  • PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to compare ultrasound images of trunk muscles according to gender in healthy subjects. METHODS: Twenty six subjects(13 males and 13 females) were enrolled in this study. The thickness of trunk muscles was measured for transverse abdominis (TrA), external oblique abdominis (EOA), internal oblique abdominis (IOA), and multifidus (MF) using ultrasound. The thickness of the muscles was measured for the length of cross-section except for fascia. The muscle thickness wasmeasured at the both side, then the mean value was calculated. Also, each of trunk muscle wasanalysed by echodensity, white area index. RESULTS: As a results, there was significant difference in muscle thickness of EOA, IOA according to gender (p<0.05). The male was significant increase than female of EOA, IOA in muscle thickness. There was significant difference in echo intensity of TrA, MF according to gender(p<0.05). The female was significant increase than male of TrA, MF in echo intensity. There was significant difference in white area index of EOA according to gender(p<0.05). The female was significant increase than male of EOA in white area index. CONCLUSION: The findings of this study suggest that healthy male have a greater EOA, IOA trunk muscle thickness than female. However, the difference of muscle quality between male and female was showed through thisexperiment. Therefore, the ultrasonography images will be useful tool for seeing quantitative and qualitative difference of trunk muscles according to gender.

  • This study was performed to examine the clinical, serological, ultrasonographic and pathological findings in dogs with acute liver disease induced by tetrachlorethylene at 4 times of anthelminthic oral dose. The results obtained through this experiment could be summarized as follows: 1. The dogs administered with tetrachlorethylene, revealed decreased body weight, and showed lethargy and depression. 2. In serological findings, bilirubin values slightly increased, AST and ALT was decreased at 1∼3 days, and after that time increased according to the lapse of days, and revealed the highest at 5 days, and decreased to normal values at 6 days. 3. In ultrasonographic findings, branches of the portal vein were increased, the echodensity of the liver parenchyma was decreased at early stage, and increased at mid stage, and decreased at last stage. 4. In histopathological findings, necrosis of parenchymal cell, and perivascular hemorrhage were observed more severely at 6 days, as compared with 3 days. There results suggest that ultrasonographic examination is considered to be a more simple, rapid, non-invasive and useful diagnostic method for acute liver parenchymal lesion.

  • Purpose: This study conducts quantitative evaluation or structural and functional characteristics or normal skeletal muscle with ultrasound image and surface electromyography, and is to provide basic materials for utilizing ultrasound image analysis in physical therapy diagnosis and assessment of skeletal muscle. Methods: Measurement of three stages was conducted with 88 normal adults between their twenties and seventies, correlations and differences using collected data according to age and gender were compared and correlations among measured items were analyzed and then the following conclusions were obtained. Results: Analysis of ultrasound image of normal skeletal muscle showed that density, median frequency had the closest relations with age. In addition, it was found that there were high correlations between density explaining structural characteristics of skeletal muscle and median frequency explaining functional characteristics. Conclusion: Analysis of ultrasound image makes complex evaluation of structure and function of skeletal muscle possible when it is connected with functional evaluation method using physical measurement surface electromyography as well as quantitative evaluation of structural changes of skeletal muscle and is effective in complementing physical therapy diagnosis centering around functionality evaluation.

  • Purpose: The objective of this study was to offer primary clinical data examining whether change of imaging structure and quantitative evaluation of muscle activity on myofascial trigger points can lead to implementation of an analytical technique for evaluation of myofascial pain diagnoses. In addition, we examined the effect of a variety of mediation techniques, in order to examine neuromuscular physiological characteristics of myofascial trigger points muscle by comparing differences in pressure pain threshold and ultrasound imaging. Methods: Participants in the study included 30 adults in their twenties. The subjects were divided into the normal and myofascial trigger points groups. Clinical outcomes were evaluated by pressure pain threshold for pain and ultrasound imaging was performed for evaluation of the structural characteristics of muscle. Independent t-test was used for statistical analysis. Results: The two groups showed statistical significance in the change in pressure pain threshold (p<0.05). Findings of ultrasound imaging analysis showed no significant differences, increased muscle thickness was observed (p>0.05). Findings of ultrasound imaging analysis showed significant differences, increased muscle echodensity was observed (p<0.05). Findings on ultrasound imaging analysis showed significant differences, increased muscle white area index was observed (p<0.05). Conclusion: From these results, active myofascial trigger points muscle showed quality deterioration on ultrasound imaging. Thorough evaluation of imaging structure and physiological characteristics can be useful quantitative analytical techniques for diagnosis of myofascial pain syndrome and a primary factor reflected in physical therapy intervention.

  • In this study, we evaluated the crow's fret of 95 Korean female by using mechanical assessments; Skin-Visiometer SV 600 and Dermascan C. Transparency profilometry (Skin Visiometer) were using a very thin skin print which allowed parallel light to pass through and was analysed immediately after production. High-frequency (20 MHz) ultrasonography (Dermascan C) enabled non-invasive evaluation in skin thickness and echodensity. We found a correlation between skin roughness and dermal density. Particularly, we showed a significant correlation between skin roughness (R2) and dermal thickness. Also, we demostrated a significant negative correlation between dermal density and dermal thickness (p < 0.05). Therefore, the ultrasonography system might be considered a very useful method in wrinkle evaluation with the transparency profilometry. Further study will be required.
