  • Environmental measurements were made in 10 broiler confinement houses in order to characterize dust contaminants. Particles were collected by filters on nine stages Anderson Air Sampler, The obtained results were summarized as follows ; 1. The concentrations of the total suspended particles(TSP) were 7.584 mg/$m_3$~11.589mg/$m_3$ in 10 day old broiler houses and 15.836 mg/$m_3$~22.471 mg/$m_3$ in 30 day old broiler houses. 2. The concentrations of the coarse particles were 4.974 mg/$m_3$~18.981 mg/$m_3$ in 10 broiler confinement houses. Therefore, it was found that the coarse particles contributed to TSP between 65.6% and 85.0%. 3. The dust levels were higher in 30 day old broiler houses with TSP averaging about 19.341 mg/$m_3$ than 9.491 mg/$m_3$ in 10 day old broiler houses. In view of the above results , It was concluded that domestic broiler houses need artificial ventilation system.

  • Dust phenomenon is a critical thing in the East Asian countries. However, it is quite recent that Asian dust has drawn much attention and the scientific investigation of dust particles began. In this study, the recognition for Asian-dust in Northeast Asia region was analyzed. The survey results show that the people generally recognize the origins and seriousness of Asian dust and understand the difficulty in solving the dust related problems. However, approaches to figure out Asian dust have many difficulties and limits in scientific, economic and political points of view and more detailed road map is needed based on government policy.

  • To characterize airborne particulate carbon and its temporal variation in the heavily industrialized metropolitan city, Seoul in South Korea, aerosol sampling was performed from 1986 to 1996. Correlation coefficients of elemental carbon (EC) and organic carbon (OC) with mass concentration of fine particles ($\underline{\leq}$2.1 ${\mu}m$) are 0.73 and 0.51, respectively. EC concentrations of the fine particle mode are 10.1, 5.9, 4.5, and 7.4 ${\mu}g\;m^{-3}$ in winter, spring, summer, and autumn, respectively. On the other hand, OC concentration shows maximum value in winter and followed by autumn, summer, and spring. A seasonal peak in the ratio of OC to EC in fine particles was observed during the summer photochemical season from June to August. Concentrations of EC and OC in Asian dust storm events are generally higher than in non- Asian dust storm events except in 1990. The difference of EC concentrations between Asian dust storm periods and non-Asian dust storm periods are much larger than those of OC concentrations. There are slight increases of EC concentration between 1987 and 1990 and a gradual decrease between 1990 and 1996.

  • The 2007 event occurred at 17P/Holmes is known as the most energetic cometary outburst in the history of modern astronomical observations. At this conference, we report our new observation of the comet one orbital period after the event. We thus made the observation of 17P/Holmes in 2014 September using the Kiso Wide Field Camera (KWFC) attached to the 105 cm Schmidt telescope at the Kiso Observatory. It is known that dust particles are thought to converge on the orbital plane of the parent body at the opposite end of the dust ejection viewed from the Sun. Similar phenomenon occurs when dust particles complete one orbital revolution (what we call, neck-line structures). We succeeded in the detection of the dust ejecta of the 2007 outburst by means of the neck-line. With the image, we plan to discuss the ejection velocity and the total mass of the ejecta to deepen our understanding of the historical event.

  • Recently, there has been much research on the effect of fine dust on human body with increasing interest in the fine dust. Thermal power plant, which is considered as one of the main sources of fine dust, is reported to be responsible for 14% of the total amount of domestic fine dust in the Republic of Korea. Therefore, dust collecting devices in the thermal power plant need to be improved. In this study, the electrostatic precipitator (ESP) was considered to substitute for a mist eliminator used in flue gas desulfurization facility. By considering real situation in the flue gas desulfurization facility, the collection efficiency of the ESP was evaluated by using the sprayed limestone slurry particles. The collection efficiency of the ESP was higher than that of the mist eliminator, showing the possibility of replacing the mist eliminator with the ESP in flue gas desulfurization facility.

  • The heavy metal of suspended particulates with human health has long been studied in environmental interest concerned. This study was intended to identify harmful heavy metals of the ambient air borne dusts which were related with the respirable sizes in the aerodynamics. Two sampling sites were selected comparatively; one was in the Shinchon area, which is the commercial district with heavy traffic and the other site was in the Bulgwang area which is residential area. The supended particulates were sampled by high volume air sample with 6 cascade impactor stages. The heavy metals in terms of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Se, V and Zn were determined by stomic absorption spectrometry or inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry. The samples weretaken bimothly for seven consecutive days from May 1987 to March 1988. The annual average concentration of the respirable suspended dust of which diameter is less than 10$\mum$ was 152.59 $\mug/m^3$ of the Shinchon air samples; the respirable dust was equivalent to approximately 85% of the total suspended particulates. The annual average concentration of the respirable suspended dust of the Bulgwang air samples was 112.56 $\mug/m^3$; that was approximately 86% of the total suspended particulates. The concentration of heavy metals was investigated in relation to the particle size. The concentration of Cr, Fe, Mn and V were tended to be much more in the coarse particles than in the fine particles. Cd and Pb in the fine particles were more than in the coarse particles. In the partial correlation coefficients; in the Shinchon area, high correlations among Fe, Se and Mn were determined; it is assumed that those sources would be originated from coal, gasolineand diesel. In Bulgwang area, would be high correlation among Fe, Se, Hg and Mn considered to be originated from coal, Bunker-C and heavy oil as well. From the above results, the hazardous heavy merals in air should be measured and controlled in originally their sources.

  • Traditionally, so-called "industrial waste gases", such ad exhaust from boilers at industrial installations and a large quantity of soot discharged from power station, before their release into the atmosphere, have been on occasion subjected to an air cleaning process to remove fine particles that may pollute the atmosphere (such as mist and dust containing various powdery or oily substances and moisture from industrial waste gases). The release of industrial waste gases containing these particles directly into the atmosphere poses a serious threat to the earth environment; and recovery of these noxious substances is required by law in some countries and local governments. in urban areas, air pollution from automobile exhaust and others creates a serious condition. Some homes are equipped with and use indoor air purifiers. In many of the kitchens of restaurants, smoke generated during cooking and otherwise contaminated air are cleansed by air purifiers before being released outside or recycled inside. For the dust collecting devices to recover the fine particles contained in contaminated air, the cause for air pollution and how to purify air, many types based on various principles are known. Specifically, classified based on theories of particle collection, filtration, gravity, inertia, centrifugation, electricity, and cleaning types are cited as available processes. Among them, an appropriate type is selected according to the size or type of fine particles to be collected and conditions for installation. For the efficiency of dust collection, a filtration system (by using bag filters and others) and electric system are particularly outstanding and are therefore used widely in various areas of industry. In this research, rotary type high performance oil mist and smoke collecting system with self auto cleaning device equipped with the cleaning fluid spraying section is investigated.

  • We revisited a recent dust emission observed at a main-belt asteroid P/2010 A2 in terms of dynamical properties of dust particles and large fragments. This is a continued research that we made a presentation at the Korean Astronomical Society 2016 Spring Meeting, but we have strengthened the dynamical analysis of the ejecta to afford the conclusive evidence for the enigmatic phenomenon. We thus constructed a model to reproduce the morphology of the dust cloud based on the dust dynamics, and succeeded in reproducing the observed morphologies in different epochs over several years. For further analysis, we reconstructed the proper motion of large fragments with respect to the dust emission source estimated from our dust model. We found that (i) the dust cloud morphologies and (ii) observed trajectories of fragments are reasonably explained only when we assumed that both were ejected from a position where no object was detected from any observations. This result suggests that the original body was shattered by an impact, leaving only debris into space. In this presentation, we will compare our results with impact laboratory studies and provide an impact interpretation of the P/2010 A2 activity.

  • In order to examine the variation characteristics of chemical compositions in relation to the inflow pathways of Asian dust, $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ aerosols were collected at Gosan site of Jeju Island during the Asian dust days between 2010 and 2015, and their chemical compositions were analyzed. The mean mass concentrations of $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ during Asian dust days were $130.0{\pm}90.2$ and $38.2{\pm}24.7{\mu}g/m^3$, respectively. The composition ratios of major secondary pollutants ($nss-SO_4{^{2-}}$, $NH_4{^+}$, $NO_3{^-}$) were high as 53.7 % for $PM_{10-2.5}$ and 90.6 % for $PM_{2.5}$. When the Asian dusts had been transported to the Korean Peninsula via Loess Plateau of central China, the concentrations of $nss-Ca^{2+}$, $NH_4{^+}$, $nss-SO_4{^{2-}}$, and $NO_3{^-}$ increased more noticeably. Whereas in case when the inflow pathways of Asian dust had been through the Bohai bay, the concentrations of the crustal species such as Al, Fe, and Ca were relatively high in coarse particles. The atmospheric aerosols were acidified largely by sulfuric and nitric acids. They were neutralized mainly by calcium carbonate in coarse particle mode passed through Manchuria area, but by ammonia in fine particle mode passed through Loess plateau and Bohai bay. Ammonium salts are assumed to exist as ammonium sulfate and ammonium nitrate in coarse particles, but mostly as ammonium sulfate in fine particles.

  • Recently, functional clothes that can reduce deposition and/or penetration of fine dust have been developed. However, there are no methods to quantitatively evaluate the performance of these clothes. In this study, we developed a method to contaminate a fabric using fine dust and established an approach to quantitatively assess the degree of particle contamination on the fabric surface. Silicate powder was chosen as the particle to simulate fine dust because silicate particles are fluorescent under UV light; therefore, they can be distinguished from any color of non-fluorescent fabric surface. A camera with a high-resolution lens system was used to scan the surface of the contaminated fabric surface, and the degree of particle contamination of the fabric surface was analyzed in terms of the pixels corresponding to the area of the fabric surface contaminated by silicate particles. Finished or unfinished nylon fabrics as well as cotton fabrics were contaminated with silicate particles, and their surfaces were scanned using the established camera. The proposed assessment method was found to be useful for quantitatively comparing the degree of particle contamination of the fabrics.
