  • Strong and coherent radar backscattering signals are observed over oyster sea farms that consist of artificial structures installed on the bottom. We successfully obtained 21 coherent interferograms from 11 JERS-1 SAR data sets even though orbital baselines (up to 2 km) or temporal baselines (up to 1 year) were relatively large. The coherent phases preserved in the sea farms are probably formed by double bouncing from sea surface and the sea farming structures, and consequently they are correlated with tide height (or instantaneous sea level). Phase unwrapping is required to restore the absolute sea level. We show that radar backscattering intensity is roughly correlated with the sea surface height, and utilize the fact to determine the wrapping counts. While the SAR image intensity gives a rough range of absolute sea level, the interferometric phases provide the detailed relative height variations within a limit of $2{\pi}$ (or 15.3 cm) with respect to the sea level at the moment of the master data acquisition. A combined estimation results in an instantaneous sea level. The radar measurements were verified using tide gauge records, and the results yielded a correlation coefficient of 0.96 with an r.m.s. error of 6.0 cm. The results demonstrate that radar interferometry is a promising approach to sea level measurement in the near coastal regions.

  • Acquisition of thermoremanent magnetization follows a Boltzman statistics, as such long reaction time in a slowly cooled environment allows more chance to align individual magnetic particles parallel to the external magnetic field. Hence it has been proposed that the slowly cooled rocks often acquire stronger magnetization than the rapidly cooled ones. Such a proposition has been experimentally validated to be true for the fine-grained magnetite- or titanomagnetite bearing basaltic rocks collected from the mid-ocean ridges. However, the effect of cooling-rate on the remanence intensity appears to be insignificant for nominal grain ranges.

  • Rapid development of geophysical exploration and hydrogeologic monitoring techniques has yielded remarkable increase of datasets related to groundwater systems. Increased number of datasets contribute to understanding of general aquifer characteristics such as groundwater yield and flow, but understanding of complex heterogenous aquifers system is still a challenging task. Recently, applications of data science technique have become popular in the fields of geophysical explorations and monitoring, and such attempts are also extended in the groundwater field. This work reviewed current status and advancement in utilization of data science in groundwater field. The application of data science techniques facilitates effective and realistic analyses of aquifer system, and allows accurate prediction of aquifer system change in response to extreme climate events. Due to such benefits, data science techniques have become an effective tool to establish more sustainable groundwater management systems. It is expected that the techniques will further strengthen the theoretical framework in groundwater management to cope with upcoming challenges and limitations.

  • The purpose of this study is to ensure microseismic data acquisition technique for hydraulic fracturing imaging at the site of shale gas development. For this, microseismic data acquisition was performed during hydraulic fracturing and artificial blasting at a site bearing shale layers. Measured microseismic event data during the hydraulic fracturing have the very small amplitude of 0.001 mm/sec ~ 0.003 mm/sec and the frequency contents of 5 Hz ~ 20 Hz range. Meanwhile microseismic event data acquired during artificial blasting have the bigger amplitude (0.011 mm/sec ~ 0.302 mm/sec) than hydraulic fracturing event data and their frequency contents have the range of 5 Hz ~ 2 kHz. For microseismic data acquisition design, the selection of appropriate instrumentation including sensors and the recording system, the determination of sensor array and the deployment range were investigated based on the theoretical data and field application experiences.

  • Since aerosols adversely affect human health, such as deteriorating air quality, quantitative observation of the distribution and characteristics of aerosols is essential. Recently, satellite-based Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) data is used in various studies as periodic and quantitative information acquisition means on the global scale, but optical sensor-based satellite AOD images are missing in some areas with cloud conditions. In this study, we produced gap-free GeoKompsat 2A (GK-2A) Advanced Meteorological Imager (AMI) AOD hourly images after generating a Random Forest based gap-filling model using grid meteorological and geographic elements as input variables. The accuracy of the model is Mean Bias Error (MBE) of -0.002 and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of 0.145, which is higher than the target accuracy of the original data and considering that the target object is an atmospheric variable with Correlation Coefficient (CC) of 0.714, it is a model with sufficient explanatory power. The high temporal resolution of geostationary satellites is suitable for diurnal variation observation and is an important model for other research such as input for atmospheric correction, estimation of ground PM, analysis of small fires or pollutants.

  • In this study, the performance characteristics of solid phase microextraction (SPME) were investigated for three major odorous groups that consist of 10 individual compounds ([1] volatile organic compounds (VOC): benzene, toluene, p-xylene and styrene, [2] reduced sulfur compounds (RSC): hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercaptan, dimethylsulfide (DMS), dimethyldisulfide (DMDS), and carbon disulfide, and [3] amine: trimethylamine (TMA)). For the purpose of a comparative analysis, two types of SPME fiber ([1] polidimethylsiloxane/divinilbenzene (P/D) and [2] $Carboxen^{TM}$/polidimethylsiloxane (C/P)) were test ε d against each other for a series of standards prepared at different concentration levels (100, 200, and 500 ppb). To compare the analytical performance of each fiber, all standards were analyzed for the acquisition of calibration data sets for each compound. The results of P/D fiber generally showed that its calibration slope increased as a function of molecular weight across different VOCs; however, those of C/P fiber showed a fairly reversed trend. Besides, we confirmed that the application of SPME is limited to many sulfur compounds; only two compounds (DMS and DMDS) are sensitive enough to draw calibration results out of SPME. The calibration data for RSC show generally enhanced slop values for C/P relative to P/D fiber. However, in the case of TMA, we were not able to find a notable difference in their performance.

  • Paleomagnetic and rock-magnetic data have been obtained from the Cretaceous rocks (Yeongdong Group, volcanic rock, and intrusive rocks) which are exposed in the Yeongdong Basin. The characteristic remanent directions of these rocks, which are mainly carried by magnetite and hematite of single and pseudo-single domain sizes, are normally magnetized (Yeongdong Group: $D/I=29.6/59.0^{\circ}C$, k=75.7, ${\alpha}_{95}=3.3^{\circ}$, N=25 sites, paleopole at $198.0^{\circ}E$, $66.4^{\circ}N$, K=46.1, $A_{95}=4.3^{\circ}$; volcanic rock: $D/I=352.8/44.1^{\circ}$, k=44.2, ${\alpha}_{95}=18.8^{\circ}$, N=3 sites, paleopole at $340.0^{\circ}E$, $78.8^{\circ}N$, $K=49.8^{\circ}E$, $A_{95}=17.6^{\circ}$X>; intrusive rocks: $D/I=358.4/51.9^{\circ}C$, k=20.0, ${\alpha}_{95}=13.8^{\circ}$, N=7 sites, paleopole at $338.1^{\circ}E$, $86.8^{\circ}N$, K=13.5, $A_{95}=17.1^{\circ}$). The stepwise unfolding of the characteristic remanent magnetization (ChRM) of the Yeongdong Group reveals that a maximum value of k is observed at 60% of unfolding with $D/I=13.0/58.6^{\circ}$ (k=124.62, ${\alpha}_{95}2.6^{\circ}$) indicating that the ChRM was aquired during ti1ting of the strata. This remagnetized ChRM in the sedimentary strata is due to acquisition of geomagnetic field direction at the time of formation of authigenic magnetic minerals, although it is not totally ruled out that the formation of authigenic magnetic minerals was affected indirect1y by the elevated temperature originated from the volcanic and intrusive rocks which intruded between Late Cretaceous and Early Tertiary.

  • The holistic inversion approach for frequency domain airborne electromagnetic data has previously been employed to simultaneously calibrate, process and invert raw frequency-domain data where prior information was available. Analternative formulation has been developed, which is suitable in the case where explicit prior information is not available. It incorporates: a multi-layer vertically-smooth conductivity model; a simplified bias parameterisation; horizontal smoothing with respect to elevation; and cluster computer parallelisation. Without using any prior data, an inversion of 8.0 million data for 3.4 million parameters yields results that are consistent with independently derived calibration parameters, downhole logs and groundwater elevation data. We conclude that the success of the holistic inversion method is not dependent on a sophisticated conceptual model or the direct inclusion of survey-area specific prior information. In addition, acquisition costs could potentially be reduced by employing the holistic approach which largely eliminates the need for high altitude zero-level measurements.

  • Acquisition of precise position and velocity information of GNSS-INS (Global Navigation Satellite System; Inertial Navigation System) sensors in obtaining SAR SLC (Single Look Complex) images from raw data using BPA (Backprojection Algorithm) was regarded decisive. Several studies on BPA were accompanied by Kalman Filter for sensor noise oppression, but often implemented once where insufficient information was given to determine whether the filtering was effectively applied. Multiple operation of Kalman Filter on GNSS-INS sensor was presented in order to assess the effective order of sensor noise calibration. FMCW (Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave)-SAR raw data was collected from twice airborne experiments whose GNSS-INS information was practically and repeatedly filtered via Kalman Filter. It was driven that the FMCW-SAR raw data with diverse path information could derive different order of Kalman Filter with optimum operation of BPA image restoration.

  • Utilizing weather independent SAR images along with machine learning based object detector is effective in robust vessel monitoring. While conventional SAR images often applied amplitude data from Single Look Complex, exploitation of polarimetric parameters acquired from multiple polarimetric SAR images was yet to be implemented to vessel detection utilizing machine learning. Hence, this study used four polarimetric parameters (H, p1, DoP, DPRVI) retrieved from eigen-decomposition and two backscattering coefficients (γ0, VV, γ0, VH) from radiometric calibration; six bands in total were respectively exploited from 52 Sentinel-1 SAR images, accompanied by vessel training data extracted from AIS information which corresponds to acquisition time span of the SAR image. Evaluating different cases of combination, the use of polarimetric indexes along with amplitude values derived enhanced vessel detection performances than that of utilizing amplitude values exclusively.
