Seismic damage assessment program for containment structure is developed. The program has been established through the combination of inelastic seismic analysis program and 3-D animation program. Damage indices at finite element level and structural level have been introduced for the seismic damage assessment. The seismic damage assessment program makes it possible to analyze in real-time the actual resistance capacity and damage level of containment structure. It will be expected that the program enables to establish the measures more quickly under the earthquake event.

The Ministry of the Interior and Safety in Korea developed seismic fragility function for various building types in 2009. Damage states for most building types were determined by structural analyses of sample models and foreign references because actual cases damaged by earthquakes rarely exist in Korea. Low-rise, piloti-type buildings showed severe damage by brittle failure in columns due to insufficient stirrup details in the 2017 Pohang earthquake. Therefore, it is necessary to improve damage state criteria for piloti-type buildings by consulting actual outcomes from the earthquake. An analytical approach was conducted by developing analysis models of sample buildings reflecting insufficient stirrup details of columns to accomplish the purpose. The result showed that current spectral displacements of damage states for piloti-type buildings might be too large to estimate actual fragility. When the brittle behavior observed in the earthquake is reflected in the analysis model, one-fourth through one-sixth of current spectral displacements of damage states may be appropriate for existing low-rise, piloti-type buildings.

This study introduces the fragility analysis method for the safety evaluation of reinforced concrete pier subject to earthquake. Damage probability is calculated instead of the failure probability from definition of the damage state in the fragility curve. Not only the damage model determined by the response of structure subject to earthquake, but also the plastic-damage model which can represent the local damage is applied to fragility analysis. The evaluation method of damage state by damage variable in global structure is defined by this procedure. This study introduces the fragility analysis method considering the features of nonlinear time history behavior of reinforced concrete element and the plastic behavior of materials. At last, This study gives one of the approach method for seismic margin evaluation with the result of fragility analysis to design seismic load.
Structures subjected to strong seismic excitation may undergo inelastic deformation cycles. The resulting cumulative fatigue damage process reduces the ability of structures and components to withstand seismic loads. Yet, the present earthquake resistance design methods focus mainly on the maximum displacement ductility, ignoring the effect of the cyclic responses. The damage parameters closely related to the cumulative damage need to be properly reflected on the aseismic design methods. In this study, two cumulative damage assessment methods derived from the plastic fatigue theory are investigated. The one is based on the hysteretic ductility amplitude, and the other is based on the dissipated hysteretic energy. Both methods can consider the maximum ductility and the cyclic behavior of structural response. The validity of two damage methods has been examined for single degree of freedom structures with various natural frequencies against two different earthquake excitations.

This study presents an ensemble learning based Bayesian model updating approach for structural damage diagnosis. In the developed framework, the structure is initially decomposed into a set of substructures. The autoregressive moving average (ARMAX) model is established first for structural damage localization based structural motion equation. The wavelet packet decomposition is utilized to extract the damage-sensitive node energy in different frequency bands for constructing structural surrogate models. Four methods, including Kriging predictor (KRG), radial basis function neural network (RBFNN), support vector regression (SVR), and multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS), are selected as candidate structural surrogate models. These models are then resampled by bootstrapping and combined to obtain an ensemble model by probabilistic ensemble. Meanwhile, the maximum entropy principal is adopted to search for new design points for sample space updating, yielding a more robust ensemble model. Through the iterations, a framework of surrogate ensemble learning based model updating with high model construction efficiency and accuracy is proposed. The specificities of the method are discussed and investigated in a case study.

The Hyogoken-Nambu Earthquake of January 17, 1995 inflicted severe damage in the Hanshin and Awaji areas such as has never been seen in Japan in recent years. The safety inspections of the dams conducted in the area by site offices and dam experts immediately after the earthquake showed that there was no damage affecting the safety of the dams although slight damage was observed in several dams. The investigation also revealed that the peak accelerations at dam sites were much smaller than those at soil sites. The Ministry of construction organized the Committee on Evaluattion of Earthquake Resistance of Dams after the earthquake. The Committee confirmed through dynamic analysis that the dams designed in accordance with the present design criteria in Japan are safe under the magnitude of shaking that occurred close the source fault of the Hyogoken-Nambu Earthquake.
Modelling and analysis of a brick masonry building involves uncertainties like modelling assumptions and properties of local material. Therefore, it is necessary to perform a calibration to evaluate the dynamic properties of the structure. The response of the finite element model is improved by predicting the parameter by performing linear dynamic analysis on experimental data by comparing the acceleration. Further, a nonlinear dynamic analysis was also performed comparing the roof acceleration and damage pattern of the structure obtained analytically with the test findings. The roof accelerations obtained analytically were in good agreement with experimental roof accelerations. The damage patterns observed analytically after every shock were almost similar to that of experimental observations. Damage pattern with amplification in roof acceleration exhibit the potentiality of earthquake resistant measures in brick masonry models.

The resent earthquakes in worldwide have caused extensive damage to highway reinforced concrete bridge piers. It has been observed in the Korean Peninsula that the number of minor or low earthquake motions have increased year by year. Since the concern about the earthquake hazards is increased, the objective of this research is to evaluate the damage of reinforced concrete bridge piers subjected to probable earthquake motions. Experimental investigation was conducted to study the seismic performance of the full-scale specimens in size D=1.2m H=4.8m, which were constructed with different longitudinal lap splice and loading pattern, through the quasi-static test and the pseudo-dynamic test. It is thought that this result could contribute to establish the retrofit decision-making and disaster planning of reinforced concrete bridge piers in earthquake regions. And it could be also possible to quantify the damage of reinforced concrete bridge piers under cyclic loading

In this paper described is the basic concept of the Guideline for Post-earthquake Damage Assessment of RC buildings, revised in 2001, in Japan. This paper discusses the damage rating procedures based on the residual seismic capacity index R, the ratio of residual seismic capacity to the original capacity, that is consistent with the Japanese Standard for Seismic Evaluation of Existing RC Buildings, and their validity through calibration with observed damage due to the 1995 Hyogoken-Nambu (Kobe) earthquake. Good agreement between the residual seismic capacity ratio and damage levels was observed.

Korea is located away from plate boundaries which are not safe from earthquakes. However, having witnessed the large-scale earthquake in the Tangshan region in 1976 deemed as a safe plate, it should not be assured that Korea is absolutely safe from earthquakes. In addition, many seismologists have claimed that there indeed is a high possibility of earthquakes above mid scale that would occur in Korea. Because it is impossible to prevent earthquake, studies on seismic design and earthquake disaster control system are widely being conducted. However, studies on early response to earthquakes or recovery process are still very limited, and only a few studies for establishing earthquake damage evaluation system are being conducted. Thus, this study aimed to present essential data for establishing earthquake damage evaluation system that takes into account the real situation of structures in Korea. In this study, a nonseimically reinforced concrete apartment structure in Gangnamgu was selected as an standard type of such structures and its earthquake damage was estimated. The result of damage evaluation based on the derivation of vulnerability function and realtive story displacement was compared to that abtained using HAZUS Program Vulnerability Function.
