  • Objectives: The present study reports a case of chronic anemia patient who was significantly improved after taking Nokyongdaebo-tang (NYDBT) Methods: A 48-year-old male patient diagnosed with iron deficiency anemia (IDA) visited the Daejeon Korean medicine Hospital of Daejeon University on June 2018. The patient was treated with Korean medicine for 23 months including acupuncture, herbal medicine and Sasang constitutional medicine prescription. Improvement of anemia was assessed by changes of Hemoglobin value. Laboratory analysis was used to evaluate the safety of treatment. Results: Chronic anemia has significantly improved since taking NYDBT on 9 days (2019.12.09-2019.12.17). The Hb value has been maintained in the normal range since it first entered the normal range on January 18, 2020. The patient had become transfusion-free and this condition persisted for 6 months after stopping the transfusion. Conclusion: This case demonstrates the therapeutic potential of Sasang constitutional medicine for chronic anemia as a personalized medicine.

  • The study was designed to test anti-platelet effect and find out anti-platelet mechanism of extract from Gamisopunghwalheol-tang in vitro. The extract was investigated for the inhibition against the aggregation of human platelet suspensions induced from collagen by aggregometer. And also the extract was investigated for the inhibition against the aggregation of human platelet suspensions who is taking aspirin or clopidogrel induced from collagen by aggregometer. In collagen-induced platelet aggregation test, the extract significantly inhibited collagen-induced platelet aggregation in a concentration-dependent manner(p<0.05). The extract significantly inhibited collagen-induced platelet aggregation of human platelet who is taking aspirin or clopidogrel ing 0 mg/ml concentration(p<0.05). And the extract inhibited more ingpatients who is taking aspirin. These results show that the extract from Gamisopunghwalheol-tang has anti-platelet aggregation effect.

  • Objectives This experimental study was carried out to evaluate the effects of Phellinus Linteus on immune activation. Methods In order to investigate the effect of Phellinus Linteus, the following was performed: The fraction of $CD4^+$, $CD8^+$, $CD19^+$ in splenic cell, gene expression of IL-12 (p35), IL-12 (p40) , $IFN-{\gamma}$, and splenic cell proliferation by PL-E. Results PL-E helped $CD4^+$, $CD8^+$, $CD19^+$ expression more effectively compared with control group. PL-E helped IL-12 (p35), IL-12 (p40), $IFN-{\gamma}$ gene expression in splenic cells more effectively compared with control group. PL-E proliferated splenic cells more effectively compared with control group. Conclusions: It is suggested that PL-E is able to activate immune response system.

  • We made a comparative study, A patient who had suffered dizziness and ataxia took Hyungbangsabaek-san(荊防瀉白散) at first and next took Hyungbangdojeock-san(荊防導赤散). He was diagnosed as a Soyangin suffering chest knotting syndrome(結胸證) by Sasang constitutional medicine(四象醫學) and took two kinds of herbs in a row. We observed his phase of dizziness and ataxia with the conditions of stool and urine excavation, pink eye, sweating, and tongue color and tongue coating. When he took Hyungbangdojeock-san these conditions improved more than when he took the other one and his dizziness and ataxia also improved. Hyungbangdojeock-san was more useful when the severity of the disease was shallower and he had more exterior syndromes than Hyungbangsabaek-san.

Methods: A male left breast cancer patient diagnosed with metastasis on lung at July 2019. After Video assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) left lower lobe (LLL) lobectomy and En bloc wedge resection the patient visited the Daejeon korean medicine hospital of Daejeon university East West Cancer Center (EWCC) to treat operation-site (op-site) pain, dysphagia, anorexia with Korean Medicine Treatment. The patient was treated with Korean Medicine based ICT for an approximately 20 days. The clinical outcomes were measured by National Cancer Institute Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Event (NCI-CTCAE), Numeral rating scale (NRS) and Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG). The safety of treatment was verified by blood tests. Results: After treatment, op-site pain was improved from NRS 9 to 6, dysphagia and anorexia were relieved from NRS 9 to 2. And ECOG score of the patient was improved from grade 2 to 1. • Objectives : Traditional medicine(TM) of East Asia has been taking its status as part of complementary and alternative medicine(CAM) in the UK. However, the efficacy and safety issues make it hard to be accepted in the healthcare system. The aim of the research is to find out the current status of TM of East Asia in the UK and to discuss some issues around its acceptance as formal healthcare method. Methods : Articles, books and regulations related to the acceptance of TM of East Asia were analysed and the internet websites were visited such as Westlaw UK for legal materials, government websites for formal documents, and some UK-based associations. Keyword searches were followed and the essential parts from the articles and documents were generalised for the analysis and discussion. Results : Issues over TM of East Asia include identity as medicine, efficacy and safety, and the statutory regulation can be a measure for the acceptance. Osteopathy and chiropractic therapies came under statutory regulation among the CAM in the UK. Conclusions : TM of East Asia could be under the statutory regulation in the near future. Efficacy and safety issues are the challenging barrier. However, the approach from the viewpoint of TM of East Asia is necessary for development and good practice. The simplified registration procedure for traditional herbal medicinal product in EU can be the model. Education, evaluation, assessment and managing quality of practice are essential for the standard care and formal regulation.
