Effect of Sintering Temperature on the Properties of $CaSiO_4:RE^{3+}$(RE=Eu, Sm, Tb, Dy, Ce) Phosphors

  • 최근에 고효율의 형광체를 개발하고자 무기물 모체에 주입된 희토류 이온의 발광에 대한 연구가 급부상하고 있다. 형광체는 고휘도, 넓은 시청 각도와 저 비용으로 인하여 대형 평판 디스플레이 분야로 그 응용성을 확장하는 플라즈마 디스플레이 패널 제작에 있어서 매우 중요한 물질이다. 현재 적색 형광체로 널리 사용되고 있는 발광 물질은 YBO3:Eu3+ 혹은 (Y,Gd)BO3:Eu3+ 형광체이지만, Eu3+ 이온이 중심대칭의 자리에 위치하기 때문에, Eu3+ 이온의 5D07F1 전이에 의한 주황색의 발광 세기가 5D07F2 전이에 의한 적색의 세기보다 강하여 고품질의 색상을 구현하는데 상당한 어려움이 있다. 이러한 문제점을 해결하기 위하여 새로운 모체 격자를 갖는 적색, 녹색, 청색 형광체 개발에 많은 노력이 집중되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 형광체 합성시 중요한 변수의 하나인 소결 온도가 새로운 다양한 색을 방출하는 형광체 분말 CaSiO4:RE3+ (RE=Eu, Sm, Tb, Dy, Ce)의 특성에 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. CaSiO4:RE3+ (RE=Eu, Sm, Tb, Dy, Ce) 형광체 분말 시료는 초기 물질 CaO (99.99%), SiO2 (99.99%), Eu2O3 (99.99%), Sm2O3 (99.9%), Tb4O7 (99.9%), Dy2O3 (99.9%), CeO2 (99.9%)을 화학적량으로 준비하였다. 볼밀, 건조 작업을 한 후에, 시료를 막자사발에 넣고 분쇄하여 3시간의 하소 공정과 5시간의 소결 공정을 수행하였다. 이때 소결 온도를 변수로 선택하여 각각 $800^{\circ}C$, $900^{\circ}C$, $1,000^{\circ}C$, $1,100^{\circ}C$에서 소결 작업을 수행하여 합성 분말의 구조, 표면, 광학적 특성을 측정하여 소결 온도가 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. Eu3+가 도핑된 CaSiO4 형광체 분말의 경우에, 발광 스펙트럼은 597, 618, 655, 707 nm에서 관측되었으며, 소결 온도가 $800^{\circ}C$에서 $1,100^{\circ}C$로 증가함에 따라 모든 발광 스펙트럼의 세기는 순차적으로 증가함을 나타내었다. Tb3+가 도핑된 CaSiO4 형광체 분말의 경우에 관측된 발광 스펙트럼은 주 피크인 549 nm를 중심으로 하여 세기가 상대적으로 작은 493, 592, 626 nm의 피크들이 관측되었으며, 소결 온도가 증가함에 따라 전반적으로 발광 세기들이 증가하는 경향을 나타내었다. Sm3+가 도핑된 CaSiO4 형광체의 경우에, 발광 스펙트럼은 전형적인 Sm3+이온에 의한 전이 신호들이 605, 570, 653 nm에서 나타났다. 발광 스펙트럼의 세기는 소결 온도에 비례하여 증가하였다. Ce3+가 도핑된 경우에 발광 스펙트럼은 소결 온도에 관계없이 401 nm에서 관측되었으며, 소결 온도에 따라 발광 세기의 변화가 나타났다. 이 실험 결과로 부터, 합성시 적절한 소결 온도의 선택이 고발광 효율의 형광체를 제작하는데 있어서 매우 중요한 요소가 됨을 확인할 수 있었다.

  • We have grown D $y_{x}$B $i_{3-x}$F $e_{5}$ $O_{12}$ (x = 0.5,1.0, 1.5,2.0) magnetic garnet thin films upon $Al_2$O3i and GGG substrate using Pechini process. The annealing temperature to get single phase D $y_{x}$B $i_{3-x}$F $e_{5}$ $O_{12}$ garnet is dependent on substrate, i.e. the annealing temperature for GGG substrate il 5$0^{\circ}C$ lower than that for $Al_2$ $O_3$ substrate. The grains of garnet thin film grown on GGG (111) plane align along [111] direction, and in this case the hysteresis curve does not saturate up to H : 5000 Oe. We attribute this phenomenon to rotation magnetization process. The maximum amount of Bi substitution in polycrystalline D $y_{x}$B $i_{3-x}$F $e_{5}$ $O_{12}$ thin film prepared by Pechini process is restricted to 2.0 Bi atom/unit cell, and this value is less than that in single garnet crystall grown by LPE method.own by LPE method.ethod.

Determination of Thermoluminescence Properties of MgB4O7 Doped with Dy3+, La3+ and Ho3+ for a Light Tracer Application (비화공식 예광탄 응용을 위한 Dy3+, La3+ 그리고 Ho3+이 도핑된 MgB4O7의 열 발광 특성 분석)

  • Bullets flying with a light from the back are called "tracers". Tracers are ignited by the combustion gas of the propellant and emit bright light that allows the shooter to visually trace the flight path. Therefore, tracers mark the firing point for allies to assist shooters to hit target quickly and accurately. Conventional tracers are constructed with a mixture of an oxidizing agent, raw metal, and organic fuel. Upon ignition, the inside of the gun can be easily contaminated by the by-products, which can lead to firearm failure during long-term shooting. Moreover, there is a fire risk such as forest fires due to residual flames at impact site. Therefore, it is necessary to develop non-combustion type luminous material; however, this material must still use the heat generated from the propellant, so-called "thermoluminescence (TL)". This study aims to compare the TL emission of Dy3+, La3+ and Ho3+ doped MgB4O7 phosphors prepared by solid state reaction. The crystal structures of samples were determined by X-ray diffraction and matched with the standard pattern of MgB4O7. Luminescence of various doses (200 ~ 15,000 Gy) of gamma irradiated Dy3+, La3+ and Ho3+ (at different concentrations of 5, 10, 15 and 20 %) doped MgB4O7 were recorded using a luminance/color meter. The intensity of TL yellowish (CIE x = 0.401 ~ 0.486, y = 0.410 ~ 0.488) emission became stronger as the temperature increased and the total gamma-ray dose increased.

A Three-dimensional Magnetic Field Mapping System for Deflection Yoke of Cathode-Ray Tube

  • In this paper, we introduce an efficient three-dimensional magnetic field mapping system for a Deflection Yoke (DY) in Cathode-Ray Tube (CRT). A three-axis Hall probe mounted in a small cylindrical bar and three-stepping motors placed in a non-magnetic frame were utilized for the mapping. Prior to the mapping starts, the inner contour of DY was measured by a laser sensor to make a look-up table for inner shape of DY. Three-axis magnetic fields are then digitized by a three-dimensional Hall probe. The results of the mapping can be transformed into various output formats such as multi pole harmonics of magnetic fields. Field shape in one, two and three- dimensional spaces can also be displayed. In this paper, we present the features of this mapping device and some analysis results.

High Coercive Nd-Fe-B Sintered Magnets for High Temperature Application

  • Various sintered magnets containing $28{\sim}31\;wt%$ Nd and $0{\sim}7\;wt%$ Dy were evaluated for coercivity and irreversible flux loss as a preliminary study to develop highly-coercive, high-temperature magnets that can be applied for driving motors in a hybrid vehicle. The sintered magnets were prepared in sequence of strip casting, HD treatment, jet milling, magnetic field pressing, sintering and post-annealing. Increasing Dy content and adjusting post-annealing temperature monotonically increased coercivity of magnets from about 14 kOe to 30 kOe. A magnet containing 28 wt% Nd and 7 wt% Dy exhibits a $(BH)_{max}$+$_i{H_c}$ value of almost 64. This is very close to what the automobile industry considers as the minimum value (65) for a hybrid vehicle system. Moreover, irreversible flux loss of the magnet was about 3% at $200^{\circ}C$, which is well less than the allowable limit (5%) to a driving motor in hybrid vehicles.

  • 오픈 소스 유체역학 소프트웨어인 OpenFOAM은 다양한 유체 흐름에 적용 가능한 프로그램들로 구성되어 있다. 이 중 interFoam은 밀도가 다른 두 유체(i.e., 물, 공기) 간의 경계를 추적하는 기법을 기반으로 한 프로그램으로, 파랑의 거동 모의에 주로 쓰이고 있다. 파생형 프로그램으로는 동격자(dynamic mesh) 및 중첩 격자 기법(overset grid method)을 interFoam에 추가한 overInterDyMFoam이 있다. 두 기법을 사용하면 각각 여러 영역에서 유체흐름과 다중 물체 간의 상호작용을 효율적으로 모의할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 overInterDyMFoam을 사용하여 두 개 수문의 개방 움직임을 구현하고 생성된 파랑이 포말대(swash zone)에 접근하였을 때의 흐름 특성을 조사하였다. 수치모형실험 결과 수문 개방 속도가 댐 붕괴 파랑 흐름 전파속도에 영향을 미치는 사실을 발견하였다. 또한, 처오름과 처내림의 상호작용에 의한 난류 운동 특성을 조사하기 위해 수문 개방시간 간격을 0초~3초로 설정하였다. 수치모형실험 결과는 수리모형실험의 수면 변동 시계열과 속도 시계열 결과와 비교하여 모형의 정확성이 검증되었다.

Enzymatic Deacetylation of Chitin by Extracellular Chitin Deacetylase from a Newly Screened Mortierella sp. DY-52

  • Among more than a hundred colonies of fungi isolated from soil samples, DY-52 has been screened as an extracellular chitin deacetylase (CDA) producer. The isolate was further identified as Mortierella sp., based on the morphological properties and the nucleotide sequence of its 18S rRNA gene. The fungus exhibited maximal growth in yeast peptone glucose (YPD) liquid medium containing 2% of glucose at pH 5.0 and $28^{\circ}C$ with 150 rpm. The CDA activity of DY-52 was maximal (20 U/mg) on the 3rd day of culture in the same medium. The CDA was inducible by addition of glucose and chitin. The enzyme contained two isoforms of molecular mass 50 kDa and 59 kDa. This enzyme showed a maximal activity at pH 5.5 and $60^{\circ}C$. In addition, it had a pH stability range of 4.5-8.0 and a temperature stability range of $4-40^{\circ}C$. The enzyme was enhanced in the presence of $Co^{2+}$ and $Ca^{2+}$. Among various substrates tested, WSCT-50 (water-soluble chitin, degree of deacetylation 50%), glycol chitin, and crab chitosan (DD 71-88%) were deacetylated. Moreover, the CDA can handle N-acetylglucosamine oligomers $(GlcNAc)_{2-7}$.

Ferroelectric and Magnetic Properties of Dy and Co Co-Doped $BiFeO_3 $ Ceramics

  • Multiferroic materials have attracted much attention due to their fascinating fundamental physical properties and technological applications in magnetic/ferroelectric data-storage systems, quantum electromagnets, spintronics, and sensor devices. Among single-phase multiferroic materials, $BiFeO_3 $ is a typical multiferroic material with a room temperature magnetoelectric coupling in view of high magnetic-and ferroelectric-ordering temperatures (Neel temperature $T_N$~647 K and Curie temperature $T_C$~1,103 K). Rare-earth ion substitution at the Bi sties is very interesting, which induces suppressed volatility of Bi ion and improved ferroelectric properties. At the same time, Fe-site substitution with magnetic ions is also attracting, and the enhanced ferromagnetism was reported. In this study, $Bi_{1-x}Dy_xFe_{0.95}Co_{0.05}O_3$ (x=0, 0.05 and 0.1) bulk ceramic compounds were prepared by solid-state reaction and rapid sintering. High-purity $Bi_2O_3$, $Dy_2O_3$, $Fe_2O_3$ and $Co_3O_4$ powders with the stoichiometric proportions were mixed, and calcined at $500^{\circ}C$ or 24 h to produce $Bi_{1-x}Dy_xFe_{0.95}Co_{0.05}O_3$. The samples were immediately put into an oven, which was heated up to $800^{\circ}C$ nd sintered in air for 30 min. The crystalline structure of samples was investigated at room temperature by using a Rigaku Miniflex powder diffractometer. The field-dependent magnetization measurements were performed with a vibrating-sample magnetometer. The electric polarization was measured at room temperature by using a standard ferroelectric tester (RT66B, Radiant Technologies).

Mechanical Properties of Hot-Pressed SiC with Rare-Earth Oxide (희토류 산화물을 첨가한 일축가압소결 탄화규소의 기계적 특성)

  • Six different SiC ceramics with SiO2-Re2O3 (Re=Yb, Er, Y, Dy, Gd, Sm) as sintering additives have been fabricated by hot-pressing the SiC-Re2Si2O7 compositions at 1850$^{\circ}C$ for 2 hr under a pressure of 25 MPa. The room temperature strneth and the fracture toughness of the hot-pressed ceramics were characterized and compared with those of the ceramics sintered with YAG (Y3Al5O12). Five SiC ceramics (Re=Yb, Er, Y, Dy, Gd) investigated herein showed sintered densities higher than 94% of theoretical. Tthe SiC-Re2Si2O7 compositions showed lower strength and comparable toughness to those from SiC-YAG composition, owing to the chemical reaction between SiO2 and SiC during sintering. SiC ceramics fabricated from a SiC-Y2Si2O7 composition showed the best mechanical properties of 490 MPa and 4.8 MPa$.$m1/2 among the compositions investigated herein.

Adsorption and Separation of U (VI), Co (II), and Dy (III) Metal Ions on Crown Synthetic Resin

  • Synthetic resins were combined 1-aza-12-crown-4 macrocyclic ligand with styrene divinylbenzene copolymer having 1%, 2%, 8%, and 16% crosslink by a substitution reaction. These synthetic resins were confirmed by chlorine content, elementary analysis, SEM, surface area, and IR-spectrum. As the results of the effects of pH, crosslink of synthetic resin, and dielectric constant of a solvent on metal ion adsorption for resin adsorbent, the metal ions showed high adsorption at pH 3 or over. Adsorption selectivity for the resin in ethanol solvent was the order of uranium ($UO_2{^{2+}}$) > cobalt ($Co^{2+}$) > dysprosium ($Dy^{3+}$) ion, adsorbability of the metal ion was the crosslink in order of 1%, 2%, 8%, and 16% and it was increased with the lower dielectric constant. In addition, theses metal ions could be separated in the column with 1% crosslink resin by using nitric acid (pH 2.0) as an eluent.
