Purpose: This study aims to suggest clinical basis of physical therapy to skeletal system complication in type II diabetic patients through a variety of analysis methods. Methods: 75 subjects(type II diabetic patients; age from 40 to 80) of this study were participated in BMD(Bone Mineral Density) and Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry, blood test to their skeletal system. Results: Incidence of osteopenea was higher than normal group as women(91.2%) and men(53.5%) in diabetes group. However, women were showed no significantly difference in comparison group. Above age 60(in diabetes group; men and women) showed to highly incidence of osteopenea as well as significantly difference in osteopenea(peripheral neuropathy). As a result of analyzing blood through presence and absence of osteopenea in diabetes group, men were showed significantly difference in DPD/creatinine ratio and women were showed significantly difference in Alkaline phosphatase, Corrected Calcium. Conclusion: This study shows that decreased BMD and increased osteopenea through type II diabetes. Women were particularly lower BMD and higher incidence of osteopenea than men and men influence of type II diabetes on change of BMD was greater than women.
This study was performed to investigate the relationships among bone mineral densities (BMD), anthropometric data and lifestyle factors in the elderly. Subjects included 138 elderly (male: 38, female: 100) aged over 65 years, who were home-(dwelling in a low-income area of Puchon City. The BMDs of the lumbar spines (LS), femoral necks (FN), Ward′s triangles (WT) and trochanters (TC) were measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. The females showed significantly lower BMDs in four sites (p < 0.0001) . The elderly aged over 75 revealed significantly more decreased femoral BMDs than the elderly aged 65 to 74. Female with BMIs of 20 to 25, showed significantly higher BMDs in LS, FN and trochanter than those with BMIs of less than 20. However, males displayed significantly higher BMDs in only LS with increasing BMIs. THe BMDs of LS correlated with weights (r = 0.543, p < 0.001), heights (r = 0.477, p < 0.001), upper arm circumferences (r=0.368, p < 0.01), waist circumferences (r=0.367, p < 0.001), subscapular skinfold thicknesses (r=0.363, p < 0.001) and flip circumferences (r=0.231, p < 0.01). Non-smokers and non-drinkers shelved significantly higher BMDs in trochanters only in the case of the males. Female milk-drinkers showed significantly elevated LS BMDs. Eighteen percent of the males were assessed as having osteoporosis, as compared to fifty percent of the females. Ninety-three percent of the females and 81.6% of the males responded that they often or always had "difficulty in standing for a long time".
The purpose of present study was to assess the change of bone mineral density(BMD) and the influences of anthroopometric indices and body composition on BMD in Korean women in Taegu. Subjects were 242 healthy female in the range of 7-67 years old, were divided into 4 age groups in order to assess the influence o factors on BMD according to age. Body composition and BMD measurements of lumbar spine, femur(neck, ward's triangle, trochanter) and total body were performed by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. The analysis indicated that BMD of most region was positively related to body weight, BMI in all groups 4(50-67years), and closely related to femurs than lumbar spine. This study found correlations between BMD and both total fat body mass and total lean body mass in group 1, 2, 3, and correlations between BMD and only total fat body mass and in group 4. But on regression models the most significant prediction of BMD throughout the skeleton was total lean body mass in group 1(7-16years)and 2(17-34years, and total fat body mass in group 3 and 4. It is concluded that the our data can be used to screen early women of low bone mass. This study confirms that one of the most effective way to prevent osteoporosis and the fractures is to maximize peak bone mass in early life and to minimize bone loss through maintaining adequate weight.

Purpose : This study was carried out to evaluate correlation between Bone Mineral Density(BMD) and degenerative lumbar disease in postmenopausal low back pain patients. Methods : 69 postmenopausal patients with low back pain were examined. Magnetic resonance imaging was performed to evaluate degenerative lumbar disease and bone mineral density of lumbar spine was measured by Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. Data were analyzed by Pearson's Linear Correlation Coefficient. Results : In postmenopausal patients with low back pain, BMD(T-score, Z-score) had negative correlation with the grade of intervertebral disc herniation and positive correlation with weight. Other lumbar diseases including Spinal stenosis, Spondylolisthesis and Facet joint arthrosis didn't have significant correlation with BMD. Conclusion : In postmenopausal patients with low back pain, BMD(T-score, Z-score) had inverse relationship with the grade of intervertebral disc herniation.
Purpose : This study was conducted to compare the radiomorphometric indices of the mandible on panoramic radiographs among three groups of normal, osteopenia and osteoporosis and to determine whether panoramic indices have validity in predicting osteoporotic risk. Materials and Methods: Ninty-four postmenupausal women aged 42-72 years (mean 62±7.5) were examined using dual energy X-ray absorptionmetry (DEXA) of the lumbar and classified into three groups by WHO classification. Panoramic mandibular index (PMI), mandibular cortical thickness (Mental index (MI), Antegonial index (AI), Gonial index (G!)) and the mandibular cortical index (MCI) were measured bilaterally on panoramic radiographs and analyzed. Results: There were signigicant differences among normal, osteopenic and osteoporoti groups in PMI (I), PMI (S), MI, AI, GI and MCI. The sensitivities of the MCI (93%) and the combination index of MCI and MI (90%) in diagnosing osteopenic/osteoporotic cases were high. Conclusion: The widths and shapes of the mandibular cortical bone on panoramic radiography may highly reflect the systemic osteopenic/osteoporotic conditions of the patients.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate bone density and risk factors related to osteopenia to unmarried young adult women. Methods: The subjects consisted of 125 female college students. SPSS 12.0 program was used for the data analysis with t-test, ${\chi}^2-test$. The BMD of the calcaneus and body mass index (BMI) were measured with peripheral dual energy X-ray absorptionmetry. Other physical characteristics were measured with a scale and questionnaires. Results: The general characteristics of these people showed that the average age was 22.1 years old and that the average BMI was 20.8. The mean of BMD was normal, but 24.8% were osteopenia, 75.2% were normal. In the normal and osteopenia groups, there were significant differences in the status of the BMD according to age, height, weight, BMI, regular exercise, house chores, and the experiences of being on a diet. Conclusion: Women in their twenties had some osteoporosis risk, but they can change their BMD by doing regular exercise and by eating food to peak bone mass. For building peak bone mass, they need take exercise programs and education programs to prevent osteoporosis and follow-up care.
To determine whether personal history of lactation in premenopausal women influence bone mineral density, a cross-sectional study was conducted. One hundred eighty-four premenopausal women were selected from women who had been checked for bone mineral density by dual energy x-ray absortiometry in lumbar spine, femoral neck, Ward's triangle, and trochanteric site at general hospitals in Seoul and Pusan. They completed a questionnaire including life style factors and reproductive history. In the data analysis, Pearson correlation coefficients were used to test any association between individual variables and bone mineral density and a statistical comparisons between long term lactation(>24 months) and short term lactation(<24 months) were made by one way analysis of covariance. The results were summarized as follows: 1) There was no significant difference in the bone mineral density of the lumbar vertebrae in premenopausal women between the long term lactation group(>24months) and the short term lactation group(<24months). 2) There was no significant difference in the bone mineral density of the femur neck, Ward's triangle, and trochanteric site in premenopausal women between the long term lactation group (>24months) and the short term lactation group (<24months). Considering these results, we suggest prospective studies that measure bone mineral density before and after, in addition to those during lactation. We also suggest the further study with premenopausal women less than 35 who have achieved peak adult bone mass.

Purpose: This study was to identify the influencing factors in postmenopausal women's bone mineral density (BMD). Method: The sample for the study was 107 postmenopausal women who took the BMD test. For BMD measurement, lumbar spine BMD(L2-5) was measured by Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry(DEXA). Data was collected by questionnaires on the selected variables such as reproductive factors and life style factors. Result: In reproductive factors, parity shows significant differences with BMD (F=4.16, p=.02). In life style factors, diet (F=3.01, p=.05) and exercise (F=7.39, p=.00) show significant differences with BMD. Excercise, diet and parity accounted for 42.0% of the influencing factors in Postmenopausal Women's Bone Mineral Density. Conclusion: The influencing factors in postmenopausal women's bone mineral density were excercise, diet and parity. In this paper, it is suggested that the influence of reproductive and life style factors in postmenopausal women's BMD should be studied by long term and needs repeated research. This study can be used as foundation material for nursing education program development for osteoporosis prevention and improvement.
Purpose: To evaluate physical characteristics, lifestyle related to bone-health, and bone mineral density (BMD) in mothers and their daughters and to determine the predictors of BMD. Method: BMDs at the forearm, lumbar spine, and femur were measured in 101 healthy, mother-daughter pairs by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. Mother-daughter differences between general characteristics, means for BMDs were assessed by ${\chi}^2$-test, t-tests. Multiple regression analyses were used to identify predictors of BMD in each group. Results: Mothers had significantly higher BMD than their daughters at forearm, lumbar spine, and femur. The predictors of mothers' BMDs were body weight, body mass index (BMI) and percentage body fat, explaining 5.1~31.6% of the variation in BMDs. BMI, percentage body fat and their mother's BMD of the corresponding site bone were predictors in daughters, explaining 17.5~31.6% of the variations in BMDs. Conclusion: These results indicate the importance of weight on bone that the BMDs seems to be related to fat free mass both in young-adult daughters and in middle aged mothers. These also suggest the importance ofintervention for the development of BMD in daughter of mother with low BMD.
