  • The marine algal flora and community structure were investigated at three sites in Ulsan on the southeast coast of Korea between August 2005 and July 2006. Ninety-one benthic algae species were identified, including 14 Chlorophyta, 21 Phaeophyta, and 56 Rhodophyta species. Of the 91 seaweeds, 19 species were found throughout the survey period. The wet weight biomass ranged from 310.8 to 2,960.4 g $m^{-2}$ during the study period. The maximum biomass was recorded at Sinri, and the minimum was recorded at Daesong. The R/P, C/P and (R+C)/P values reflecting flora characteristics were 2.67, 0.67, and 3.33, respectively. The flora investigated could be classified into six functional groups: coarsely branched (46.2%), thick leathery (22.0%), filamentous (16.5%), Sheet (7.7%), jointed calcareous (4.4%), and crustose (3.3%) forms. A cluster analysis produced two groups that differed meaningfully: one included the site Sinri-summer and the other included the sites Daesong and Jinha.

  • Relative importance of maritime transport that takes charge of main current of freight in country' economy is very large. Especially, port and facility carry out important role which treats freight of import and export smoothly and improves international trade as turning point, to achieve key role on connection and association between sea and land. For such reason, enlargement of port facilities or development of port needs to grasp exactly the utilization of port, attributes and selective factors of shipper. On the other hand, the amounts of physical distribution on Mokpo port located in Korean west coast are increasing, with fast economic growth of East Asian including China. This study uses discrete choice model that is measuring to analyze attribute and characteristic of Mokpo port, and analyzes port selection by decision factors of shipper. This paper composed a questionnaire using the result of preceding research, to decide port selection factor among competitive ports. Through factor analysis on a basis of the questionnaire' result, five principal components were extracted. These are resorted out by Logit model, to grasp competitive elements of port. This research fin present direction which raises competitive power of ports in west coast of Korea, especially on alternative and concentration of middle-class port as Mokpo may be useful.

  • With the construction of the northern line of the East Sea in 2021, expectations for peaceful use of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) are rising. Accordingly, it is necessary to prepare for leisure tourism activities at nearby beaches using the Demilitarized Zone as a security ecological tourism. However, despite the increase in the amount of ultraviolet rays on the surface due to the destruction of the ozone layer, there are no guidelines for UV exposure. In this paper, the amount of ultraviolet reflection on the coast adjacent to the DMZ using remote exploration was measured and analyzed. It is hoped that the presented results will be used as basic data to prepare UV guidelines for leisure tourism activities in nearby areas.

  • The air temperatures of the coast and inland are rising due to an increase in carbon dioxide emissions and abnormal climate phenomena caused by global warming, El Nino, La Nina and so on. The sea levels of the Earth are rising by approximately 2.0 mm per year (global average value) due to the thermal expansion of sea water, melting of glaciers and other causes by global warming. On the other hand, when it comes to designing a hydraulic structure or coastal hydraulic structure, the standard of the design water level is decided by analyzing four largeness tide values and a harmonic constant with the observed tidal water level or simulating numerical model. Therefore, the design tidal water level needs to consider an increasing speed of the seawater level, which corresponds to the design frequency. In the present study, the observed tidal water levels targeting 46 tidal stations operated by the Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Administration (KHOA) from the beginning of observations to 2015 per hour were collected. The variation of the monthly and yearly and increasing ratio were performed and divided into 7 seas, such as east and west part of the Southern Sea, south part and middle of the East Sea, south part and middle of the Western Sea, and Jeju Sea. The current study could be used to determine the cause of local seawater rises and reflect the design tidal water level as basic data.

  • Jangbogo station is located in Terra Nova Bay over the East Antarctica, which is often affected by individual storms moving along nearby storm tracks and a katabatic flow from the continental interior towards the coast. A numerical simulation for two strong wind events of maximum instantaneous wind speed ($41.17m\;s^{-1}$) and daily mean wind speed ($23.92m\;s^{-1}$) at Jangbogo station are conducted using the polar-optimized version of Weather Research and Forecasting model (Polar WRF). Verifying model results from 3 km grid resolution simulation against AWS observation at Jangbogo station, the case of maximum instantaneous wind speed is relatively simulated well with high skill in wind with a bias of $-3.3m\;s^{-1}$ and standard deviation of $5.4m\;s^{-1}$. The case of maximum daily mean wind speed showed comparatively lower accuracy for the simulation of wind speed with a bias of -7.0 m/s and standard deviation of $8.6m\;s^{-1}$. From the analysis, it is revealed that the each case has different origins for strong wind. The highest maximum instantaneous wind case is caused by the approach of the strong synoptic low pressure system moving toward Terra Nova Bay from North and the other daily wind maximum speed case is mainly caused by the katabatic flow from the interiors of Terra Nova Bay towards the coast. Our evaluation suggests that the Polar WRF can be used as a useful dynamic downscaling tool for the simulation and investigation of high wind events at Jangbogo station. However, additional efforts in utilizing the high resolution terrain is required to reduce the simulation error of high wind mainly caused by katabatic flow, which is received a lot of influence of the surrounding terrain.

  • In this study, recent trends of the annual precipitation, the annual maximum precipitation of different durations and the rain days over several thresholds(i.e. 0, 10, 20, 40, 60 and 80 mm/day) according to the different local features were analyzed using daily precipitation data of 59 weather stations between 1973 and 2009. To analyze the variability according to the regional characteristics, 59 weather stations were classified by elevations, latitudes, longitudes, river basins, inland or shore(east sea, south sea, west sea) area and the level of urbanization. Results demonstrated that overall trend of variables increases except rain day. Results according to the regional characteristics showed that the increase trend becomes stronger with elevation increase. The increase trend of Han river basin is largest and that of Youngsan river basin is smallest. Also the increase trend becomes stronger with latitude increase and that of East coast is larger than that of South coast since it may be caused by the regional difference of elevation. The increase trend of urban area is larger than that of rural area. Overall trend showed that increase trend becomes stronger with elevation and latitude increase.

  • Realities of illegal fisheries in the central and southern coastal areas of the Yellow Sea were investigated. The study was based on the data released by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (MOMAF) and Korea Coast Guard (KCG) during 1992-2002 and on questionnaire responses. Analyses of KCG data showed that the number of enforcements by the agency gradually decreased during 1998-2001 but rose in 2002. Analyses of the MOMAF data, however, revealed that illegal fisheries gradually increased during 1992-1996, but sharply increased after 1997, and that such illegal activities became more common in the East Sea beginning in 2001. MOMAF data also showed that although illegal fisheries began to increase in the Yellow Sea after 1997 they tended to decrease in the southern sea after 1998, with a high rate of small-bull trawlers (40.9%) that were non-sanction fisheries (38.1%). Questionnaire responses showed that illegal fisheries were mainly motivated by poverty (27.4%) and largely occurred in coastal fisheries (78.0%). Analyses of questionnaire responses also suggested that illegal fishing activities can be reduced through tougher laws regulating fisheries.

  • To improve the fishing environment of Alaska pollack fishing ground of the East coast in Korea, lost fishing gear were recovered from June to July 1998, May 1999 and from July to August 1999 in the sea near Goseong, Gangwon province. The lost fishing gear was recovered by grapnel. As the results, the lost fishing gear, which was consist of gill nets and traps, was produced from fishing activities, whereas most of them was the bottom gill nets. The weight of lost fishing gears was gill nets of 1,170 t and traps off 4t. The recovered gill nets decreased 12.02 t per mile from 22.74 t, in 1998 to 10.72 t, in 1999. Recovery rate of lost fishing gear was low as 38% in 1998, 41.9% in 1999 and CPUE was 11.27 t/trial in 1998, 7.48 t/trial in 1999. The recovery of lost fishing gear in fishing ground by using grapnel was considered as a useful method.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the distribution pattern of macrobenthos in the subtidal sandy bottoms of the east coast of Korea, and seasonal samplings were performed from April 1993 to February 1994. The species number of macrobenthos was in the range from 70 in winter to 109 in spring season. Polychaete worms were the most dominant faunal group in species richness and abundance, but mollusks showed the highest biomass. The mean density of macrobenthos fluctuated from 631 individuals/m$^2$ in autumn to 1,995 individuals/m$^2$ in summer. The major macrofauna in abundance were polychaetes, Spiophanes bombyx which occurred all seasons with top rank and Prionospio sp. and a mollusk, Alvenius ojianus, and crustaceans, Wecomedon sp. and Urothoidae spp. were also numerically dominant macrobenthic fauna. The macrobenthos in the study area were classified into two assemblages by water depth. However, they showed a different community structure near small rivers in autumn and winter seasons.

  • Wave data acquired over eleven years near Sokcho Harbor located in the central area of the east coast were analyzed using spectral method and wave-by-wave analysis method and its major wave characteristics were examined. Significant wave heights were found to be high in winter and low in summer, and peak periods were also found to be long in winter and short in summer. The maximum significant wave height observed was 8.95 m caused by the East Sea twister. The distributional pattern of the significant wave heights and peak periods were both fitted better by Kernel distribution function than by Generalized Gamma distribution function and Generalized Extreme Value distribution function. The wave data were compiled to subdivide the wave height into intervals for each month, and the cumulative occurrence rates of wave heights were calculated to be utilized for the design and construction works in nearby construction works.
