Brillouin backscatter is a type of reflection that occurs when light is shone into an optical fibre. Brillouin reflections are very sensitive to changes in the fibre arising from external effects, such as temperature, strain and pressure. We report here several case studies on the measurement of strain using Brillouin reflections. A mechanical bending test of an I beam, deployed with both fiber optic sensors and conventional strain gauge rosettes, was performed with the aim of evaluating: (1) the capability and technical limit of the DTSS technology for strain profile sensing; (2) the reliability of strain measurement using fiber optic sensor. The average values of strains obtained from both DTSS and strain gauges (corresponding to the deflection of I beam) showed a linear relationship and an excellent one-to-one match. A practical application of DTSS technology as an early warning system for land sliding or subsidence was examined through a field test at a hillside. Extremely strong, lightweight, rugged, survivable tight-buffered cables, designed for optimal strain transfer to the fibre, were used and clamped on the subsurface at a depth of about 50cm. It was proved that DTSS measurements could detect the exact position and the progress of strain changes induced by land sliding and subsidence. We also carried out the first ever distributed dynamic strain measurement (10Hz) on the Korean Train eXpress(KTX) railway track in Daejeon, Korea. The aim was to analyse the integrity of a section of track that had recently been repaired. The Sensornet DTSS was used to monitor this 85m section of track while a KTX train passed over. In the repaired section the strain increases to levels of 90 microstrain, whereas in the section of regular track the strain is in the region of 30-50 microstrain. The results were excellent since they demonstrate that the DTSS is able to measure small, dynamic changes in strain in rails during normal operating conditions. The current 10km range of the DTSS creates a potential to monitor the integrity of large lengths of track, and especially higher risk sections such as bridges, repaired track and areas at risk of subsidence.
In this paper, to verify the field application of a displacement estimation technique based on the relationship between displacement and strain, static and dynamic field load test are performed on three-span continuous real bridge structures. The superstructure types of the test bridges are IPC girder highway bridge and steel box girder AGT bridge. LVDTs and strain gauges are attached to them; then, the responses due to test vehicle are measured. To obtain the displacement-strain relationship of the test bridges, the bridges are modeled as grillage system with 6 DOFs for the purpose of structural analyses. Static and dynamic displacements, which are estimated using both the calculated displacement-strain relationship and the measured strain signal, agree well with the values measured by LVDT. This study demonstrates that the displacement estimation technique using the strain signal can be effectively applied to the displacement measurement of bridge structures that cross rivers/roads/railways or have high clearance.
A Fiber optic strain sensor for the measurement of the internal strain of a concrete specimen was developed. This sensor was a 11 mm Fiber-optic Fabry-Perot interferometer attached inside a stainless steel pipe of 2 mm diameter. The fabricated strain sensors were embedded in a reinforced concrete structure of $100{\times}100{\times}500\;mm^3$ size and were measured the internal strain of a concrete structure when the external pressure was applied to the structure. For a field application, the strain sensors were attached on the bottom of a real bridge and dynamic loading test were executed. In the test, they showed good sensitivity as a deformation sensor and capability of remote monitoring.
The influences of carbon black loading and cure type on the cure characteristics including kinetics and dynamic mechanical properties were investigated for a styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR). The rate constants of accelerated sulfur vulcanization reaction at three different temperatures were determined using a cure rheometer, and they were compared with those from the direct measurement of sulfur concentration. The strain softening behavior under dynamic deformation, known as the Payne effect was also discussed depending on the carbon black loading and cure type.

Dynamic measurements are used rather sparingly to determine the elastic moduli of rock cores and modulus values are not much utilized in design practice. The reason seems to result from the general perception that values obtained by dynamic measurement are much higher (about 10 times) than those determined statically. This paper presents results from dynamic and static tests on rock cores. The findings are : 1) elastic moduli can be consistently determined by laboratory seismic testing. 2) nonlear deformation characteristic of rock cores was tentatively proposed with variation in elastic modulus with strain.

To increase speed up of train, in the field of catenary system, it is necessary to develop of new monitoring methods for dynamic interaction between pantograph and contact wire. Also, there is a need to develop technologies that constantly measure are from various railway structure such as uplift of contact wire, vibration of catenary, dynamic strain of contact line in tunnel. In this paper condition monitoring systems for dynamic performance of catenary systems in tunnel were proposed. An advanced method and results of field tests using high speed camera for monitoring of vertical upward movement of the grooved contact wire due to the force produced from the pantograph were presented. The proposed uplift measurement system of contact wire is expected to enhance precision of current collection quality performance assessment methods at high-speed lines.

Fiber Bra99 grating (FBG) sensor, one of the fiber optic sensor (FOS) offers lots of advantages for structural health monitoring due to its multiplexing capability. Also, it is proper to measure the structural vibration with no mass concentration effect. In this paper, we constructed two sensor arrays composed of 9 FBG sensors for the vibration and mode sensing of a composites beam. For an accurate measurement of wavelength shift, a signal processing board with an electric circuit based on time-interval counting was developed. This sensor system showed a good resolution of dynamic strain (<10${\mu}{\varepsilon}$). Using this sensor system, dynamic strains at 9 points of composite beam was measured and strain measured mode shape of the beam was calculated from the acquired strains and compared with numerical results by ABAQUS.

A new BWIM(bridge weigh-in-motion) algorithm using both measured strain and acceleration data is proposed. To consider the effects of bridge vibration on the estimation of moving loads, the dynamic governing equation is applied with the known stiffness and mass properties but damping is ignored. Dynamic displacements are computed indirectly from the measured strains using the beam theory and accelerations are measured directly by accelerometers. To convert a unit moving load to its equivalent nodal force, a transformation matrix is determined. The incompleteness in the measured responses is considered in developing the algorithm. To examine the proposed BWIM algorithm, simulation studies, laboratory experiments and field tests were carried. In the simulation study, effects of measurement noise and estimation error in the vehicle speed on the results were investigated.
In this study, microstructure evolution and crystallographic orientation are investigated under various deformation conditions in M1 magnesium alloy. M1 magnesium ingot was rolled at 673 K with the rolling reduction of 30%. The compression test specimens were machined out from rolled plate, and then the specimens were annealed at 823 K for 1h. Uniaxial compression tests were conducted at 723 K and under the strain rate ranging from $5.0{\times}10^{-4}s^{-1}$ to $5.0{\times}10^{-2}s^{-1}$ up to a true strain of -1.0. For observation of crystal orientation distribution, EBSD measurement was performed. Occurrence of the dynamic recrystallization and grain boundary migration were confirmed in all case of the specimens. The distribution of the grains is not uniformed in the experimental conditions.
The main purpose of this study is to characterize the size-dependent strain rate sensitivity in structural steel using the continue stiffness measurement (CSM) indentation. A series of experiments, such as CSM indentation and optical microscope examination, has been performed at the room temperature at different rate conditions. The results indicated that indentation hardness, strain rate, and flow stress showed size-dependent behavior. The dependency of indentation hardness, strain rate, and flow stress on the indentation size was attributed to the transition of the dislocation nucleation rate and the dislocation behaviors during the indentation process. Since both hardness and strain rate showed the size-dependent behavior, SRS tended to depend on the indentation depth. The results indicated that the SRS was quite high over 2.0 at the indentation depth of 240 nm and quickly dropping to 0.08, finally around 0.046 at large indents. The SRS values at large indentations strongly agree with the general range reported for several types of low-carbon steel in the literature (Chatfield and Rote 1974, Nguyen et al. 2018b, Luecke et al. 2005). The results from the present study can be used in both static and dynamic analyses of structures as well as to assess and understand the deformation mechanism and the stress-state of material underneath the indenter tip during the process of the indentation testing.
