This study analyzes the dynamic characteristics of daily freight rates of dry bulk and tanker shipping markets and their forecasting accuracy by using the error correction models. In order to calculate the error terms from the co-integrated time series, this study uses the common stochastic trend model (CSTM model) and vector error correction model (VECM model). First, the error correction model using the error term from the CSTM model yields more appropriate results of adjustment speed coefficient than one using the error term from the VECM model. Furthermore, according to the adjusted determination coefficients (adjR2), the error correction model of CSTM-model error term shows more model fitness than that of VECM-model error term. Second, according to the criteria of mean absolute error (MAE) and mean absolute scaled error (MASE) which measure the forecasting accuracy, the results show that the error correction model with CSTM-model error term produces more accurate forecasts than that of VECM-model error term in the 12 cases among the total 15 cases. This study proposes the analysis and forecast tasks 1) using both of the CSTM-model and VECM-model error terms at the same time and 2) incorporating additional data of commodity and energy markets, and 3) differentiating the adjustment speed coefficients based the sign of the error term as the future research topics.
This study was conducted to determine some physical and chemical properties of the soil and their relationship to spectroscopic-based (visible range) analytical methods while evaluating soil organic matter fractions and soil quality in degraded and non-degraded soils in a wide range of environments. Soil samples were collected from the different landscape positions of cultivated and noncultivated soils, and the latter from the same landscape positions but with different vegetation, at Songco, Lantapan, Bukidnon. The physical and chemical properties of the soils were determined at the SPAL, CMU, Musuan, Bukidnon while the metagenomic properties were determined at the Laboratory of the University of Missourri, Missourri, USA. Bulk density and air dry soil strength values of the soils from the cultivated areas were generally higher than those of the uncultivated areas. Also, soils at the summit generally had lower bulk density and soil strength values than the other landscape positions. Moreover, soils planted to camote (Ipomoea batatas) had higher bulk density and soil strength values compared to soils grown to pepper under the trees. Exchangeable calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and potassium (K) and cation exchange capacity (CEC) of the soils were generally higher in uncultivated areas than those of the cultivated areas. A similar trend was observed for the potassium permanganate ($KMnO_4$)-oxidizable organic C contents determined by spectroscopic method and the total C contents determined by the Walkley-Black method. The $KMnO_4$-oxidizable organic C contents determined by spectroscopic method and the total C contents determined by the Walkley-Black method were closely related ($r=0.631^{**}$). Hence, the former method shows promise in assessing soil quality as it is a rapid test, relatively low cost and can be distributed as a field kit either with a portable spectrometer or with a color chart.
This study was conducted to find out the changes of soil physical properties and rice growth by the different soil prepartion, such as direct seeding in dry or submerged condition, tillage or no-tillage, and transplanting the infant seedlings. Soil bulk density and hardness were higher in no-tillage plots than tillage plots, and in dry-seeding plots than submerged seeding plots. Permeability of no-tillage plot was increased 56% and water requirement was also increased 27% compare to the conventional transplanting condition. In no-tillage plot, the soil water contents were so rapidly decreased that easily changed to optimum condition for machinery working. The root growth of rice was inhibited as increasing the soil bulk density at early stage, bottom of culm in no-tillage submerged plot was located 0.9cm above the soil surface and the rice plant slightly lodged. The root distribution of surface layer was higher in no-tillage plot and the heading date was 2 days earlier in no-tillage plots than tillage plots, and 3 days earlier in dry seeding plot than submerged seeding plot. Rice yields of no-tillage plots were 5.55 M/T/ha and 5.16 M/T/ha for dry and submerged seeding respectively. These yields were lower about 12.1 % in dry seeding and 18.3% in submerged seeding compare with 6.31M/T/ha of transplanting plot. Rice yields were higher at dry seeding than submerged seeding in no-tillage condition, but in tillage condition, the rice yields were better at submerged seeding plot than dry one.
The Sr and Pb isotopic ratios and chemical composition were measured for atmospheric bulk deposition samples collected in the Jeonju, Gunsan and Namweon areas over a period of one year. Acidity of deposition ranged pH $4\~7$ with little higher in dry season, and around pH 5.0 in rainy season. The EC and TDS of rainy season was low showing dilution effect, and increased during dry season. Sulfate $(SO_4)\;and\;NO_3$ are atmospheric aerosols largely of anthropogenic origin in winter. Sodium was concentrated in winter deposition, Ca was concentrated in spring to summer deposition. Namweon has lower EC and TDS than those of other, and Jeonju has higher. Namweon was concentrated in $HCO_3$ and Cunsan was concentrated in Cl. Aluminium, Cu, and Zn show good correlation index with TDS, indicating of their origin atmospheric. $^{87}Sr/^{86}Sr$ ratios of bulk deposition ranged from 0.7109 to 0.7128. The isotopic variations are correlated with mixing of isotopic compositions of local soils, road deposit and biogenic aerosol. In order to constrain further the origin of aerosols in rainwater, it will be necessary to collect additional Sr isotopic data for aerosols. Lead isotope ratios for all areas were similar and belonged to Pb isotope ratios of Seoul's aerosols, but little different with Beijing's aerosols. It showing that Pb in the Korea mainly derived from the gasoline combustion, not exclusively from the Beijing.
This research reports the effects of shifting cultivation on soil environment collecting samples from 0-5 cm soil depth from five locations viz. at Burburichhara, Maichchari, Longadu, Sukurchhari and Muralipara in Rangamati district of Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHTs). Soil analyses showed that fungal and bacterial population, microbial respiration and active microbial biomass, maximum water holding capacity, conductivity and moisture contents were significantly (at least $p{\leq}0.05$) lower in shifting cultivated soil compared to adjacent mixed tree plantations at all the sites. On an average in soils of 5 different shifting cultivated lands fungal population was $1.33{\times}10^5$ CFU/g dry soil and bacterial population $1.80{\times}10^7$ CFU/g dry soil and in mixed plantations fungal population was $1.70{\times}10^5$ and bacterial population $2.51{\times}10^7$ CFU/g dry soil. Organic matter and exchangeable Ca and Mg contents were significantly (at least $p{\leq}0.05$) lower and bulk density significantly (at least $p{\leq}0.05$) higher in shifting cultivated land in most of the locations compared to adjacent mixed tree plantations. Ratios of microbial respiration and organic carbon as well as active microbial biomass and organic carbon were distinctly lower and pH higher at 3 locations in shifting cultivated soils compared to mixed plantations. Findings of various soil properties, therefore, suggest that shifting cultivation has deteriorating effects on soil environment.
The effect of quartz which exists in clays, especially in kaolin used for the production of chamotte sagger, on the strength of refractory was examined. In this study, a mixture of chamotte 50%, kaolin 25%, plastic clay 25% in ternary component system was selected as a batch composition. To this mixture 1%, 3% and 5% of feldspar and sericite were added respectively. The plastic clay used here was separated under 170 mesh by dry process. Feldspar and sericite were separated under 325 mesh by dry process. Feldspar and sericite were separated under 325 mesh by dry process. In order to change the particle size and the content of quartz, the kaolin was separated under 60, 115, 170 and 325 mesh by wet process, substituted quartz for coarse parts of it. Chamotte was classified into three grades, coarse (5-10mesh): medium (10-20mesh): fine(20-115mesh) and the ratio was 1:1:1. Samples were formed in 0.8xIx10cm size with 12.5% water at 160kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ pressure, and fired at 130$0^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr. The fired samples were ivnestigated by means of x-ray diffraction analysis and microscopic observation, and the physical properties of them were also examined, such as firing shrinkage, apparent specific gravity and bulk specific gravity, apparent porosity, water absorption and modulus of rupture. The obtained results are as follows: 1. When screened kaolin with low content of quartz was added to fixed chamotte-plastic clay system, the sample lowered modulus of rupture and increased apparent porosity as the size of kaolin became finer. 2. When kaolin under 325 mesh with 7.2-15.81% quartz between 60-325 mesh was added to fixed chamotte-plastic clay system, the sample had higher apparent porosity and lower modulus of ruputure as the size and the amount of quartz became larger. 3. The addition of feldspar and sericite to chamotte-plastic clay system improved apparent porosity and modulus of rupture. The effect of feldspar was better when quartz content was low, although that of sericite was better than quartz content was high.
In the energy-climate era, pollution emissions from port activities have a significant issue in international shipping and port community. Thus international organization such as IMO and developed countries are seeking to develop various reduction strategies against air pollution. However Korea has recently conducted several studies concerning air pollution in port industry. The main purpose of the paper is to suggest emission reduction strategies for bulk terminal in Port of Incheon, which handles large amount bulk cargoes as a gateway for the metropolitan area. For this aim, the clean air strategies of the world major ports were considered and air pollution reduction strategies were suggested. The main findings of this paper are as follows. First, the emission reduction strategies for container terminal are should be integrated based on technologies changes, operational changes and market-based measures. Second, the emission reduction strategies for bulk terminal can be effective when use innovative measures during loading, unloading and storage process such as telescopic cascade trimming chute, snake sandwich equipment, dry fog system and dome structure. Finally, investigation on actual conditions of air pollution in Korean ports and development of environmental evaluation scheme for persisting monitoring should be conducted.
This experiment was conducted in the laboratory in order to find out the relationships between the root growth and soil physical properties. The soils selected for this study were Sangju sandy loam, Yeongog loam, Hwadong silty clay loam, which have been considered to be a typical upland soils of Korea. Artificial core samples were made with various moisture contents and bulk densities. Elongation rate of pea seedling taproot and soil strength were measured respectively in these core samples. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. The soil strength increased with the bulk density and deceased with moisture content. 2. The correlation between root elongation and soil bulk density was significantly recognized at the same moisture content and the root elongation was influenced by the bulk density more significantly at dry condition. 3. The elongation rate of pea seedling taproot was significantly decreased by increasing the strength (Yamanaka tester and Fine probe) of the soils. 4. The soil strength of $21kg/cm^2$ in fine metal probe or 24mm in Yamanaka tester was considered to be the critical point for plant growth, which was restricting root elongation smaller than 1/4 of the maximum growth rate.
Maritime transportation is one of the oldest means of transportation utilized by mankind, and it has significantly contributed to the advancement of civilization by efficiently transporting bulk cargo at a low cost. The study aim to identify the factors influencing the selection of shipping companies in the bulk shipping market and provide insights for improving the competitiveness of shipping-related companies. To achieve this goal, the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was employed. For the empirical analysis, previous research, interviews, and a pilot test were conducted to identify five top-level factors such as companies, vessels, operations, services, and transaction factors. Each top-level factor has four sub-factors. The results of the analysis, based on 80 valid questionnaires, are as follows: Firstly, in the selection of shipping companies, the priority of factors influencing the choice of shipping companies was as follows: vessel factors were the most important, followed by company, operations, relationship, and service factors. Secondly, when investigating the priority of sub-factors, the availability/appropriateness of vessels was the most crucial factor, followed by company characteristics, financial soundness, and the company's reputation in order. The implications of these findings suggest that shipowners should focus on securing more suitable vessels and enhancing their reputation in response to shippers' demand. Shippers, on the other hand, should consider maintaining a healthy financial structure as a crucial task in securing competitive shipping service providers.
A series of soil bin experiments was carried out on land to evaluate the soil physical properties whether they are pertinent to soil-wheel system and to investigate if true model theory u applicable to powered rigid wheel-soil system. Four different sized wheels having diameter of 45, 60, 75 and 90 em were wed for the experiment. The following conclusion was derived from the study. (1) True model theory can be sufficiently utilized to study the wheel traction and linkage on lands. (2) For both dry and wet sands, Cone Index(CI) and soil shear parameters (c, ${\phi}$) with bulk density (${\gamma}$) were found to be good measures of soil physical properties which are pertinent to predict the performance of the powered rigid wheel-soil system.
