A Study on the Baroque Characteristics Expressed in Architecture by Richard Meier (리처드 마이어 건축에 표현된 바로크적 특성 연구)

  • Baroque is fundamentally in contrast with renaissance style classicism, which attempted to fix a world view itself as the value of perpetuity. Furthermore, it is interpreted as a topic of incompletion or transformation that is not defined or is not exemplary and which may be enjoyed by people in the classical life, which requires a microscopic concept in contrast with dualism, the central axis of western civilization, namely, rational lucidity. Also, such characteristics are estimated to serve as a lubricant in life while going beyond the formal aesthetic level of art even from a contemporary perspective, and to play a productive role and to have potential. Consequently, this paper assumed that the concepts expressed by the 20th century US contemporary architect Richard Meier of a complex space, namely architectural formative vocabularies such as overlapping, interpenetration, collision, and collage style mixture created by a layered structure, in his architecture are in common with the double surface technique and juxtaposition of a flat structure of Baroque architecture. Then, the paper analyzed and considered the characteristics. The paper considered the following two issues: Such Baroque style formal principle is reinterpreted against a backdrop in which his architectural flow based on the domino theory of Le Corbusier became established as his own unique architectural feature, and it may be proposed as one big flow that enables us to seek again modernistic architecture that attempts to make an architectural space absolute as an atypical formal contour.

Consciousness, Conceivability and Zombie (의식, 상상가능성, 좀비)

  • Consciousness dualists argue that materialism is false because of the conceivability of zombie which has no consciousness. The argument from conceivability applies to consciousness asymmetrically with $Water=H_2O$ whose identity was already established. However I think that argument is unsound because asymmetric application Is implausible. First, the metaphysical sap between water and $H_2O$ must be filled not by conceptual analysis, but by empirical methods: the neuroscientific developments will fill the metaphysical gap of consciousness. Second, consciousness dualists said it is illusion when we seem to conceive of $H_2O$ without water, but it is not illusion when we conceive the tumble with no consciousness. I argue it is also illusion in the case of latter. So two cases must be concerned equally.

Perspectives of Game in Terms of Interactivity between Game Texts and Players (게임 텍스트와 플레이어의 인터랙티브적 관점에서 본 게임의 시점)

  • This article focuses on perspectives of game in terms of interactivity between game texts and players. There are many points of view which have been discussed, such as first person point of view, third person point of view, top-down point of view, side-view point of view, quarter-view point of view, and isometric point of view, but they are too insufficient to fully explain the perspectives of game from the viewpoint of the interactivity. This paper examines the function of player and game manufacturer as implied authors on interactive point of view, and discusses the perspectives of game through a sense of distance between players as implied author and player characters.

Exploring a New Planning Paradigm for Urban Landscape in Korea : An Aesthetic Approach (한국 도시경관의 새로운 계획 파라다임 -미학적 사고의 가능성 모색)

  • This paper is to explore a new planning paradigm for urban landscape-not a new paradigm for urban landscape planning- in the light of environmental aesthetics. This is an endeavor to construct an alternative to the philosophical absence in the landscape profession. The landscape has been conceived of visual -oriented urban scene, and this notion is one of consequences of subject-object dualism in Western modernity project. In contrast with this convention, the authors consider urban landscape as the aesthetic field in which an experience of urban landscape actually works in human ordinary life and experience. To acquire an aestetic experience in this aesthetic field, we need to replace the doctrine of disinterestedness with engagement and contemplation with participation. This concept of participatory engagement with landscape can be translated in specific and concrete ways into urban landscape planning, replacing the traditional panoramic landscape with engaged landscape. The authors approach the urban landscape from the vantage point of an aesthetics of engagement by developing the four environmental situations : the sailing ship, the circus, the cathedral, and the sunset. They may serve as useful guides in cultivating and beautiful urban landscape to replace the forces of vulgarity and monotony that depress the modern city. On the Meaning of 'Activity' in Mathematical Cognition (수학적 인식에서 '활동'이 갖는 의미에 대한 고찰)

  • In this study, I consider the meaning of activity as the source of mathematical knowledge. Mind-body dualism of Descartes which understands that knowledge precedes activity is somewhat overcomed by Ryle who understands that knowledge and activity are two sides of the same coin. But his discussion cannot offer the explanation about the foundation of rightness or the development of rules which can be expressed propriety of activity or rationality. Contrary to these views, Piaget solve this problem by the reasonability of 'the whole system of activity'. The theory of Dewey can be evaluated as an origin of activism of Piaget. Piaget considers knowledge as the system of activity itself, whereas Dewey considers knowledge as 'the result of activity'. This view of Dewey is related to the view of pragmatism which considers 'practice' is more important than 'theory'. The nature of 'activity' in this study has to be understanded as the interaction or the relation between the subject and the object. If we understand activity like this, we can explain that the whole structure of activity has the 'wholeness' that cannot be simply restored to the sum total of 'parts' and the new structure is a self-regulative transformation system which includes former structure continuously.

  • Oriental medicine which is based on internal activeness has constantly been developed for over thousands years and during that time it has encountered Western medicine that has the different system. Because of a lot of different viewpoints of how to understand human and nature, there exist lots of problems to cope with for the integration of two medicines as follows: (1) Oriental medicine regards each person as a cosmos in miniature but Western medicine is based on dualism, substantialism and mechanism. (2) Oriental medicine thinks much of totality as a cosmos in a miniature but Western medicine investigates individual structure and function of human organ and system. (3) Oriental medicine considers that organs are the core of the Oriental medical physiology and makes much account of their functions and their relationships with fundamental texture, but Western medicine gives much emphasis on the structure than functions. Despite of these differences, Oriental medicine and Western medicine should develop mutual understanding and this will facilitate the achievement of the third medicine that is suitable for the primary object of medicine that is to enhance human health and cure diseases.

Rorty's Neo-Pragmaticism and its Implications on Knowledge Organization System Development (로티의 신실용주의와 정보조직 시스템 설계의 의미)

  • The study acknowledges the importance of philosophical basis such as paradigms and epistemology in knowledge organization system development. The study aims at providing implications of Rorty's neo-pragmatism on knowledge organization system development. The study discussed Rorty's main concepts - Anti-Dualism, Languages, Ethnocentrism, and Solidarity, and further how these elements are utilized in system design. The study focuses on philosophical basis, knowledge organization system development approach, and methodology. It has values in that it provides implications for other philosophical discussions to be applicable to knowledge organization.

  • Modern architecture's optical mechanism focused on Ocuularcentrism neglects the tactility of vision and tends to eliminate the optical and tactile dualism of traditional spaces by representing spaces and surfaces that are abstract and cold-hearted. In other words, all sensory experiences, except for visual experiences, are eliminated to make it impossible to create the substantial core of architecture that combines time, image, and surface textures. The fast-changing social trends, the emergence of new materials and technologies, and the corresponding development of various types of media since the Industrial Revolution have changed the paradigm of human perception and representation. With the development of media, other sensory experiences besides visual experience have been stressed and human perception has converted from single perspective to complex perspective. In result, new sensory items, such as visual tactility, have replaced the traditional vision-centered hierarchy. The composition of architectural surfaces has represented the functional and commercial needs of technology, structure, as well as the socio-cultural needs of the community. In contemporary times, it is being changed and developed by the new tactility and the corresponding expression of modern architecture. Based on the visual representation of tactility of architectural surface, this study used a composition of surface that combines various events, meanings, and senses to examine how architecture can mediate and reproduce viewers' visual experiences and discover the existential relationship between architecture and men.

Digital Entrepreneurship in Indonesia: A Human Capital Perspective

  • Digital technology has become a new economic and social force, reshaping traditional business models, strategies, structures, and processes. This is a challenge for human capital to develop continuously in this dynamic era; one of the solutions is digital entrepreneurship. Digital entrepreneurship focuses on creating new ventures and transforming existing businesses by developing novel digital technologies or novel usage. Further, digital technology has also enabled the growth of the sharing economy, linking owners and users, and disrupting the previous dualism of businesses and customers. This paper provides a novel contribution regarding the emerging concept of Digital Entrepreneurship. Based on a qualitative literature review and interview with university staff, lecturers, and students in four large public and private universities in West Java and DIY Province, an interpretative framework for Digital Entrepreneurship has been proposed, which comprises of the following components: motivation (the rationale for the adoption of digital technology for academic entrepreneurship), stakeholders (the stakeholders involved through digital technology to achieve the academic entrepreneurship goal), process (the processes of academic entrepreneurship supported by digital technologies), and business form (the emerging forms of digital academic entrepreneurship). This research also shows several alternative government policies to improve digital entrepreneurship in the academic environment.

Peasant Societies in Colonial East Asia: The Universality and Particularity of Southeast Asia and Northeast Asia (식민시대 동아시아의 소농사회: 동남아와 동북아의 보편성과 특수성)

  • The peasant societies of East Asia had been challenged by capitalist plantation since colonization and by socialist collectivization since decolonization. The former was decisively weakened due to the crisis of the capitalist system in the 1930s and the collapse of the colonial order in the 1940s; The latter was thoroughly discredited due to the reform of the socialist system in the 1980s and the end of the Cold War in the 1990s. The failure of the two epochal challenges demonstrates the historical sustainability of peasant societies in East Asia. Their survival represents the universality of Northeast and Southeast Asia, which can be ascribed to the ecological environment and production process of wet-rice agriculture for their common staple food. In spite of their diverse differences, indeed, peasant societies in colonial East Asia shared profound similarities in their basic motivations (morality-rationality), central tendencies (involution - polarization), structural outcomes (dualism - pluralism), and future prospects (survival-extinction).
