We have investigated the rheological behaviours of emulsions containing polymers. The polymers used in this study were polyacrylamide and carboxy vinyl polymer. The emulsion with polyacrylamide shows better prior preference than that with carboxy vinyl polymer on the skin texture. In the toxicity test, such as, LLNA cell toxicity, skin organ culture and human patch test, polyacrylamide was the appropriate materials for the cosmetics. The viscosity of polyacrylamide shows maximum value in neutral pH and good stability against temperature. The decreasing effect of viscosity against salt was not good enough but showed a better result than that of carboxy vinyl polymer. Two times the amount of polyacrylamide should be used for the formation of a similar viscosity of carboxy vinyl polymer. Yield value of polyacrylamide was low and the effect for the stabilizing emulsions was also low.
We examined the psychophysiological effects of navigation in a virtual reality (VR). Subjects were exposed to the VR, and required to detect specific objects. Ten electrophysiological signals were recorded before, during, and after navigation in the VR. Six questionnaires on the VR experience were acquired from 45 healthy subjects. There were significant changes between the VR period and the pre-VR control period in several psychophysiological measurements. During the VR period, eye blink, skin conductance level, and alpha frequency of EEG were decreased but gamma wave were increased. Physiological changes associated with cybersickness included increased heart rate, eye blink, skin conductance response, and gamma wave and decreased photoplethysmogram and skin temperature. These results suggest an attentional change during VR navigation and activation of the autonomic nervous system for cybersickness. These findings would enhance our understanding for the psychophysiological changes during VR navigation and cybersickness.
Saccharina japonica (SJ), a brown algae, exerts various pharmacological effects, including anti-oxidant, immunemodulating and anti-cancer properties. This study aimed to determine the pharmacological mechanism of SJ on atopic dermatitis in vivo and in vitro. We investigated the pharmacological effects of SJ on 2, 4-dinitrochlrobenzene (DNCB)- induced atopic dermatitis clinical symptoms in mice. Additionally, we evaluated the effects of SJ on the inflammatory cytokine production and nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) activation in HaCaT cells. The findings of this study demonstrated that SJ reduced the clinical symptoms of atopic dermatitis, such as skin dryness, erythema and eczematous, and serum histamine and IgE level in DNCB-induced atopic dermatitis model. Additionally, SJ inhibited the NF-κB activation in atopic dermatitis-like skin lesion and HaCaT cells. Collectively, this result suggests that SJ could be used as a therapeutic agent for skin inflammation, including atopic dermatitis.
Oldenlandia diffusa (OD), a member of the Rubiaceae family, has been used for treating inflammatory and infectious diseases. However, the anti-atopic effects of OD are not completely understood yet. Thus, the aim of the present study was to elucidate beneficial effects of OD on atopic dermatitis (AD) in vivo. We examined the pharmacological effects of OD on compound 48/80- or histamine-induced scratching behaviors and 2, 4-dinitrochlrobenzene (DNCB)-induced AD-like skin lesions in mice. Additionally, we evaluated regulatory effects of OD on the expression of interleukin (IL)-6 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α in DNCB-induced AD-like skin lesions. Results showed that OD inhibited the scratching behavior and AD symptoms. It also decreased serum levels of IgE and histamine in mice. Moreover, OD significantly ameliorated the expression of IL-6 and TNF-α in AD-like skin lesion. These finding suggest experimental evidence of that OD's potential for treating AD.

Purpose: The primary objective of this study was to estimate the radiation absorbed doses in certain critical organs in the head and neck region with an Orthopos plus, a Panelipse, and a Panex-E machines. The second objective was to compare the absorbed doses between 5 inch by 12 inch and 6 inch by 12 inch image field for the Orthopos plus. Materials and Methods: Rando phantom and LiF TLD chips were used for dosimetry. The absorbed doses were measured at the thyroid gland, the submandibular gland, the parotid gland, the mouth floor, the maxillary sinus, the brain, the mandibular body, the mandibular ramus, the 2nd cervical spine and the skin over TMJ area. Results: The highest absorbed dose value was recorded at the mandibular ramus for the Orthopos plus with narrow image field. Higher absorbed dose values were recorded at the parotid gland, the mouth floor, the submandibular gland, and the 2nd cervical spine. The doses in the parotid gland were 597 μGy and 529 μGy with Orthopos plus, 638 μGy with Panelipse, and 1094μGy with Panex-E. Corresponding figures for the mandibular ramus were 2363 Gy and 1220 μGy, 248 μGy, and 118 μGy. The absorbed doses to the thyroid gland, the maxillary sinus, the brain, and the skin over TMJ were very low. Conclusion: Higher exposure values were recorded for the Orthopos plus than Panelipse and Panex-E. There was no significant differences of the absorbed doses according to the image field size.
Non-thermal atmospheric-pressure plasma, also named cold plasma, is defined as a partly ionized gas. Therefore, it cannot be equated with plasma from blood; it is not biological in nature. Non-thermal atmospheric-pressure plasma is a new innovative approach in medicine not only for the treatment of wounds, but with a wide-range of other applications, as e.g. topical treatment of other skin diseases with microbial involvement or treatment of cancer diseases. This review emphasizes plasma effects on wound healing. Non-thermal atmospheric-pressure plasma can support wound healing by its antiseptic effects, by stimulation of proliferation and migration of wound relating skin cells, by activation or inhibition of integrin receptors on the cell surface or by its pro-angiogenic effect. We summarize the effects of plasma on eukaryotic cells, especially on keratinocytes in terms of viability, proliferation, DNA, adhesion molecules and angiogenesis together with the role of reactive oxygen species and other components of plasma. The outcome of first clinical trials regarding wound healing is pointed out.
The tyrosinase inhibition effects of 23 marine-derived seaweeds harvested in Korea were screened to determine their potential as skin-whitening agents. Of the 23 species initially screened, the total phenolic (TP) content of brown, green, and red seaweeds were 7.62-280.11, 5.24-62.37, and 0.63-28.76 phloroglucinol equivalents (PGE) mg/g, respectively. Brown seaweed extracts exhibited much stronger inhibitory activities than green and red seaweed extracts. Among the brown seaweeds, Ecklonia cava had the highest TP content (280.11 PGE mg/g) and the strongest tyrosinase inhibitory effect with a half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) value of 4.38 ㎍/mL. The kinetics of tyrosinase inhibition, analyzed by Lineweaver-Burk plots, found E. cava extract to be a non-competitive inhibitor. This study's results indicated that E. cava's inhibition of tyrosinase may have potential applications in the cosmetic industry.
특히 Al, Fe 및 Mn의 함량이 높았으며 이들 중금속은 total phenolic compound 함량이 높은 잎에 대부분이 축적되었다." separating himself from the real world.
