  • This study was performed to test the combustive properties of Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) specimens treated with piperazinomethyl-bis-phosphonic acid (PIPEABP), methylpiperazinomethyl-bis-phosphonic acid (MPIPEABP), and N,N-dimethylethylenediaminomethyl-bis-phosphonic acid (MDEDAP). MDF Plates were painted in three times with 15 wt% solution of the alkylenediaminoalkyl-bis-phosphonic acids at the room temperature, respectively. After drying specimen treated with chemicals, combustive properties were examined by the cone calorimeter (ISO 5660-1). It was indicated that the specimens treated with chemicals showed the later time to peak mass loss rate ($TMLR_{peak}$) = (340475) s than that of virgin plate by reducing the burning rate. In adition, the specimens treated with chemicals showed the higher $CO_{mean}$ production (0.0883~0.0963) kg/kg than that of virgin plate. Especially, the specimens treated with chemicals showed the higher mean smoke extinction area ($SEA_{mean}$) ($5m^2/kg{\sim}21.5m^2/kg$) than that of virgin plate. Thus, It is supposed that the combustion-retardation properties were improved by the partial due to the treated alkylenediaminoalkyl-bis-phosphonic acids in the virgin MDF Plate. However, It gave a negative effect on smoke reduction.

  • Four kinds of new piperazinomethyl-bis-phosphonic acid $M^{n+}$ ($PIPEABPM^{n+}$) were synthesized and their combustive properties of Pinus rigida plates treated with $PIPEABPM^{n+}$ were tested. Pinus rigida specimens were painted in three times with 15 wt% $PIPEABPM^{n+}$solutions at the room temperature. After drying specimen treated with chemicals, com-bustive properties were examined by the cone calorimeter (ISO 5660-1). As a result, the combustion-retardation proper-ties were increased by due to the treated $PIPEABPM^{n+}$ solutions in the virgin pinus rigida. Especially, the specimens treated with $PIPEABPM^{n+}$ showed both the lower peak heat release rate ($HRR_{peak}$) (162.02~145.36) s and total heat release rate (THRR) (73.0~67.4) $MJ/m^2$ than those of virgin piperazinomethyl-bis-phosphonic acid (PIPEABP)-plate. Compared with virgin PIPEABP-plate, the specimens treated with the $PIPEABPM^{n+}$ showed low combustive properties. However the specimens treated with $PIPEABPM^{n+}$ showed both the shorter time to ignition (TTI) (67~23) s and the time to flameout (Tf) (472~433) s than those of virgin PIPEABP-plate by increasing the thermal conductivity.

Pinus rigida Plates were painted in three times with 15 wt% alkylenedi-aminoalkyl-bis-phosphonic acid solutions at the room temperature. After drying specimen treated with chemicals, combustive properties were examined by the cone calorimeter (ISO 5660-1). It was indicated that the specimens treated with chemicals showed the later time to peak mass loss rate ($TMLR_{peak}$) = (315~420) s than that of virgin plate by reduc-ing the burning rate except for $TPMR_{peak}$ (280 s) treated with DMDAP. In adition, the specimens treated with chemicals showed both the higher total smoke release rate (TSRR) (407.3~902.0) $m^2/m^2$ and $CO_{mean}$ production (407.3~902.0) $m^2/m^2$ than those of virgin plate. Especially, for the specimens treated with PIPEABP, 1st-smoke production rate (1st-SPR) (0.1250~0.1297) g/s was lower than that of virgin plate, while the 2nd-SPR (0.183 g/s) was higher. Thus, It is supposed that the combustion-retardation properties were improved by the partial due to the treated alkylenediaminoalkyl-bis-phos-phonic acids in the virgin Pinus rigida.

  • Locust bean gum (LBG)-based edible film was prepared, and opacity, water vapor permeability (WVP), tensile strength (TS) and elongation (E) of the film were measured. Opacity values of the film was a little higher than that of other transparent films. WVP decreased as LBG concentration decreased. Plasticizers and drying temperature didn't seem to influence WVP. WVP of the film increased greatly at 85% RH as compared to that of 0% RH. WVP of the film seemed to increase linearly with thickness of the film. But WVP of the film was lower those of other edible films. TS increased with increase of LBG concentration, and decreased with increase of glycerol concentration. E decreased with increase of LBG concentration, and increased with increase of sorbitol concentratin. LBG-based composite films were prepared by adding agarose, k-carrageenan or xanthan gum. TS and E of the composite film with addition of k-carrageenan increased.

  • The cracks in the pavements result from drying shrinkage, temperature change, repeated traffic loadings and so on. The reduction of soil support, spatting and many local failures are caused by water and incompressible foreign materials infiltrated into the cracks. In order to reduce this kind of problems the crack width must be controlled and managed by the accurate measurement. The current method is a visual survey using a microscope, which requires traffic blocking. The purpose of this study is to find the best condition to measure accurate crack width using automated pavement condition survey equipment running at the similar speed as other vehicles. In this study pavement surfaces are filmed on an enlarged scale by the camera with a zoom lens, and then the proper focal distance is determined according to the crack width through a pilot survey. The conditions for measurement of the accurate crack width using the image processing technique are suggested by comparing crack widths surveyed using a microscope in the field with those computed by various factors in the image processing program, STADI-2. In conclusion, the camera with a focal distance of 75m could detect crack range of 0.5mm$\sim$1.2mm In width with an accuracy of 80% for CRCP. The camera with a focal distance of 12.5mm could detect crack range of 1.8mm$\sim$3.3mm in width with an accuracy of 90% for asphalt pavement.

  • The preservative effect of chitosan film packing on quality of lightly-salted and dried horse mackerel was studied. In preparation of chitosan film, blue crab shell chitosan was dissolved in dilute acetic acid$(1.0\%,\;v/v)$, filtered, and spreaded on plastic plate and dried at $50\pm2^{\circ}C$. The chitosan film thus obtained was neutralized with 1.0N NaOH for 2 hrs and dried at room temperature after washing several times with distilled water. The lightly-salted and dried horse mackerel product was prepared by drying for 4 hrs at $40\pm2^{\circ}C$ in hot air dryer after packing with the chitosan film. During storage at $5.0\pm0.5^{\circ}C$, moisture content of the product was higher than that of the reference, but contents of VBN(volatile basic nitrogen) , amino nitrogen, and TMA of the product on dry basis were lower than those of the reference. Viable cell count, TBA value, and peroxide value of the product were also lower than those of the reference. Judging from the result of sensory evaluation, the chitosan film packing in the storage of lightly-salted and dried horse mackerel was remarkably elongated shelf-life of the product. From the results of chemical and sensory evaluation, it was concluded that chitosan film packing was an effective method for retaining the quality of lightly-salted and dried horse mackerel.

  • Basic studies have been conducted regarding the crystal formation of hydroxyapatite which was produced in the treatment process of phosphate-containing wastewater using calcium ions as the precipitating agent for its employment as the material for artificial bones. The precipitation of hydroxyapatite were conducted in the synthetic solution which simulating human body fluid for its increased applicability. Ca($NO_3$)$_2$$.$$4H_2$O and ($NH_4$)$_2$$HPO_4$ were employed for the precipitation of hydroxyapatite and its composition was analyzed after drying at 80oC. The thermal behavior of precipitate was investigated by examining the change in its crystalline structure according to the sintering temperature. DTA/TG analysis showed that the escape of moisture from the precipitate occurred at ca. $100^{\circ}C$ and the decomposition of ammonia and the evaporation of lattice water were brought about at around $250^{\circ}C$. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that the thermally treated precipitate consisted mainly of hydroxyapatite. For dried precipitate, the bonds in the component materials which used for the precipitate formation were observed by FT-IR, and after thermal treatment the major bonds in the precipitate were shown to be $OH^{-}$, $PO_4^{3-}$ , and $CO_3^{ 2-}$ , which were main comprising bonds of hydroxyapatite.

  • To investigate the interaction of omeprazole (OMP) and meglumine (MEG), a complex was prepared by freeze-drying method in ammoniacal aqueous medium at room temperature and subjected to IR, DSC, and 1H NMR analysis. In addition, the stability of the complex was tested by accelerated stability analysis, and the dissolution rate of both powder and enteric coated was determined pellet by paddle method. The results are as follows; i) IR, DSC, and $^{1}H$ NMR studies indicate the formation of inclusion complex between OMP and MEG probably by electrostatic forces as $[OMP]\;[MEGH]^+$ form in a stoichiometric ratio (1:1) of OMP : MEG. ii) The dissolution rate of enteric coated OMP-MEG complex pellet in simulated enteric fluid was 90.6% in 10 minutes, which may satisfy the requirement for the regulation of dissolution. iii) OMP-MEG complex were decomposed according to pseudo 1st order kinetics: while the decomposition of OMP showed a rate constant $(k_{25^{\circ}C})$ of $5.13{\times}10^{-4}{\cdot}\;day^{-1}$, a half-life$(t_{1/2})$ of 1,350 days, a shelf-life$(T_{90%})$ 205 days and an activation energy of 23.53 kcal/mole. OMP-MEG complex inhibited a rate $(k_{25})$ of $2.92{\times}10^{-4}{\cdot}\;day^{-1}$, a half-life$(t_{1/2})$ of 2,373 days, a shelf-life $(T_{90%})$ of 306 days and an activation energy of 20.18 kcal/mole. iv) OMP was stabilized markedly by the formation of OMP-MEG complex between OMP and MEG, and the humidity increased the stability of OMP-MEG complex by decreasing the decomposition rate$(k_{50^{\circ}C})$ from $1.27{\times}10^{-2}{\cdot}\;day^{-1}$ at 31% R.H. to $2.54{\times}10^{-2}{\cdot}\;day^{-1}$ at 90% R.H.

  • An engineering scale test, which is called KENTEX, was carried out to understand and to analyze the coupled thermal, hydrological and mechanical phenomena in the engineered barrier system(EBS) of Korean reference disposal system. Using the experimental data obtained from KENTEX, the water saturation processes in bentonite could be analyzed. From the comparison between the model calculation using ABAQUS and the experimental results, the difference of the water content between them in the unsaturating part was large because the drying phenomena due to moisture redistribution by the temperature gradient could not be included in the model. In the saturating part, the difference of the water content between them was decreased gradually and showed to be small in the full saturation. And the time of about 95% saturation could be estimated about 500 days from the model calculation and experimental results. Also it could be known that the moisture redistribution in the unsaturated part could not be affected on the saturation time of bentonite in the repository. Therefore, it is considered that this model could be used to quantitatively predict the water saturation time in bentonite as EBS for the disposal system.

  • Hobun(Oyster shell W.) is a traditional material used as extender and white pigment from ancient times. The production method of it, however, has been discontinued. We have studied the traditional production method of Hobun through calcination of oyster shell, which is one of the traditional ways for preparing Hobun. Our work has the important meaning in that we can reproduce the manufacturing method of the discontinued traditional material and also it provides a solid background knowledge to stabilize the production and supply of Hobun for the cultural asset repairing materials. The result can be summarized as followings: The production processes of Hobun by calcination method are divided into 4 steps - calcination ${\rightarrow}$ slaking(pulverization) ${\rightarrow}$ separating fine powder by submergence in water ${\rightarrow}$ drying. In calcination step, the temperature is required to exceed $700^{\circ}$ to get pure white color of Hobun, since organic materials in the shell cause the final powder to be less white below $600^{\circ}$. And the calcination methods produce significant amount of calcium hydroxide, which is incongruent for pigment materials without additional treatments. The experimental study also demonstrated that the additional treatment process introduced in traditional paintings can be a probable process since the calcium of potassium hydroxide is observed to be promoted by this treatment. It is also concluded that, the calcination method of Hobun is appropriate for a small amount and high quality production.
