  • The use of strut preloading method is gradually increasing in braced excavations in Korea. And it is necessary to analyse the effects of strut preloading on the wall deflection, bending moment and strut axial force etc. In this study, by using the analysis method of beams on elasto-plastic foundations, parametric studies of correlation between preloading and earth retaining structures in sandy soils were peformed in strut preloading application. As results, about 50% of design strut load was effective as a preloading force in considering the displacement and member forces of structures. And at least the effective stiffness of strut should be over 25% of the ideal value in order to restrain the excessive increase of wall deflection and bending moments. In order to protect excessive movements in braced excavation, to preload the strut was rather effective way than to increase the stiffness of strut and braced wall, but the excessive axial force of strut should be checked simultaneously.

  • The application of mechanically stabilized earth wall(MSEW) with segmental front panel has been increasing in highway construction due to its cost-effectiveness. However, some failures during construction have been reported and many field engineers are reluctant to select this method for important structure. One of the main reasons may be that there is no moderate specification for design and construction of MSEW yet. This paper discussed the main results of analysis on a case of block-type segmental retaining wall in highway construction. Based on the results, some recommendations on design and construction method of MSEW are presented.

  • The advantages of precast production are fast construction, reduction of labor and insurance of good quality. In recently, the application of the precast production is increased in the earth retaining wall field. This paper presents the results of the numerical modelling that was carried out to evaluate the stability of precast and prestressed earth retaining wall under dynamic train loading. The two-dimensional explicit dynamic finite element method (ABAQUS) was used to carry out the numerical analyses. The train loading to act track is calculated by using the real measured phase angle data. Mainly, the displacement and acceleration of wall structure in time domain analyzed to evaluate the stability under the dynamic train load.

  • The precast production has many advantages by fast construction period, labor-saving and high quality. In recent years, the application of the precast product has been increased in the earth retaining wall field. This paper presents the results of the numerical analysis that was carried out to evaluate the dynamic stability of precast and prestressed earth retaining wall under moving train load. The two-dimensional FEM analysis was used to the numerical analyses. The train load to act on trackbed is combined by the real measured roughness phase angle and quasi-static load. The dynamic stability is analysed by the displacement, acceleration and stress under moving train load at each specified location. The results of the analysis show that the precast and prestressed retaining wall has very stable capability for the railway.

  • It's essential to build an earth retaining structure at the beginning and end point of a tunnel constructed in a colluvium area. A large scale of colluvial soil may cause a problem to the stability of the excavation ground. An excavation in colluvium has different behavior characteristics from those in a sandy soil due to unstable elements and needs counter measures for it. There are few systematic research efforts on the behavior characteristics of an earth retaining structure installed in colluvial soil. Thus this study set out to collect measuring data from an excavation site at the tunnel pit mouth in colluvium and set quantitative criteria for the safety of an earth retaining structure. After comparing and analyzing the theoretical and empirical earth pressure from the measuring data, the lateral earth pressure distribution acted on the earth retaining wall was suggested.

  • The temporary support system in Korea have been carried out generally along with installing supports, which are struts, anchors, rakers. However, most of existing support systems in application relatively have limitations such as cost increase, construction configuration, and displacement occurred with support systems. Thus, a new retaining support system(referred to as the SSR, NET No.533) was developed to solve the aforementioned problems. This study introduces the design, construction, and maintenance of the SSR system under the different construction conditions. The behavior and characteristics of the SSR system were identified based on the case studies.

  • In this study, experiments were carried out after fabricating and installing a physical model considering the size of the prototype. In the model test, the number of struts placed on the wall and the applied acceleration were selected as test variables. Two different types of waves, long-period and short-period, were applied with magnitudes of 0.05g, 0.1g, 0.2g, and 0.3g. Measured are displacements at specified points. As a result of the analysis, displacement exceeding the allowable displacement of the wall occurred at an acceleration greater than 0.05g to 0.1g depending on the seismic waves applied. Therefore guidelines have to be established through further studies for aseismic design of earth retaining walls.

  • In the revised 2019 Guidelines for Facility Safety and Maintenance, the existing safety-oriented facility evaluations have expanded from performance evaluations to added durability and serviceability. This expansion reflects the life cycle of facilities and the service abilities of facilities, which are becoming a global issue. However, since the performance evaluation of facilities is linked to repairing and reinforcement, the related researches such as the correlation of each performance and the target performance related to the decision on priority are necessary. In this study, through the analysis of historical data of existing facility safety evaluation results centered on the retaining earth wall installed in domestic road facilities, the appropriate target performance was suggested for the maintenance of the facility based on the revised performance evaluation. Also, the performances on the actual two retaining walls were evaluated for example and analyzed the verification of the target performance. Besides, new indicators were presented to add serviceability to the performance evaluation of retaining earth walls consisting of safety and durability.

  • In this study, the numerical analyses regarding the distance between the guardrail and the reinforced earth wall as parameter were performed to determine the safe distance of guardrail installed on reinforced earth wall from the reinforced earth wall. The analyses were fulfilled by increasing the distance between the guardrail and reinforced earth wall from 150mm to 750mm. The computer program used in this research is LS-DYNA, which is very' popular in analysis of vehicle collision. Ford single unit truck in NCAC was employed as the model of vehicle and the velocity of vehicle collision was 80km/hr. As a results of analyses, the safety of guardrail was secured regardless of the distance between the guardrail and block of reinforced earth wall. However, to secure the safety of block of reinforced earth wall the distance between the guardrail and block of reinforced earth wall should be over 600mm.

  • This study was intended to suggest a new-concept construction method of permanent basement wall combined with earth retaining wall by using PHC piles to overcome the disadvantages of conventional CIP methods or the like which have been used just for earth retaining walls during field construction, and to determine its applicability. PHC piles are characterized by the reliable quality attributed to prefabrication (shop fabrication) as well as superior concrete strength and prestressing steel strength to that of CIP in the aspect of materials, and also higher bending moment than that of CIP in the aspect of structure.
