  • Heat manipulation at early age has been known to help chickens cope with heat stress later in life. The present study was conducted to determine the effects of early heat conditioning at 5 days of age on performance in broilers when re-exposed to heat stress later in life. Day-old, 256 Arbor Acre boiler chicks were housed in two identical rooms where all broilers were exposed to a 23-h light: 1-h dark cycle throughout the study and provided with feed and water ad libitum. At the age of 5 days, one group was exposed to $37^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours and then returned to the temperature at which control birds were maintained (early heat condition group) while the other was maintained without heat modulation (Control). On 21 days, broilers were regrouped into 4 groups (CON+CON: control+control; CON+HS: control+heat stress; HC+CON: heat conditioning+control; HC+HS: heat conditioning+heat stress), and given 7 days for adaptation. On 28 days, birds in one room were exposed to heat stress ($21^{\circ}C{\rightarrow}31^{\circ}C$) for 3 days whereas those in the other were at room temperature. Heat stress resulted in decreased feed intake, water intake, and body weight gain (P<0.05), but increased rectal temperature and mortality (P<0.05). No beneficial effects of heat conditioning were detected when broilers were exposed to heat stress again at later in life. The present results were discussed together with other studies regarding possible differences in methods such as ages of breeders and strains, which may have resulted in the failure of heat conditioning to help broilers resist heat stress.

  • Thermal cracks ard occured when thermal stress due to the hydration of cement exceeds the tensile strength of concrete. Since cracking causes poor durability of concrete, the effect of thermal cracking should be included for the desing and construction of massive concrete structures. In this study, an experiments are performed for the investigation of time dependent temperature and thermal stress of massive concrete structure at early ages. In order to measure temperatures and thermal stresses, concrete stress meter, embedded strain meter, non-stress meter, and thermocouples are used. Based on the analyses of measured thermal stress data, measured values by concrete stress meter are more reliable than those by embedded strain meter and non-stress meter, And measured values by concrete stress meter are compared with the calculated values by FEM program developed by DICT (DWTS2D). Calculated values by DWTS2D show good agreement with measured values.

  • The purpose of this study is the extent of the stress of the nursing students during the period of delivery room practice, according to whether they have their practical experience and in which situations they received. The subject of this study is 62 nursing students (who experienced delivery room pracice at an early stage) in Kang Weon C. Junior College of nursing and 62 nursing students(who experienced delivery room practice at a latter stage) in J.Junior college of Nursing (total 124 students) from March 1988 to December 1988. The results of this study are summerized as follows. 1. According to the general characteristics, it revealed that they have not any relations between the religion, the numbers of family, health status and the extent of stress during the nursing students have experienced in the delivery room practice(p>.05). 2. It revealed that there were much differences to the extent of stress they have experienced during the delivery room practice between the nursing students(who experienced delivery room practice at an early stage) in C.Junior College of Nursing and nursing students(who experienced delivery room practice at a latter stage) in J. Junior College of Nursing(p<.000). 3. In ten items of the stress that was confronted by nursing practice, they had much differences to the extent of stress perception for the students during the period of delivery room practice between each college(p<.05). 4. In the four parts of the clinical practice except for adult nursing practice, they had much differences to the extent of stress according to whether they have their practical experience. However the stress which they experienced in the adult ward during the period of delivery of delivery room nursing practice is too low to be significant(p<.05).

  • This study examined the relationships between parenting stress, parenting sense of competence, and parenting behavior in Korean and Japanese mothers of early school-aged children. A sample of 166 Korean mothers and 112 Japanese mothers completed questionnaires. First, in terms of results, Korean mothers reported higher scores in parenting stress, parenting sense of competence, and warmth and neglect than Japanese mothers did. In contrast, Japanese mothers scored higher on intrusiveness than Korean mothers. Second, for both groups, parenting stress was negatively related to warmth and reasoning, and positively related to intrusiveness, coercion, and neglect. Third, for both groups, parenting sense of competence was positively linked to warmth and reasoning, and negatively linked to intrusiveness, coercion, and neglect. Fourth, parenting stress was negatively associated with parenting sense of competence for both groups. Finally, parenting sense of competence mediated the associations between parenting stress and warmth for both groups. Only in the case of Korean mothers did parenting stress influence reasoning and intrusiveness through parenting sense of competence. These results imply that there may indeed be cross-cultural similarities and differences in three parenting-related variables between Korean and Japanese mothers.

  • The Alu element, the most abundant transposable element, is transcribed to Alu RNA. We hypothesized that the PIWI protein regulates the expression of Alu RNA in retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells, where accumulated Alu RNA leads to macular degeneration. Alu transcription was induced in RPE cells treated with $H_2O_2$. At an early stage of oxidative stress, PIWIL4 was translocated into the nucleus; however, subsequently it was sequestered into cytoplasmic stress granules, resulting in the accumulation of Alu RNA. An elevated amount of Alu RNA was positively correlated with the disruption of the epithelial features of RPE via induction of mesenchymal transition. Therefore, we suggest that oxidative stress causes Alu RNA accumulation via PIWIL4 sequestration into the cytoplasmic stress granules.

  • In this study, CT specimens were prepared from spring steel(SUP9) processed shot peening which was room temperature, low temperature and high temperature experiment. And we got the following characteristics from fatigue crack growth test carried out in the environment of room, low temperature and high temperature at $25^{\circ}C$,$-30^{\circ}C$,$-50^{\circ}C$,$-70^{\circ}C$ and $-100^{\circ}C$ in the range of stress ratio of 0.05 by means of opening mode displacement. The threshold stress intensity factor range $\Delta K_{th}$ in the early stage of fatigue crack growth (Region I ) and stress intensity factor range $\Delta K$ in the stable of fatigue crack growth (Region II) was decreased in proportion to descend temperature. It assumed that the fatigue resistance characteristics and fracture strength at low temperature and high temperature is considerable higher than that of room temperature in the early stage and stable of fatigue crack growth region.

  • We previously pointed out that the polluted sediment elutriate manifestly affected the early events of reproductive outputs in the Pacific oysters, Crassostrea gigas. A serial dilution of priority xenobiotic sediment elutriates determined by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) were exposed to gametes of the oyster with different stress burdens to detail the maternal stress transfer to its reproductive outputs. There was an apparent critical concentration over which survival and morphogenesis were significantly affected with more profound damage in morphogenesis. The critical concentration which drives mortality and abnormal morphogenesis of the larvae corresponded to a dilution between 10 and 20% of our elutriate. The adverse effects of the early lives by the xenobiotic exposure over the critical concentration were magnified by the maternal stress from the exposed benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), one of the priority polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) during the maturation condition. These results indicate that maternal transfer of the xenobiotic compounds from oysters living in the contaminated location might represent a significant adverse effect to their larval population of wild seeds.

  • The risk of transverse cracking in concrete decks of composite bridges is affected by many factors related to the bridge design, materials, and construction. Among others, the thermal and shrinkage stresses are the most important factors that affect the transverse cracking in early-age concrete decks. The thermal stress at the concrete deck is mainly affected by both ambient temperature and solar radiation. The shrinkage stress at the general strength concrete deck is mainly affected by drying shrinkage and the high strength concrete deck is mainly affected by autogeneous shrinkage. Three-dimensional finite element models of composite bridges were made to investigate the stress due to thermal and shrinkage stress.

  • To gain a better understanding of the methylation imprinting changes associated with heat stress in early development, we used bisulfite sequencing and bisulfite restriction analysis to examine the DNA methylation status of imprinted genes in early embryos (blastocysts). The paternal imprinted genes, H19 and Igf-2r, had lower methylation levels in heat-stressed embryos than in control embryos, whereas the maternal imprinted genes, Peg3 and Peg1, had similar methylation pattern in heat-stressed embryos and in control embryos. Our results indicate that heat stress may induce aberrant methylation imprinting, which results in developmental failure of mouse embryos, and that the effects of heat shock on methylation imprinting may be gene-specific.
