Development of Titanium Dioxide (TiO2)-immobilized Buoyant Photocatalyst Balls Using Expanded Polystyrene (EPS)

  • A new immobilization technique of nanoscale $TiO_2$ powder to expanded polystyrene (EPS) balls with temperature-controlled melting method was developed, and the photocatalytic activity of $TiO_2$ powder-embedded EPS balls were evaluated using methylene blue (MB) solution under ultraviolet irradiation (${\lambda}=254nm$). Based on the scanning electron microscope (SEM) images and associated energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analysis, the components of the intact EPS balls were mainly carbon and oxygen, whereas those of $TiO_2$-immobilized EPS balls were carbon, oxygen, and titanium, indicating that relatively homogenous patches of $TiO_2$ and glycerin film were coated on the surface of EPS balls. Based on the comparison of degradation efficiencies of MB between intact and $TiO_2$-immobilized EPS balls under UVC illumination, the degradation efficiencies of MB can be significantly improved using $TiO_2$-immobilized EPS balls, and surface reactions in heterogeneous photocatalysis were more dominant than photo-induced radical reactions in aqueous solutions. Thus, $TiO_2$-immobilized EPS balls were found to be an effective photocatalyst for photodegradation of organic compounds in aqueous solutions without further processes (i.e., separation, recycling, and regeneration of $TiO_2$ powder). Further study is in progress to evaluate the feasibility for usage of buoyant $TiO_2$-immobilized EPS to inhibit the excessive growth of algae in rivers and lakes.

Study on Photodegradable Water-Soluble Compounds of Expanded Polystyrene

  • Many previous studies have focused on revealing the harmfulness of microplastic particles, whereas very few studies have focused on the effects of chemicals, particularly photooxidation product. In this study, products of photodegradation from expanded polystyrene (EPS), compounds produced by photolysis by ultraviolet (UV) light, were investigated. EPS was directly irradiated and photolyzed using a UV lamp, and then the extracted sample was analyzed using high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS). Multiple ionization techniques, including electrospray ionization, atmospheric pressure chemical ionization, and atmospheric pressure photoionization, were used. In total, >300 compounds were observed, among which polystyrene monomer, dimer, and oxidized products were observed. In this work, the data presented clearly demonstrate that it is necessary to identify and monitor oxidized plastic compounds and assess their effect on the environment.

Expanded Polystyrene Box로 포장한 후지 사과의 신선도 (Freshness Extension of 'Fuji' Apple Packed with Expanded Polystyrene Form Box)

  • 개발한 EPS 포장상자가 사과의 신선도 유지효과 기능이 있는지의 여부를 조사코자 사과를 포장하여 $20^{\circ}C$ 저장하면서 골판지상자와 0.02와 0.04mm 두께의 LDPE 필름, 기능성 MA필름과 50배로 발포시킨 EPS상자에 사과를 15kg씩 포장하여 포장재간의 신선도 유지효과를 비교하였다. 저장 40일 후 중량감소는 대조구는 5.7%, EPS 상자는 0.5%의 중량감소가 나타났고, 비타민C도 2.06과 2.31 mg%로 EPS 포장구가 높게 유지되고 있었다. 당도와 산도는 포장구간에 큰 차이가 없었으며 부패의 경우 대조구는 상자당 3-5개과가 발생했으나 EPS포장구는 발생하지 않았으며 외관도 양호한 것으로 나타났다.

파쇄된 발포폴리스티렌을 이용한 경량혼합토의 다짐특성 (Compaction Propertiesof Light Weight Soil Mixtures Using Crushed Expanded Polystyrene)

  • Use of soils with crushed expanded polystyrene(EPS) satisfied both recycling of industrial waste and development of new light-weight fill materials. Objectives of the study were to make the mixed the mixed soils with the crushed EPS and to suggest the most rational mixing ration as a fill material. A series of laboratory tests was performed to investigate the relationship between miximum dry density and optimum moisture contenr and to find the variation of CBR for mixtures with 3 soils and 2 sizes of the crushed EPS. Results of the test showed that the sizes fo the curshed EPS had a little effect on the properties of mixed soils. But gradatiion of soils and mixing ration with the crushed EPS were important factors to characterize compaction properties of the mixed soils.

준설토와 EPS를 혼합한 경량혼합처리토의 강도 특성 (Strength Characteristics of Light-Weighted Soils Mixed with EPS and Dredged Soils)

  • Recycling of dredged soils as construction materials is experimently discussed in this paper. The strength of light-weighted soils(LWS) consisting of expanded polystyrene(EPS), dredged soils and cement is characterized by uniaxial and triaxial compression tests with varying initial water contents of dredged soils, the EPS volume and cement contents, and expanded ratio of EPS. Test results show that the strength of light-weighted soils increases with adding cement contents, whereas the strength increases with decreasing initial water contents of dredged soils and expanded ratio of EPS. It was, however, found that increasing the EPS volume makes a lower the strength of light-weighted soils.

Inhibition of the Algal Growth using TiO2-embedded Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) balls in Lab-scale Outdoor Experiment

  • $TiO_2$-embedded expanded polystyrene (TiEPS) balls with powdered $TiO_2$ particles embedded on the surface of EPS were developed, and the growth inhibition of Chlorella ellipsoidea, a green algae, was evaluated. The experiment was conducted using four reactors with various conditions of (A) natural sunlight, (B) natural sunlight + TiEPS balls, (C) dark, and (D) dark + TiEPS balls on the roof of the building during five days. Based on the analysis of cell number, cell morphology, concentrations of chlorophyll-a and phaeopigments, both surface reactions in heterogeneous photocatalysis and light shielding could inhibit the growth of C. ellipsoidea. The highly reactive hydroxyl radicals ($OH{\cdot}$) from TiEPS balls degraded the lipid cell membrane through the peroxidation reaction with the light shielding, eventually resulting in cell inactivation. Although dominant inhibitory effects on the growth of C. ellipsoidea were ambiguous, TiEPS balls were feasible to prevent and inhibit the excessive growth of algae in eutrophic water body.

유한요소법을 이용한 모니터의 완충 포장재 설계에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Cushion Package Design of a Monitor using Finite Element Method)

  • The reduction of the cushion material such as Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) is one of the urgent tasks of the package design process in home electrical appliances considering environmental protection. EPS reduction often causes the structural damage of products, which must be protected in the environment of transportation. CAE simulation can help the efficient package design with low material cost. The mechanical drop simulation of packaged product was performed with commercial FEM code and Taguchi approach was used partially to determine the dominant design parameters. As results of this study, about 20% reduction of EPS was accomplished in the monitor package design.

  • EPS 폼은 충격하중으로부터 전자제품의 파손을 방지하기 위하여 포장재로 많이 사용되는 경량소재이며 밀도, 미세구조, 변형률 속도에 따라 에너지 흡수성능이 달라진다. 본 연구에서는 변형률속도와 밀도의 변화에 대한 EPS 폼의 에너지 흡수성능을 평가하기 위하여 18.5 ~ 37.0kg/m3의 밀도를 갖는 EPS 폼의 압축시험을 수행하였다. 중고속 압축시험을 위하여 낙하방식의 시험기를 개발, 사용하였으며 변형률 속도 0.06/s ~ 60/s에서의 압축시험을 통하여 EPS 폼의 변형률속도 효과를 분석하였다. 시험 결과 변형률 속도가 0.06/s에서 60/s로 증가할 경우 EPS 폼의 강도는 약 1.7배 증가하는 것으로 관찰되었다. 또한 변형률 속도에 따른 소재의 민감도는 변형률이 증가할수록 커지는 것으로 관찰되었다.

발포 폴리스티렌 수지를 수축저감제로 이용한 불포화 폴리에스테르 모르타르의 특성 (Properties of Unsaturated Polyester Mortar Using Expanded Polystyrene as a Shrinkage-Reducing Additive)

  • 본 연구에서는 열경화성인 UP 수지에 열가소성 스티렌 수지를 혼합하여 사용함으로써 UP 수지의 경화기구 중 스티렌 수지가 수축보완 효과를 일으켜 UP 모르타르의 경화수축을 저감시킬 수 있다는 가능성을 확인하고자 실시하였으며 그에 따른 역학적 성질의 변화를 함께 검토하였다. 본 연구결과, 폐 스티로폴 용해액을 첨가한 불포화 폴리에스테르 수지의 점도는 EPS/PS비가 30% 미만일 경우는 PS/UP비가 증가함에 따라 감소하여 시공성 면에서 EPS/PS비가 30%이내에서 적절하였다. 또한 휨 및 압축강도는 EPS/PS비보다는 PS/UP비에 따른 영향이 크게 나타났으며 PS/UP비 30%이하에서 감소 정도가 작았으며, EPS/PS비와 PS/UP비가 증가함에 따라서 경화수축은 전체적으로 감소되는 경향을 보였다. 적절한 시공성과 휨 및 압축강도 특성 그리고 경화수축 시험의 종합적인 결과, EPS/PS비 30%, PS/UP비 30%일 때 최적의 배합 조건으로 나타났다. 이로서 폐 스티로폴을 UP 모르타르이 수축저감제로서 사용함에 있어 역학적 성질의 큰 변화 없이 경화수축을 제어할 수 있다는 결과를 얻어 실제현장에서의 사용성이 기대되며, 또한 본 연구에서 사용한 스티렌 수지는 폐 발포 폴리스티렌을 스티렌 모노머에 액화시킨 것으로서 폐기물로 발생되는 폐 스티로폴의 자원재활용의 측면에도 그 의미가 있다고 할 수 있다.
