  • Structural damage during an earthquake is caused by the response of the structure to the ground motion input at its base. The dynamic force produced in the structure are due to the inertia of its vibrating elements. The response of the structure exceeds the ground motion and this dynamic magnification depends on the duration and frequency content of the ground vibration, the soil properties at the site, distance from the epicenter and the dynamic characteristics of the structure. Earthquake load used in this study as a input data was artificially simulated with the design spectrum diagram in the Korean Earthquake Resistant Design Code. This paper presents the seismic analysis of the continuous preflex composite girder bridges according to variation of pier's height and span's length.

  • Recently continuous welded rail is generally used to ensure running performances and to overcome the problems such as structural vulnerability and fastener damage at the rail expansion joint. Though the use of continuous welded rail on bridge has the advantage of decreasing the vibration and damage of rail, it still the risk of buckling and breaking of rail due to change of temperature, starting and/or breaking force, axial stress concentration and so on. So, VIC code and many methods has been developed by researchers considering rail-bridge interaction. Although there are many research concerning stability of continuous welded rail about temperature change on bridge and starting and/or breaking force, the study of continuous welded mil for earthquake load is still unsufficient. In this study, the nonlinear seismic response analysis of continuous welded rail on bridge considering soil-structure interaction, geotechnical characteristic of foundation and earthquake isolation equipment has been performed to examine the stability of continuous welded rail.

  • In this study, effectiveness of seismic retrofitting methods using passive damping devices was investigated through numerical analyses of short-period structures under earthquakes which have short-duration and high-frequency impulse characteristics similar to Geyongju earthquakes. Displacement spectra of elastic systems and ductility demand of inelastic systems were evaluated by increasing viscous or friction damping. The damping devices could reduce responses of the structures with shorter structural period than 0.2s. The earthquakes similar to impulse load did not induce the responses of the structures with longer period than 0.4s, and the effects of the damping devices which generates damping forces proportional to structural responses became insignificant.

  • This study is the compared seismic performance that are difference between the performance of structures on various site classes and beam-column connection. this analysis model was designed the previous earthquake load. To compare the performance levels of the structure was subjected to nonlinear static and nonlinear dynamic analysis. Nonlinear analysis was used to The Perform 3D program. Nonlinear static analysis was compared with the performance point and Nonlinear dynamic analysis was compared the drift ratio(%). Analysis results, the soft site class of the displacement was more increase than rock site classes of the displacement. Also The smaller the displacement was increased beam-column connection stiffness.

  • The response of a plate-column system having five-degree-of-freedom supported by an elastic foundation and subjected to static lateral load, harmonic ground motion and earthquake motion is studied. Two Winkler foundation models are assumed: a conventional model which supports compression and tension and a tensionless model which supports compression only. The governing equations of the problem are obtained, solved numerically and the results are presented in figures to demonstrate the behavior of the system for various values of the system parameters comparatively for the conventional and the tensionless Winkler foundation models.

  • In the present paper a new Neuro-Wavelet control algorithm is proposed based on a cost function to actively control the vibrations of structures under earthquake loads. A wavelet neural network (WNN) was developed to train the control algorithm. This algorithm is designed to control multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) structures which consider the geometric and material non-linearity, structural irregularity, and the incident direction of an earthquake load. The training process of the algorithm was performed by using the El-Centro 1940 earthquake record. A numerical model of a three dimensional (3D) three story building was used to accredit the control algorithm under three different seismic loads. Displacement responses and hysteretic behavior of the structure before and after the application of the controller showed that the proposed strategy can be applied effectively to suppress the structural vibrations.

  • Experimental investigation was conducted into the flexure/shear-critical behavior of earthquake-damaged reinforced concrete columns with lap splicing of longitudinal reinforcement in the plastic hinge region. Six test specimens in the aspect ratio of 2.5 were made with test parameters: confinement ratios, lap splices, and retrofitting FRP materials. They were damaged under series of artificial earthquakes that could be compatible in Korean peninsula. Directly after the pseudo-dynamic test, damaged columns were retested under inelastic reversal cyclic loading simultaneously under a constant axial load, P = 0.1 $f_{ck}$ $A_{g}$. Residual seismic performance of damaged columns was evaluated and compared to that of the corresponding original columns. Test results show that RC bridge piers with lap-spliced longitudinal steels in the plastic hinge region appeared to fail at low ductility. This was due to the debonding of the lap splice, which resulted from insufficient development of the longitudinal steels. The specimens externally wrapped with composite FRP straps in the potential plastic hinge region indicated significant improvement both in flexural strength and displacement ductility.y.

  • The main concept of base isolation system is to reduce the member forces by decreasing the earthquake forces transmitted to superstructure instead of the conventional techniques of strengthening the structural members. There are two important advantages in friction pendulum systems. The functions of carrying the vertical load and of providing horizontal stiffness are effectively separated. This results in a more stable system that eliminates the need of a fail-safe mechanism. Friction pendulum systems are less sensitive to variations in the frequency content of ground excitation and tend to limit the intensity of the farce imparted to the superstructure. This study investigates the friction coefficients on the FPS test specimens according to the velocity, bearing pressure and test waveform.

  • Advances in geological studies, have identified increased seismic activity in the world's ocean once believed to be far from seismic hazards. The increase in demand of oil and other hydrocarbons leaves no option but to install a suitable offshore platform on these seismically sensitive offshore basins. Therefore, earthquake based design criteria for offshore structures are essential. The focus of the present review is on various computational techniques involved for seismic response study. The structural and load modeling approaches, the disturbed fluid-structure and soil-structure interaction as well as hydrodynamic damping due to earthquake excitation are also discussed. A brief description on the reliability-based seismic design approach is also presented.
