A Study of Front-end System for BD Recorder (BD 기록기를 위한 전단 시스템에 관한 연구)

  • The front-end system having a capable of 2x reading and writing of BD-R/Ra/ROM is developed. Its readability is improved by adopting 5-tap adaptive partial response maximum likelihood (PRML) with the PR(a,b,c,d,e) type channel. Due to the proposed PRML, less than $2{\times}10^{-4}$ of the bit error rate (BER) is achieved with radial and tangential tilt margin of over${\mp}0.6{\circ}$ on 25GB disc in 2x speed. The method of an optimum Power control (OPC) for stable writing of various BD-R/RE is proposed. The developed chip contains 14-million transistors in a $60mm^2$ dies, and is fabricated in $0.18-{\mu}m$ CMOS technology.

Coordination of UPFC and Reactive Power Sources for Steady-state Voltage Control (정상상태 전압제어를 위한 UPFC와 조상설비의 협조)

  • This paper presents a new method of local voltage control to achieve coordinative control among UPFC(Unified Power Flow Controller) and conventional reactive compensation equipments, such as switched-shunt and ULTC(Under-Load Tap Changing) transformer. Reactive power control has various difficult aspects to control because of difficulty of system analysis. Recently, the progress of power electronics technologies has lead to commercial availability of several FACTS(Flexible AC Transmission System) devices. The UPFC(Unified Power Flow Controller) simultaneously allows the independent control of active and reactive power flows as well as control of the voltage profile. When conventional reactive power sources and UPFC are used to control system voltage, the UPFC reacts to the voltage deviation faster than the conventional reactive power sources. Keeping reactive power reserve in an UPFC during steady-state operation is always needed to provide reactive power requirements during emergencies. Therefore, coordination control among UPFC and conventional reactive power sources is needed. This paper describe the method to keep or control the voltage of power system of local area and to manege reactive power reserve using PSS/E with Python. The result of simulation shows that the proposed method can control the local bus voltage within the given voltage limit and manege reactive power reserve.

An Ozone Micro-bubble Technique for Seed Sterilization in Alfalfa Sprouts

  • The efficacy of ozone micro-bubble water (OMBW) in reducing microbial populations on alfalfa seeds was investigated in this study. We observed the surface of alfalfa seeds using microscopy and found that many cracks and crevices existing on the surface could harbor pathogens. Alfalfa seeds were treated with tap water (TW), micro-bubble water (MBW), ozone water (OW), ozone micro-bubble water (OMBW), and chlorine water (CL) for 5 min, and total microbial population, E. coli and Salmonella spp. colonies were determined. Also, the sterilized seeds were germinated and cultivated for 5 d after sowing to investigate the percentage of germination and the growth of alfalfa sprouts. The treatments with OMBW and CL were most effective in reducing total microbial populations and E. coli was eliminated by OW, OMBW, and CL treatments. CL treatment reduced the percentage of germination and fresh weight of alfalfa sprouts, but OMBW did not cause any negative effects on the germination and growth of alfalfa sprouts. These results indicate that OMBW can be used as an effective sanitizer for eliminating seed-borne pathogens without detrimental effects on seed viability.

Risk assessment of wastewater reuse for Irrigation water (하수처리수의 관개용수 재이용을 위한 위해성 평가)

  • Wastewater reuse are exposed public health risk by pathogens. Therefore, this study was examined for microbial risk assessment after irrigation as treated wastewater in paddy rice plots. Five treatments were used: biofilter effluent, UV disinfected water, pond treatment, wetland treatment and conventional irrigation water. Risk assessment was calculated based on the beta-Poisson model by concentration of E. coli from 2003 to 2005. Monte-Carlo simulation (n=10,000) was used to estimate the risk characterization of uncertainty. The risk range was from $10^{-5}$ to $10^{-8}$ except biofilter effluent was $10^{-4}$ in June. The USEPA(1992) has recommended that risk of < $10^{-4}$ is acceptable level of safety for potable waters. In 2005, risk value was lower than 2003, 2004 because of the first irrigation for plowing water is lower E. coli concentration used tap water. It is shown that the first irrigation water quality was important for wastewater irrigation in paddy. UV disinfection and natural treatment used pond and wetland were thought to be an effective for wastewater reuse.

Performance Improvement of Adaptive Noise Cancellation Using a Speech Detector

  • The performance of two-channel adaptive noise canceller is ofter degraded by the weights perturbation due to the speech signal. In this paper, an adaptive noise canceller employing a speech detector and two adaptation algorithms which are switched according to the speech detector is proposed. When highly correlated speech signal is detected, the tap weights of the adaptive filter are adapted by the sign algorithm. On the other hand, the weights are adapted by the NLMS algorithm when silence is detected or when the characteristics of the noise propagation channel is changed. The employed speech detector utilizes the power ratio of the input and the output of an adaptive linear prediction-error filter. According to the computer simulation, the proposed method yields better performance than conventional ones.

Design of Subband Codecs Using Optimized Vector Quantizer

  • This paper provides an approach for representing an optimum vector quantizer by a scalar nonlinear gain-plus-additive noise model. The validity and accuracy of this analytic model is confirmed by comparing the calcuated model quantization errors with actual simulation of the optimum Linde-Buzo-Gray(LBG) vector quantizer. Using this model we frm MSE measure of an M-band filter bank codec in terms of the equivalent scalar quantizatin model and find the optimum FIR filter coefficients for each channel in the M-band structure for a given bit rate, given filter length, and given input signal correlation model. Specific design examples are worked out for 4-tap filters in the two-band paraunitary case. These theoretical results are confirmed by extensive Monte Carlo simulation.

Manganese treatment to reduce black water occurrence in the water supply

  • 26 multi-regional water treatment plants (WTPs) were investigated, to determine the characteristics of manganese (Mn) concentration and removal in Korea. Mn concentrations of raw water in most WTPs were higher than the drinking water standard (i.e., 0.05 mg/L); thus, proper removal of Mn at the WTPs is needed. Mn concentration was generally higher in lakes than rivers due to seasonal lake turnovers. The Mn concentrations of treated water at 26 WTPs in 2012 were less than 0.05 mg/L, due to strict law enforcement and water treatment processes optimization. However, before 2010, those concentrations were more than 0.05 mg/L, which could have led to an accumulation of Mn oxides in the distribution system. This could be one of the main reasons for black water occurrence. Therefore, regular monitoring of Mn concentration in the distribution system, flushing, and proper Mn removal at WTPs are needed, to supply clean and palatable tap water.

  • Anterior cutaneous nerve entrapment syndrome (ACNES) is one the most common cause of chronic abdominal wall pain. The syndrome is mostly misdiagnosed, treated wrongly and inadequately. If diagnosed correctly by history, examination and a positive carnett test, the suffering of the patient can be relieved by addressing the cause i.e. local anaesthetic with steroid injection at the entrapment site. Conventionally, the injection is done by landmark technique. In this report, we have described 2 patients who were diagnosed with ACNES who were offered ultrasound guided transverses abdominis plane (TAP) injection who got significant pain relief for a long duration of time.

A VLSI implementation of base band MODEM for direct-sequence spread spectrum communication (직접 확산 통신을 위한 기저 대역 MODEM의 VLSI 구현)

  • In tis paper, w eproposed a modeling for direct-sequence spread communication base band modem in RT-level VHDL and implemented in a one-chip VLSI and tested. The transmitter modulates with DQPSK modulation method and spreads a modulated signal with 32-bit PN code into 1.152MHz. The receiver de-spreads a signal using 32-tap matched filter and recovers with DQPSK demodulation method. The digital frequency synthesizer generates the sine signal and the cosine signal of 2.304MHz with ROM tables in the size of 7$\^$*/256 and 6$\^$*/256, respectively. The implemented VLSI has been verified a BER with 10$\^$-4/ at E$\_$b//N$\_$o/ of 13dB with a SPW fixed design model and fabricated in the 0.8.mu.m KG6423 gate array with a VHDL model.

OverIT: An Interactive Overlay for Touchscreen-based UI Customization by Demonstration

  • Smartphones have been widely used for various purposes and stay connected with people at all times. However, the use of such touchscreen devices can be physically restricted depending on users' context where only one hand is available to interact with the device. Even major smartphone manufacturers (e.g., Apple, Samsung) offer one handed mode, they still lack functions in the third-party applications, and the process is also complicated. We propose OverIT, a system that enables users to customize interfaces by adding new buttons on an interactive overlay which can be positioned anywhere on the touchscreen where each button serves the same functionality as an existing one. It is designed to support users to map a certain button event freely and easily to a newly created button by performing a demonstration of a button tap. We expect our system to improve the overall user experience of one-handed interaction with touchscreen devices.
