Berberis chitria (family Berberidaceae) has a close affinity with B. aristata, used in traditional systems of medicine as a drug 'Daruharidra' for skin disease, jaundice, affection of eyes, and rheumatism. Keeping this in view, in the present study attempts have been made to identify marker characters of B. chitria in order to differentiate the two species. Some of the diagnostic features of the root are patches of pericyclic fibre, pitted sclerieds and berberine containing cells and heterocyclic medullary rays. Besides, the physicochemical characters such as total ash; acid insoluble ash; alcohol and water soluble extractive; tannins; sugar and starch percentages has shown variations. The percentage of berberine as berberine hydrochloride was also calculated through HPTLC densitometric method and it was found little higher than B. aristata and B. asiatica i.e. 3.16%. Thus, this species can be utilized as a possible substitute to Daruharidra.

Over two hundred twenty-eight million cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in the world have been reported until the 21st of September 2021 after the first rise in December 2019. The virus caused the disease called severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Over 4 million deaths blame COVID-19 during the last one year and 8 months in the world. Currently, four SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern are mainly focused by pandemic studies with limited experiments to translate the infectivity and pathogenicity of each variant. The SARS-CoV-2 α, β, γ, and δ variant of concern was originated from United Kingdom, South Africa, Brazil/Japan, and India, respectively. The classification of SARS-CoV-2 variant is based on the mutation in spike (S) gene on the envelop of SARS-CoV-2. This review describes four SARS-CoV-2 α, β, γ, and δ variants of concern including SARS-CoV-2 ε, ζ, η, ι, κ, and B.1.617.3 variants of interest and alert. Recently, SARS-CoV-2 δ variant prevails over different countries that have 3 unique mutation sites: E156del/R158G in the N-terminal domain and T478K in a crucial receptor binding domain. A particular mutation in the functional domain of the S gene is probably associated with the infectivity and pathogenesis of the SARS-CoV-2 variant.

Chitosan was partially degraded by using nitrous acid. The deacetylation degree of chitosan decreased with its degree of hydrolysis. Deacetylation degree of each fraction was less than 50%. The degraded product was fractionated by means of precipitation using aqueous methanol solution or aqueous methanol-acetone solution. The molecular weight of each fraction was distributed between 6000 and 4000, and below 2000 for being precipitated using aqueous methanol solution and aqueous methanol-acetone solution respectively. They had narrow molecular weight distributions, and their polydispersities were less than 1.7. The antibacterial activities for each fraction were evaluated against Bacillus subtilis HB 101 and E. coli PP 2, gram-positive bacteria and gram-negative bacteria, respectively. Fraction B (Mw=5100) showed high antibacteiral activity. All fractions were more active against Bacillus subtilis than E. coli.

This study was conducted to assess the microbiological quality of raw and cooked foods served in the elementary school food service. Raw and cooked food samples were collected from 11 selected elementary schools in both June to July and September to October of 2005. Petrifilm plates were used to determine (in duplicate) total aerobic colony counts (PAC), Enterobacteriaceae (PE), coliform counts (PCC), and E. coli counts (PEC). Heavy contamination of Enterobacteriaceae (from 0.08 to 7.40 log CFU/g) and total coliform (0.50 to 6.52 log CFU/g) were observed in raw materials and cooked foods. Escherichia coli (E. coli) were detected in the sample of currant tomato (3.70 log CFU/g), sesame leaf (3.59 log CFU/g), dropwort (0.20 log CFU/g), crown daisy (3.15 log CFU/g), parsley (3.00 log CFU/g), peeled green onion (1.74 log CFU/g), frozen pork (0.65 log CFU/g), frozen beef (0.20 or 1.50 log CFU/g), chicken (1.78 log CFU/g), and young radish leaf seasoned with soybean paste (1.24 log CFU/g). Multiplex PCR system was used to determine the food-borne pathogens: Salmonella spp., Bacillus cereus (B. cereus), E. coli O157:H7, Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes), Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Campylobacter jejuni (C. jejuni), Shigella spp., B. cereus was detected in 19 samples of raw materials and 8 samples of cooked foods. With regard to quantitative analysis, B. cereus counts exceeded 5.46, 3.48 and 1.79 log CFU/g in sesame leaf, peeled green onion and seasoned mungbean jelly, respectively. E. coli O157:H7 was detected on 2 samples of frozen beefs, and its biochemical characteristics of one beef sample was confirmed with API 20E kit (93.7%). L. monocytogenes was detected in fried rice paper dumpling, but the presumptive colonies were not detected onto the conventional plate. C. jejuni was detected in peeled & washed onion.

To examine the effects of HHCP on atopic dermatitis and its various immunopathologic parameters was induced by DNCB in NC/Nga mice and the animals were orally administrated with HHCP. We summarized the results obtained from serum levels of IgE and the numbers of various immune cells as follow. HHCP has no cytotoxic effects at the range of concentration (1-400 ${\mu}g$/ml) on fibroblast isolated from lung of BALB/c mice. HHCP significantly lowered the serum levels of IgE compared with control at 16 and 20 week. HHCP significantly reduced the number of CD19$^+$ cell in spleen and DLN, as well as the number of B220$^+$ /IgE$^+$ cell in DLN compared with control. HHCP significantly reduced the number of ${\alpha}$${\beta}$ TCR$^+$ in spleen and DLN, the number of CD8$^+$ in spleen compared with control, and also significantly reduced the number of CD3$^+$, CCR3, CD3$^+$/CD69$^+$, CD3/ CCR3, CD4$^+$, CD3$^+$/ CD4$^+$/CD45$^+$ cell in DLN. HHCP increased the number of NK$^+$ cells in spleen compared with control, in contrast significantly decreased the number of CD11c$^+$/ Classll$^+$ cell and CD11b$^+$/Gr-1$^+$ cell in DLN. Taken together, these results suggested that HHCP has suppressive effects on atopic dermatitis through the inhibition of IgE production and modulation of immune cell population in NC/Nga mice.
We introduce a novel and versatile approach for preparing self-assembled nanoporous multilayered films with antireflective properties. Protonated polystyrene-block-poly (4-vinylpyrine) (PS-b-P4VP) and anionic polystyrene-block-poly (acrylic acid) (PS-b-PAA) block copolymer micelles (BCM) were used as building blocks for the layer-by-layer assembly of BCM multilayer films. BCM film growth is governed by electrostatic and hydrogen-bonding interactions between the oppositely BCMs. Both film porosity and film thickness are dependent upon the charge density of the micelles, with the porosity of the film controlled by the solution pH and the molecular weight (Mw) of the constituents. PS7K-b-P4VP28K/PS2K-b-PAA8K films prepared at pH 4 (for PS7K-b-P4VP28K) and pH 6 (for PS2K-b-PAA8K) are highly nanoporous and antireflective. In contrast, PS7K-b-P4VP28K/PS2K-b-PAA8K films assembled at pH 4/4 show a relatively dense surface morphology due to the decreased charge density of PS2K-b-PAA8K. Films formed from BCMs with increased PS block and decreased hydrophilic block (P4VP or PAA) size (e.g., PS36K-b-P4VP12K/PS16K-b-PAA4K at pH 4/4) were also nanoporous. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the nanostructured electrochemical sensors based on patterning methods show the electrochemical activities. Anionic poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS) layers were selectively and uniformly deposited onto the catalase (CAT)-coated surface using the micro-contact printing method. The pH-induced charge reversal of catalase can provide the selective deposition of consecutive PE multilayers onto patterned PSS layers by causing the electrostatic repulsion between next PE layer and catalase. Based on this patterning method, the hybrid patterned multilayers composed of platinum nanoparticles (PtNP) and catalase were prepared and then their electrochemical properties were investigated from sensing $H_2O_2$ and NO gas. This study was based on the papers reported by our group. (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 128, 9935 (2006); Adv. Mater. 19, 4364 (2007); Electro. Mater. Lett. 3, 163 (2007)).

In the present study we evaluated drug-drug interaction potential of ambroxol and cetirizine mediated by inhibition of CYP isoforms including CYP1A2, CYP2A6, CYP2B6, CYP2C9, CYP2C19, CYP2D6, CYP2E1 and CYP3A4 using pooled human liver microsomes (HLMs). As measured by liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry, cetirizine and ambroxol inhibited significantly CYP2E1 but the maximal inhibition was approximately 36% at 10 ${\mu}M$ cetirizine and 28% at 3 ${\mu}M$ ambroxol. In addition, CYP2D6 activity was decreased to approximately 83% of control activity in pooled HLM incubated with 3 ${\mu}M$ ambroxol. Activities of CYP1A2, CYP2A6, CYP2B6, CYP2C9, CYP2C19, and CYP3A4 were not significantly inhibited by cetirizine and ambroxol. Considering their maximal plasma concentration in human ($C_{max}$ of cetirizine is approximately 0.67 ${\mu}M$ and $C_{max}$ of ambroxol is 0.044 ${\mu}M$), these two drugs have very low possibility in drug-drug interaction by CYP inhibition in clinical situations.
