An experimental study was carried out on kaolinite-sand mixtures with various proportions of kaolinite content. To investigate physical behaviour of mixtures, index properties and compaction test results were analysed in various aspects. Moreover, to clearly see the interaction between kaolinite and sand particles, the observational analysis through microscopic image analysis device was conducted. The test results showed that an increase in the amount of kaolinite could create a strong bonding structure which resulted in higher specific surface available for activities of kaolinite particles. Also, an increase in the amount of the kaolinite resulted in an increase in the percentage of water sorption. Then it could accelerate the occupation rate of water which tended to take up the space that would have been occupied by solid particles, and accordingly, resulted in the decreased maximum dry unit weight and increased initial void ratio. Based on the microscopic image analysis, the samples were individually classified into three types of mixture such as sand dominant, intermediate fine content, and fine dominant. In addition, the fine and coarse grains seem to interact well in the mixtures with the fine content ranging from 25 to 40%.
This study was intended to evaluate the water permeability and structure for calcium bentonite-sand mixtures to utilize calcium bentonite as a liner. This study conducted physico-chemical properties tests, compaction tests, permeability test and Scanning Electron Microscopy analysis (SEM) analysis. It was found the higher the ratio of calcium bentonite, the lower the dry density with coefficient of permeability, and the higher the optimum moisture content. In particular, SEM analysis was found the higher the ratio of calcium bentonite, the higher the area of the montmorillonite particles. In conclusion, the optimum coefficient of permeability that finds the landfill liner condition (must be less than $1{\times}10^{-7}cm/sec$) was obtained when the ratio of calcium bentonite was 40% or higher. These findings may improve the understanding of the calcium bentonite as a liner. Calcium bentonite shows a similar permeability to sodium bentonite 7% when mixed at 40% or more. Therefore, it is considered that calcium bentonite can be utilized as a liner.

The main objective of this study is to evaluate and compare the efficiency of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) in enhancing the unconfined compressive strength of soft soil alone and soft soil mixed with recycled tiles. The recycled tiles have been used to treat soft soil in a previous research by Al-Bared et al. (2019) and the results showed significant improvement, but the improved strength value was for samples treated with low cement content (2%). Hence, OPC is added alone in this research in various proportions and together with the optimum value of recycled tiles in order to investigate the improvement in the strength. The results of the compaction tests of the soft soil treated with recycled tiles and 2, 4, and 6% OPC revealed an increment in the maximum dry density and a decrement in the optimum moisture content. The optimum value of OPC was found to be 6%, at which the strength was the highest for both samples treated with OPC alone and samples treated with OPC and 20% recycled tiles. Under similar curing time, the strength of samples treated with recycled tiles and OPC was higher than the treated soil with the same percentage of OPC alone. The stress-strain curves showed ductile plastic behaviour for the untreated soft clay and brittle behaviour for almost all treated samples with OPC alone and OPC with recycled tiles. The microstructural tests indicated the formation of new cementitious products that were responsible for the improvement of the strength, such as calcium aluminium silicate hydrate. This research promotes recycled tiles as a green stabiliser for soil stabilisation capable of reducing the amount of OPC required for ground improvement. The replacement of OPC with recycled tiles resulted in higher strength compared to the control mix and this achievement may results in reducing both OPC in soil stabilisation and the disposal of recycled tiles into landfills.

The RGB (red, green, and blue) imagery analysis is an important remote sensing tool, which estimates the effect of environmental stress on turfgrass growth and physiology. Therefore, this study investigated the effect of continuous wear stress treatment on Zoysia japonica through RGB imagery analysis. The results of the growth measurement showed that the plant height substantially decreased, after nine hours of treatment with no considerable difference thereafter. Dry weight measurement showed a substantial difference in the morphological growth characteristics of the aerial part of the turfgrass, but none in the stolon and root zone. This could be attributed to the short period of compaction treatment. The ROS (reactive oxygen species) analysis showed that ROS rapidly increased due to wear stress treatment. The MDA content increased during the traffic process, whereas the green pixels increased and decreased repeatedly; however, overall, the trend declined but the overall trend decreased. Thus, this study confirmed that MDA was effective in reflecting the wear stress of turfgrass; however, it could through RGB image analysis.

The road construction, as part of effort to ease the worsening traffic, has been underway throughout the nation, while the existing road has been increasingly losing its load carrying capacity due to such factors as heavy traffic and weathering. In the case of site, the soil type, plasticity index, and specific gravity were SC, 12.2%, and 2.66, respectively. The maximum dry density, optimum moisture content and modified CBR were $1.895g/cm^3$ (Modified Compaction D), 13.6%, and 16.2%, respectively. A correlation of coefficient expressed good interrelationship by 0.90 between the CBR estimated from a dynamic penetration index of dynamic cone penetrometer test and a deformation modulus converted from a dynamic deflection modulus obtained from a portable FWD test.

In order to investigate the effects of grain size distribution, cement content, and molding pressure on the strength and durability of soil-cement mixtures, a laboratory test of soil cement mixtures was performed at four levels of cement content, five levels of molding pressure, and four levels of normal curing periods. The results are summarized as follows: 1. Optimum moisture contents in loam soil and maximum dry density in sand soil increased with the increase of cement content, but in others, both optimum moisture contents and maximum dry density were changed ununiformly. 2. When the specimens were molded with molding pressure, 50kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, strength of soil cement mixture with cement content, 2 and 4 per cent, was lower than the strength of soil cement mixture without cement content by more than 40 to 50 per cent. 3. The strength of soil-cement molded with molding pressure, 100kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, was higher than the strength of soil-cement molded with M.D.D. obtained from standard compaction test more than 40 per cent in sand loam cement and 50 per cent in loamy cement. 4. There was highly significant positive correlation among molding pressure, cement content and unconfined compressive strentgh and so the following multiple regression equations were obtained. Loam: fc=1.9693C+0.197P-0.84 Sandy loam: fc=2.9065C+0.235P-0.77 5. When the specimens were molded with molding pressure, 20 to 100kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, the regression equation between the 28-day and 7-day strenght was obtained as follows. Loam : q28=1.1050q7+7.59(r=0.9147) Sandy loam : q28=1.3905q7+3.17 (r=0.9801) 6. At the cement contents of above 50 per cent, the weight losses by freeeze-thaw test were negligible. At the cement content of below 8 per cent the weight losses were singnificantly high under low molding pressure and remarkably decreased with the increase of molding pressure up to 80kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$. 7. Resistance to damage from water and to absorption of water were not improved by molding pressure alone, but when the soil was mixtured with cement above 6 per cent, damage seldoms occurred and absorbed less than 5 per cent of water. 8. There was highly significant inverse-corelationship between the compressive strength of soil cement mixtures and their freeze-thaw loss as well as water absorption. By the regression equation methods, the relationships between them were expessed as followed fc=-7.3206Wa+115.6(r=0.9871) log fc=-0.0174L+1.59(r=0.7709) where fc=unconfined compressive stregth after 28-days curing. kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ Wa=water absorption, % L : freeze-thaw loss rate, %

Soil stabilization can make the soils becoming more stable by using an admixture to the soil. Lime stabilization enhances the engineering properties of soil, which includes reducing soil plasticity, increasing optimum moisture content, decreasing maximum dry density and improving soil compaction. Silica fume is utilized as a pozzolanic material in the application of soil stabilization. Silica fume was once considered non-environmental friendly. In this paper, the materials required are kaolin grade S300, lime and silica fume. The focus of the study is on the determination of the physical properties of the soils tested and the consolidation of kaolin mixed with 6% silica fume and different percentages (3%, 5%, 7% and 9%) of lime. Consolidation test is carried out on the kaolin and the mixtures of soil-lime-silica fume to investigate the effect of lime stabilization with silica fume additives on the consolidation of the mixtures. Based on the results obtained, all soil samples are indicated as soils with medium plasticity. For mixtures with 0% to 9% of lime with 6% SF, the decrease in the maximum dry density is about 15.9% and the increase in the optimum moisture content is about 23.5%. Decreases in the coefficient of permeability of the mixtures occur if compared to the coefficient of permeability of kaolin soft clay itself reduce the compression index (Cc) more than L-SF soil mix due to pozzolanic reaction between lime and silica fume and the optimum percent of lime-silica fume was found to be (5%+6%) mix. The average coefficient of volume compressibility decreases with increasing the stabilizer content due to pozzolanic reaction happening within the soil which results in changes in the soil matrix. Lime content +6% silica fume mix can reduce the coefficient of consolidation from at 3%L+6%SF, thereafter there is an increase from 9%L+6%SF mix. The optimal percentage of lime silica fume combination is attained at 5.0% lime and 6.0% silica fume in order to improve the shear strength of kaolin soft clay. Microstructural development took place in the stabilized soil due to increase in lime content of tertiary clay stabilized with 7% lime and 4% silica fume together.

This study has been carried out to evaluate the CBR characteristics and the correlations among every soil properties of National road in Yeongnam region. Total of 480 soil samples were collected from 41 administrative districts for more than 30 years. Their physical and mechanical properties such as natural water content, the Atterberg limit, No. 200 sieve passing, the compaction test and the CBR test results were involved. The soils in Yeongnam region, SM, SC, SP and CL by USCS have predominated approximately 79%. The test results show that average CBR values of gravel and sand range from 12.7% to 20.3% and those of silt and clay range from 4.8% to 7.1%. It means that average CBR values of fine grained soils are less than a half of coarse grained one. Natural water content, No. 200 sieve passing, optimum moisture content and maximum dry density of soils are well correlated with CBR values. Especially, it presents that No. 200 sieve passing is the best correlation factor with CBR value. If consider the partition off this region into 6 zones of classified by mother rock, the correlation between CBR value and every soil properties tends to increase. It is suggested that tables, figures and the regressions described in this paper may be available for designers and engineers to understand the characteristics of an embankment materials in Yeongnam region.
In order to investigate the strength characteristics of weathered granite soils in unsaturated state, the five physically different weathered granite soils and the common soil (sandy loam) were examined. The disturbed and the undisturbed material were prepared for triaxial compression test. The following conclusions were drawn from the study; 1. Dry density of the undisturbed soil samples was lower than maximum dry density determined from the compaction test and it showed the higher value at the well graded soil. 2. The failure strength of the samples decreased with the increase of moisture content of the soil and these results were highly pronounced at the common soil sample having a good cohesive property. 3. On weathered granite soils, the cohesion was lower measured and the internal friction angle highly, the decrease rate at internal friction angle with increase of moisture content of the soil was more significant than that of cohesion 4. The modulus of deformation of the samples decreased with increase of moisture content of the soil and these phenomena were highly pronounced at the weathered granite soils than common soil. 5. The failure strength of the samples increased with in crease of confining pressure and effect of confining pressure on failure strength was highly significant at the lower moisture content of the soil.

Natural ground is a composite consisted of the three phases of water, air and soil paircies. Among the three components, water as a material is weU understood but soil particles are not in foundation engineering. Especially, weathered granite soil generally shows a large volumetric expansion when they freeze. And, the stability and durability of the soil have shown decreased with repetitive freezing and thawing processes. These unique charcteristics may cause various construction and management problems if the soil is used as a construction material and foundation layers. This project was initiated to investigate the soil's physical and engineering characteristics resulting from freezing and freezing-thawing processes. Research results may be used as a basic data in solving various problems related to the soil's unique characteristics. The following conclusions were obtained: The degree of decomposition of weathered granite soil in Kangwon-do was very different between the West and East sides of the divide of the Dae-Kwan Ryung. Soil particles distributed wide from very coarse to fine particles. Consistency could be predicted with a function of P200 as LL=0.8 P200+20. Permeability ranged from 10-2 to 10-4cm/sec, moisture content from 15 to 20% and maximum dry density from 1.55 to 1.73 g /cmΥ$^3$ By compaction, soil particles easily crushed, D50 of soil particles decreased and specific surface significantly increased. Shear characteristics varied wide depending on the disturbance of soil. Strain characteristics influenced the soil's dynamic behviour. Elastic failure mode was observed if strain was less than 1O-4/s and plastic failure mode was observed if strain was more than 10-2/s. The elastic wave velocity in the soil rapidly increased if dry density became larger than 1.5 g /cm$^3$ and these values were Vp=250, Vg= 150, respectively. Frost heave ratio was the highest around 0 $^{\circ}C$ and the maximum frost heave pressure was observed when deformation ratio was less than 10% which was the stability state of soil freezing. The state had no relation with frost depth. Over freezing process was observed when drainage or suction freezing process was undergone. Drainage freezing process was observed if freezing velocity was high under confined pressure and suction frost process was occurred if the velocity was low under the same confined process.
