THE EFFECT OF MECHANICAL PROCESSING OF HAY ON THE EATING AND RUMINATION BEHAVIOUR IN SHEEP

  • An experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of change in length of hay offered on eating and rumination behaviour in sheep using three types of hay diets (L: long, M: 8.0-cm cut, S: 1.2-cm cut) and 3 Japanese Corriedale wethers, and the experiment was designed as $3{\times}3$ latine square. The time spent eating per 100 g hay was significantly shorter with long (L) hay (p < 0.05) than with chopped (M and S) hay, and therefore, the eating rate (g D.M./min.) was significantly higher in the former (p < 0.05) than in the latter. Rumination appearance (the lag time after eating) tended to be longer with long hay than with chopped hay, but not significantly (p > 0.05). Daily time spent ruminating, the actual chewing time and daily number of chews tended to be more in feeding long hay than in feeding chopped hay, but not significantly. Daily number of rumination periods was significantly more with long hay (p < 0.01) than with chopped hay. Cyclic rate tended to be longer with long hay than with chopped hay, in particular, the difference in values between long hay and 8.0-cm cut hay was significant statistically (p < 0.01). The rumination index (time spent ruminating/100 g D.M, eaten) tended to be higher with long hay than with chopped hay, and the difference in values between long hay and 1.2-cm cut hay was significant statistically (p < 0.05). Bolus time was significantly longer with long hay (p < 0.01) than that with 8.0-cm cut hay. The circadian pattern of ruminating time was not changed by the changes in length of hay eaten.

SOCIAL RELATIONSHIP AND SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION IN A SMALL HERD OF JAPANESE BLACK CATTLE IN A DRY-LOT

  • Behaviour of 7 horned Japanese Black Cattle (3-9 years old) kept in a $450m^2$ dry-lot under loose housing condition was observed in the daytime (0930-1730 h) during 3 consecutive days. Eating and lying behaviour of cattle and the positions of all animals when lying together were recorded at 10-min intervals. Agonistic encounters and social licking interactions in the herd were also recorded. The cattle established a social hierarchy which was near linear. An irregularity in the diurnal rhythm of lying behaviour was found on the 3rd day, which appeared to be caused by oestrus behaviour of a herdmate. Eating frequency showed greater variation among individuals than lying frequency, and the most dominant animal ate most frequently in the herd. The spatial pattern of the herd when lying indicated a relatively loose dispersion in the lot. Higher ranking cattle tended to lie down more frequently near the hay rack in the lot, so that lower ranking animals had more difficult access to feed. Cattle with more social licking interactions had a tendency to lie down near each other irrespective of proximity of social order, therefore it was suggested that social preference among particular individuals occurred in the herd.

Validation of the Dutch Eating Behaviour Questionnaire Children (DEBQ-C) version in Turkish preadolescence children

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTİVES: It is important to determine Dysfunctional eating behaviors such as dietary restraint and overeating tendencies in order to provide weight management and acquire the right habits in children. The purpose of this study was to test the reliability and validity of Dutch Eating Behaviour Questionnaire Children (DEBQ-C) with Turkish preadolescent children. MATERIALS/METHODS: This research included 440 preadolescents (9.3 ± 6.9 years and 235 girls, 205 boys). The instrument is divided into three subscales, each with 20 items. Emotional eating, restrained eating, and external eating are the three subscales. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to assess the construct validity of the Turkish version of the DEBQ-C, and Cronbach α values were computed to evaluate the subscale reliabilities. There were 20 observable variables and three latent variables in the hypothesized model. RESULTS: Fit indices for the hypothesized model were good (×2/degree of freedom = 1.96; root mean square error of approximation = 0.05; comparative fit index = 0.95; goodness of fit index = 0.93). These findings revealed that the Turkish version of the DEBQ-C has a factor structure that was identical to the three-factor structure of the original scale. The Turkish version of the DEBQ-C subscales has internal consistency coefficients ranging from 0.72 (external eating) to 0.86. (emotional eating). CONCLUSIONS: The DEBQ-C Turkish version is a viable and reliable tool for measuring overeating tendencies in Turkish preadolescents, according to the findings.

THE EFFECT OF A GRADUAL INCREASE OR DECREASE OF DAILY HAY INTAKE ON EATING AND RUMINATING BEHAVIOUR IN SHEEP

  • In the present experiment, the relationship between rumination and the amount of roughage eaten by sheep was investigated in detail. Daily time spent eating was obviously changed along with an increase or decrease in daily hay intake. Daily time spent ruminating and daily number of boli regurgitated was also linearly increased or decreased with an increase or decrease of daily hay intake, and there were regression lines between daily amount of hay eaten and daily ruminating time or daily number of boli with statistical significant coefficients. Cyclic rate (total rumination time(s)/number of boli regurgitated) and daily number of rumination periods did not change in an outline along with the changes in daily hay intake. From these results, it can be suggested that daily dry matter intake by sheep could be presumed by measuring daily time spent ruminating when they were fed only roughage feed.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of colors of feed-trough on the eating behaviour of pullets. A total of 64 12wks old pullets were assigned to a $4{\times}4$ Latin square design with 4 treatments(control, blue, yellow, red colored feed-troughs). The results of the study are summarized as follows: 1. Average daily gain and eed intake of the pullets were significantly(P<0.05) decreased with red color feed-troughs. 2. Feed conversion ratio appeared to be improved in the yellow color group compared to the others. 3. Total time spent for eating were not significantly different, among treatments.

전북지역 교사의 비만도에 따른 체중조절 행동, 식습관 및 건강관련 생활습관에 관한 연구 (A Study on Weight Control Behaviour, Eating Habits and Health-related Life Habits According to Obesity Degree of Teacher in Jeonbuk Province, Korea)

  • The purpose of this study was to compare weight control behaviour, eating habits, and health-related life habits according to degree of obesity among normal, overweight, and obese groups. Self-perception of weight and desire for weight control in males (p<0.001) and females (p<0.001) varied among the three groups. Reasons (p<0.001), experience (p<0.01), and method of weight control (p<0.05) were different among the three female groups, whereas males did not show any differences. Intake of nutritional supplements in the male obese group was higher compared to other groups (p<0.01), whereas eating habits were not significantly different among the three groups for both males and females. Food habits score for intake of fruits, milk, and yogurt were higher in females than males (p<0.001). Correlation coefficients of food habits score and anthropometric measurements showed that hip circumference was negative for intake of fruits in males, whereas RBW and BMI were positive for food combination, intake of bean products, and fishes in females (p<0.05). Frequency and fitting exercise in the obese female group were lower than in the other groups (p<0.01). Therefore, proper nutritional education for obese individuals is recommended proper self-perception of weight, good food habits, and regular exercise.

소아청소년의 비허증(脾虛證)과 체질량 지수 및 식습관과의 관계에 대한 조사 연구 (The Study on the Correlation Between Spleen Deficiency Syndrome, Body Mass Index (BMI) and Eating Habit in Children and Adolescents)

  • Objectives The purpose of this study is to understand the correlation between spleen deficiency syndrome, body mass index (BMI) and eating habit in children and adolescents and to provide foundation of preventive care and treatment. Methods A survey was conducted with 115 children and adolescents, who were 4th, 5th and 6th grade of elementary school in Gwangju from March 2nd, 2016 to April 8th, 2016. Body mass index (BMI) was calculated using the measured height and weight. Spleen deficiency syndrome and eating habit in children and adolescents were investigated by using the Deficiency of the Spleen Questionnaire and Korean Children's Eating Behaviour Questionnaire (K-CEBQ). A data analysis was performed by using SPSS 23.0 program. Results 1. There was no statistically significant correlation between spleen deficiency syndrome and body mass index (BMI). 2. Children and adolescents with spleen deficiency syndrome were interested in food rather than avoided it. 3. There was a positive correlation between body mass index (BMI) and FR (Food responsiveness), "Food approach". The correlation between the healthy weight group and FR is statistically significant negative correlation. Conclusions Due to various limitations, it is difficult to generalize the correlation between spleen deficiency syndrome, body mass index (BMI) and eating habit in children and adolescents. Therefore additional research is necessary to confirm this study's findings.

일반 여성의 감각처리 특성에 따른 섭식 태도의 차이 (Differences in Eating Attitudes According to the Sensory Processing Characteristics of the Average Woman)

  • 목적 : 일반 여성의 감각처리 특성에 따른 섭식 태도의 차이를 확인하였다. 연구방법 : 241명의 일반 여성을 대상으로 청소년/성인 감각프로파일(Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile; AASP)과 섭식 태도 검사(Eating Attitude Test; EAT-26)를 이용하여 설문조사를 실시하였다. 감각처리 특성에 따른 섭식 태도는 독립표본 t-검정과 일원배치분산분석(one-way ANOVA)을 사용하여 분석하였고, 사후분석은 Scheffe Test를 실시하였다. 결과 : 감각처리 특성 중 등록저하와 섭식 통제, 감각회피와 폭식 및 음식몰두를 제외하면, 감각처리 특성에 따라 섭식 태도는 모두 유의한 차이가 나타났다(p<.05). 등록저하가 대부분의 사람보다 (매우) 많은 경우 거식과 폭식 및 음식몰두의 태도가 부정적인 것으로 나타났고, 감각추구가 대부분의 사람과 유사하거나 (매우) 많은 경우 모든 섭식 태도가 부정적인 것으로 나타났다. 감각민감성이 대부분의 사람보다 (매우) 많은 경우 폭식 및 음식몰두의 태도가 부정적인 것으로 나타났으며, 감각회피가 대부분의 사람보다 (매우) 많은 경우 거식의 태도가 부정적인 것으로 나타났다. 결론 : 감각처리 특성에 따라 섭식 태도에 차이가 있었으며, 이를 토대로 일반 여성들의 섭식 태도를 조절하기 위한 하나의 방안으로 감각통합 중재를 제안할 수 있다.

영양교육 실시교와 미실시교 초등학생들의 영양지식ㆍ식행동 및 영양소 섭취 상태 비교 연구 (A Comparative Study on Nutrition Knowledge, Eating Behavior and Nutrient Intake for Students at Elementary Schools with and without Nutrition Education Program)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of the nutrition education on the nutrition knowledge, eating behaviour and nutrient intake of the children. Questionnaire and dietary record were executed to 105 children in the 4th and 5th grade in elementary school with nutrition education and 107 in the same grade without nutrition education. The results were as follows; In nutrition aspect, higher acknowledgement and precision level was observed(p<0.001) in the educated group. Higher practice will of nutrition knowledge, lower rate of skipping meal, better appetite were also observed in the educated group. In the aspect of food group intake, meatㆍfishㆍegg, tofu and bean, fruits, milk and milk products intake frequency were higher in the educated group. Most nutrient intake except fat and vitamin B₂ were observed to be higher in the educated group. Therefore, it was concluded that continuous nutrition education was recommended in order to put positive effect on the eating behaviour and nutrient intake of the children.
