  • To supply a power distribution network with stable power in a high-speed mixed mode system, simultaneous switching noise caused at the multilayer PCB and package structures needs to be sufficiently suppressed. The uni-planar compact electromagnetic bandgap (UC-EBG) structure is well known as a promising solution to suppress the power noise and isolate noise-sensitive analog/RF circuits from a noisy digital circuit. However, a typical UC-EBG structure has several severe problems, such as a limitation in the stop band's lower cutoff frequency and signal quality degradation. To make up for the defects of a conventional EBG structure, a partially located EBG structure with decoupling capacitors is proposed in this paper as a means of both suppressing the power noise propagation and minimizing the effects of the perforated reference plane on the signal quality. The proposed structure is validated and investigated through simulation and measurement in both frequency and time domains.

  • In this study, the influence of the near field, far field and radiation directivity of microstrip patch antenna when is used mushroom EBG(Electromagnetic Band Gap) as ground is investigated. Using characteristic of dispersion diagram of mushroom EBG, we calculated forbidden band(2.36GHz-2.85GHz) given mushroom type EBG microstrip antenna(2.45GHz) having 2-layer EBG that is operating within forbidden band. In oder to conform performance enhancemen of antenna using EBG ground, we have compared with the antenna using PEC(Perfect Electric Conductor) ground. We could know about 2.74dB increment of the radiation directivity, because EBG can suppress surface wave that is generated at interfaces of the dielectrics-conductor.

  • This paper presents a new microwave oscillator incorporating a corrugated coplanar waveguide (CCPW) electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) structure as its terminating resonance component. The use of a compact CCPW EBG structure was effective in reducing the phase noise and improving the harmonic characteristics of the microwave oscillator circuit without additional backside processing and drastic size increment. The fully planar CCPW oscillator oscillating at the frequency of 5.41 GHz showed a phase noise characteristic of -90.7 dBc/Hz at 100kHz offset and a second harmonic suppression of 42.67 dB.

  • In this paper, we propose a new EBG structure that the two unit cells are connected by the bridge line in signal transmission plane. The SSN of the power plane is reduced effectively by via holes and bridge lines connecting the unit cells. The superior signal transfer characteristic is shown between the signal lines in the signal transmission plane. The proposed EBG structure contains 1.2 GHz cut-off frequency and less than -30 dB suppression in the 8.3 GHz broad bandwidth. In addition, To improve the SI(Signal Integrity) in signal transmission plane keeping the same bandstop frequency range, the optimized location of the reference plane is proposed.

  • In this raper, proposed easy half-wavelength LPF and acceptor structure in actuality manufacture using EBG (Electromagnatic Bandgap) structure for application of micro-strip circuit. Because conventional half-wavelength LPF and acceptor is narrow line-width of High impedance, actuality manufacture is difficult. Width that in proposed structure narrow microstrip line of High impedance EBG structure use and has equal impedance embodied to wide microstrip line. Also, it is seen that actuality manufacture is available applying to half-wavelength LPF that have cut-off Frequency of 3GHz.

  • Radiation characteristics of microstrip patch antennas integrated with mushroom-like EBG structures in all directions and length direction on a substrate with the relative dielectric constant of 10 are systematically analyzed. As the substrate thickness increases, the effect of the surface wave on the input impedance and radiation pattern of a patch antenna increases. The effect of EBG structures on the input impedance of a patch antenna is negligible when the distances between EBG structures and the center of a patch antenna are 0.4 ${\gamma}_0$, 0.2 ${\gamma}_0$ and 0.1 ${\gamma}_0$ for the substrate thickness of 3.2 mm, 1.6 mm and 0.8 mm, respectively. The forward radiation is improved due to the suppression of surface wave when the periods of EBG structures integrated are larger than 2, 2, 3 periods for the substrate thickness of 3.2 mm, 1.6 mm and 0.8 mm, respectively. The effects of EBG structures on the radiation characteristics of a patch antenna integrated with EBG structures in all directions and length direction are similar.

  • In this paper, a novel power/ground plane using the hybrid-cell electromagnetic band-gap(EBG) structure is proposed for the wide-band suppression of the ground bound noise(GBN) or simultaneous switching noise(SSN). The -30 dB stopband of the proposed structure starts from a few hundred MHz where the GBN/SSN energy is dominant. The distinctive features of this new structure are the thin spiral strip line and hybrid-cells. They realize the enhanced inductance and the shorter period of the EBG lattice. As a result, the lower cut-off frequency and bandwidth of the -30 dB stopband becomes lower and wider, respectively. In addition, the proposed structure has smaller number of resonance modes between power/ground planes and performs a low EMI behavior compared with the reference board.

  • Radiation characteristics of microstrip patch antennas integrated with mushroom-like EBG structures in length direction, width direction and all directions are analyzed. Patch antennas integrated with EBG structures in length direction shows the best radiation characteristics among the cases integrated in three directions. The case for the feed point of a patch antenna located in the center of both EBG structures integrated with a patch antenna shows better symmetric E-plane radiation pattern, higher forward radiation intensity, and lower backward radiation intensity compared to the case for the center of a patch antenna located in the center of both EBG structures. The variation of the radiation characteristics of patch antennas integrated with EBG structures more than 4 periods versus number of periods of EBG structures integrated is very small.

  • In this paper, a novel hexagonal-shaped electromagnetic bandgap(EBG) power plane for the suppression of the ground bounce noise(GBN) in high-speed circuits is proposed. The proposed structure consists of hexagonal-shaped unit cells and detoured bridges connecting the unit cells. The hexagonal-shaped unit cells could omni-directionally suppress the GBN in digital circuits. The fabricated power plane's omni-directional -30 dB suppression bandwidth is from 330 MHz to 5.6 GHz. Then the proposed structure suppresses electromagnetic interference(EMI) caused by the GBN within the stopband. As a result, the proposed structure is expected to be conducive solving EMI problem in high-speed circuits.

  • We present experimental demonstrations of electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) structures for the wideband suppression of radiated emissions from a power bus in high-speed printed circuit boards (PCBs). In most of the PCB designs, a parallel plate waveguide (PPW) structure is employed for a power bus. This structure significantly produces the wideband-radiated emissions resulting from parallel plate modes. To suppress the parallel plate modes in the wideband frequency range, the power buses based on the electromagnetic bandgap structure with a defected ground structure (DGS) are presented. DGSs are applied to a metal plane that is connected to a rectangular EBG patch by using a via structure. The use of the DGS increases the characteristic impedance value of a unit cell, thereby substantially improving the suppression bandwidth of the radiated emissions. It is experimentally demonstrated that the DGS-EBG structure significantly mitigates the radiated emissions over the frequency range of 0.5 GHz to 2 GHz as compared to the PPW.
