  • The air-side particulate fouling of the HVAC heat exchangers degrades the performance of cooling capacity, pressure drop across a heat exchanger, and indoor air quality. The purpose of this study is to investigate the fouling characteristics using accelerated particle loading system. The fouling characteristics are analyzed as functions of a dust concentration, a face velocity and a wet or dry surface condition. The pressure drop increases with increasing test operation and reaches constant asymptotic level. For the saturated condition due to particle loading, the pressure drop across the slitted finned-tube heat exchangers at the face velocity of 1 m/sec increases up to 57% and the cooling capacity decreases about 2%. The cooling capacities are not affected greatly by the presence of the fouling deposits if the thickness of the fouling deposits can not change substantially the flow pattern through the fins.

  • The performance experiments for a microchannel printed circuit heat exchanger (PCHE) of high-performance and high-efficiency on the two technologies of micro photo-etching and diffusion bonding were performed in this study. The microchannel PCHE were experimentally investigated for Reynolds number in ranges of 100 $\sim$ 700 under various flow conditions in the hot side and the cold side. The inlet temperatures of the hot side were conducted in range of $40^{\circ}C\;{\sim}\;50^{\circ}C$ while that of the cold-side were fixed at $20^{\circ}C$. In the flow pattern, the counter flow was provided 6.8% and 10 $\sim$ 15% higher average heat transfer rate and heat transfer performance than the parallel flow, respectively. The average heat transfer rate, heat transfer performance and pressure drop increases with increasing Reynolds number in all the experiment. The increasing of inlet temperature in the experiment range has not an effect on the heat transfer performance while the pressure drop decrease slightly with that of inlet temperature. The experimental correlations to the heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop factor as a function of the Reynolds number have been suggested for the microchannel PCHE.

  • This paper reviews the studies on the pressure drop and the heat transfer in microchannels. Although a lot of studies about the single-phase flow have been done until now, conflicting results are occasionally reported about flow transition from laminar flow to turbulent flow, friction factor, and Nusselt number. Some studies reported the early flow transition due to relatively greater wall effect like surface roughness, but the other studies showed that the flow transition occurred at the Reynolds number of about 2300 and the early flow transition might be due to less accurate measurement of the channel geometry. Also, there have been arguments whether the conventional relation based upon continuum theory can be applied to the fluid flow and the heat transfer in microchannels without modification or not. The studies about the two-phase flow in microchannels have been mostly about investigating the flow pattern and the pressure drop in rectangular channels using two-component, two-phase flow like air/water mixture. Some studies proposed correlations to predict two-phase flow pressure drop in microchannels. They were mostly based on Lockhart-Martinelli model with modification on C-coefficient, which was dependent on channel geometry, Reynolds number, surface tension, and so on. Others investigated the characteristics of flow boiling heat transfer in microchannels with respect to test parameters such as mass flux, heat flux, system pressure, and so on. The existing studies have not been fully satisfactory in providing consistent results about the pressure drop and the heat transfer in microchannels. Therefore, more in-depth studies should be done for understanding the fundamentals of the transport phenomena in the microchannels and giving the basic guidelines to design the micro devices.

  • This study proposes the analysis and evaluation method of time series ultrasonic signal using the chaotic feature extraction for ultrasonic pattern recognition. Features extracted from time series data using the chaotic time series signal analysis quantitatively welding defects. For this purpose analysis objective in this study is fractal dimension and Lyapunov exponent. Trajectory changes in the strange attractor indicated that even same type of defects carried substantial difference in chaoticity resulting from distance shills such as 0.5 and 1.0 skip distance. Such differences in chaoticity enables the evaluation of unique features of defects in the weld zone. In experiment fractal(correlation) dimension and Lyapunov exponent extracted from 6dB ultrasonic defect signals of weld zone showed chaoticity. In quantitative chaotic feature extraction, feature values(mean values) of 4.2690 and 0.0907 in the case of porosity and 4.2432 and 0.0888 in the case of incomplete penetration were proposed on the basis of fractal dimension and Lyapunov exponent. Proposed chaotic feature extraction in this study enhances ultrasonic pattern recognition results from defect signals of weld zone such as vertical hole.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of physical properties of fuels on spray characteristics in the gasoline direct injection system. Injection rate, spray visualization, and spray pattern experiments were performed to analyze the spray characteristics of ethanol, gasoline, and ethanol/gasoline blends. We measured injection rate of each fuel via the Bosch method. The spray visualization experiment was also carried out at atmospheric pressure using a high-speed camera. Finally, the average of drop surface area per unit volume was measured using the optical patternator. The experimental results from Bosch method showed that peak injection rate increased when the volume fraction of ethanol increased. In addition, higher viscosity of ethanol than that of gasoline leads to longer injection delay. At the initial injection region before reaching 0.8 ms, the spray tip penetration becomes longer as increasing the volume fraction of ethanol, but reversely shorter after 0.8 ms. It was found that ethanol makes spray angle become larger. The surface area per unit volume of the drop was decreased as the distance from the injection tip or the concentration of the gasoline increased.

  • The aerodynamic characteristics of a separated captive body in flow field around aircraft are studied to observe aerodynamic stability for safe separation from aircraft. Since the captive body separated from aircraft is initially exposed to unsteady flow pattern, the change of aerodynamic forces and moments should be measured to analyze how the flow pattern affects on the captive body at the vicinity of aircraft. Aerodynamic forces and moments of the separated captive body are measured at selected positions along predictable dropping trajectories. The measuring trajectories, generated by the free drop test of the dropping model in the wind tunnel, are consisted of 9 possible lines by free dropped trajectories. Experimental results show that the aerodynamic forces and moments are significantly varied with the distance between the captive body and aircraft. In conclusion, the change of aerodynamic characteristics within flow field around aircraft should be considered to simulate trajectories of the separated captive body from aircraft.

  • This study presents a novel way to enhance uniformity of the gas flow inside the solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), which is critically important to fuel cell performance, by using dimples. A pattern of dimple, which works as a flow distributor/collector, is designed at the inlet and outlet section of a straight channel gas separator. Size of the dimples and the gap between them were changed to optimize the flow uniformity, and any change in size or gap is considered as one design. The results show that some dimple patterns significantly enhance the uniformity compared to baseline, about 4%, while the others slightly reduce it, about 1%. Besides, the dimple pattern also affects to the pressure drop in the flow channel, however the pressure drop in all cases are negligible (less than 26.4 Pa).

  • Resource managing is very difficult because the multimedia data compressed by a VBR shows a bit rate change within high range, Therefore, the VOD server should use the prefetch method in order to improve system utilization, such as prefetching data in the overload period by a meta table that is the reference pattern of MPEG data which is analyzed off line. This prefetch method will not result in a failure to display at overload, however, this method can not keep a minimum loading time and low costs, because the prefetched section is being maximizes. In this paper, we suggest another method that the system utilization can be improved using the fixed prefetched section to keep loading time and costs under a constant range at overload. But this technique will result in a failure to display, due to fixed prefetched section. Rut, in this paper we suggest a drop module that drops only the B frame in the GOP, consistently distributes a lower drop in media quality for the user.
