and (d) and education level, extent of pocket money, and economic level directly affected social support. Conclusions: The younger the age, the more previous exercise experience, and the higher the self-efficacy, the more S. Korean elders demonstrated improved physical activity.

Social participation is an important contributing factor to active aging and social integration of the older adults living in poverty. This study aims to identify factors affecting social participation of the poor elderly. Data from the second wave of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing was used for the analyses and 1,346 poor elderly aged over 65 were analyzed. The findings showed that age, education, health status, a level of depression, financial stress, and economic activity were associated with the social participation of the elderly living in poverty. • The purpose of this study was to assess risk indicators of depressive symptoms such as demographic, socio-economical domains (age, gender, marital status, education, child, religion, income, health, friendship) and personality domains (neurotic personality, self-esteem and life goal attitude) of community dwelling elderly persons. A total of 300 community-residing elderly participants aged 65+ in a metropolitan city in Korea, were recruited for this interview survey. The interview covered demographic and socio-economic characteristics, and administration of the 20-item Korean Version of CES-D, the 10-item Self-esteem, the 19-item Neuroticism and the 10-itm Goal Instability scale. The prevalence of significant depressive symptoms (CES-D scale >= 21) was 31%. Logistic regression analysis showed high risk for depression was associated with high neuroticism, less intimate friendship, high goa1 instability, and childlessness, respectively in the order of significance. Factors in the personality domains were more strongly associated with depressive symptoms than factors in the socio- economical domains. Both cultural and universal meaning of the findings was discussed with regard to intervention.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate factors that influence sexual intercourse among middle school students in South Korea. Methods: Using statistics from the 8th (2012) Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey, hierarchical logistic regression analysis was conducted. The study sample comprised 37,297 middle school students aged primarily 12 to 15. Results: The significant predictors of sexual intercourse were grade, ever smoking, ever drinking, habitual or purposeful drug use, economic status, weekly allowance, cohabitation with family, and type of school. Conclusion: The results suggest that intensified sex education is needed not only in the 1st grade of middle school, but also in the upper grades of elementary school. Sexual health interventions for high-risk groups may be needed, given the factors predicting sexual intercourse.

  • Health capacity to work for the elderly is an essential piece of information for designing social policies in an aging society. Here, we assess the health capacity to work of older men in South Korea and provide a cross-country comparison. Following the methodology proposed by Milligan and Wise (2012), which uses the cohort mortality rate as a proxy for overall health status, we quantify the additional employment capacity of current older men in reference to the mortality-employment relationship of a generation ago. Despite the high employment rate of older men in South Korea, we find substantial additional employment capacity among older men (those aged 55 or more) as of 2016 comparable in size to those found in other advanced countries. We also find evidence that older men are not merely capable of working but are also willing to work, and many of them are increasingly combining pension income and work. These findings suggest that labor supply disincentives for older men embedded in public pension systems in South Korea need to be thoroughly reexamined and adjusted accordingly lest they should inhibit the labor supply of older workers.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify factors(perceived health and social support) affecting social capital formation of the elderly. Methods: Samples consisted of 184 people aged over 65 years old in one county of Kyungsangbukdo. Data were analyzed with t-test, ANOVA and regression analysis. Results: First, social support(both emotional support and instrumental support) were significantly different by economic status. Secondly, regression analysis showed that perceived health affected a positive influence on social capital in Model1, which analyzed only perceived health. However, Model2, which analyzed perceived health and social support(emotional support, instrumental support) at the same time, showed that only instrumental support affected social capital formation. Conclusions: It was suggested to develop customized health promotion and job creation are required for social capital formation of the elderly.
