  • This study was carried out to improve the rice grain quality of Ilpum cultivar, especially to reduce the chalky rice rate by controlling top dressing of nitrogen application ratio at the tillering and panicle initiation stage. In the rice plant growth, the number of tiller and leaf area index of maximum tillering stage were influenced by basal dressing and top dressing at tillering stage; however those of heading stage were mainly influenced by top dressing at panicle initiation stage. In yield and yield components, they were influence by the top dressing at panicle initiation stage and the rice yield was increased by percentage of the top dressing. The protein content of rice grain was increased as the rate of top dressing at panicle initiation stage was increased. The rate of chalky and damaged rice was remarkably increased as the top dressing ratio was increased, resulting in reducing the rate of head rice rate. As the results, the characteristics of milling and rice quality was improved when the amount of top dress was reduced as 50% at the panicle initiation stage, and the yield of head rice also increased.

  • This study was carried out to determine the effect of various fertilizer levels on the growth and yield of Scutellaria baicalensis Georg cultivated after the barley in the southern coastal areas of Korea under the non-mulching condition by direct sowing culture. The flowering date of medium dressing plot $(N\;:\;P_2O_5\;:\;K_2O=9\;:\;13.5\;:\;9 kg/10a)$ and heavy dression plot $(N\;:\;P_2O_5\;:\;K_2O=12\;:\;18\;:\;12kg/l0a)$ were July 23. The flowering date of the medium and the heavy dressing plot was delayed by 3days compared with that of non-fertilizing plot. The growth characteristics such as stem length, diameter of main stem, number of branch per plant, main root length, main root thickness and dry weight of stem leaves were more increased at medium dressing plot than that of other fertilizer levels. The root dry weight of in Scutellaria baicalensis Georg cultivated after barley was highest at the fertilizing plot of N, $P_2O_5\;:\;K_2O$ = 9 : 13.5 : 9kg/10a. The dried-root yield was 178kg in medium dressing plot, 167kg in standard dressing pot, and 126kg in non-dressing plot. The dried-root yield of medium dressing plot was 7% and 41% higher than that of standard dressing pot and non-dressing control plot, respectively.

  • An efficient low-input system (LIS) for fertiliser use in rice cultivation is necessary to reduce fossil energy use and pollution. Japanese people like Japonica rice, especially cv. Koshihikari. However, it has very low lodging resistance in Japanese weather condition. Our objective was to develop a LIS with the minimum sacrifice of grain yield in rice. Koshihikari was grown using conventional fertilization as a control (CON) with 4 g N $m^{-2}$., 8g $P_2$ $O_{5}$ $m^{-2}$ and 8 g $K_2$O $m^{-2}$ as a basal fertilizer dressing. It was compared with a low fertilizer treatment (LF) with only 4 g $P_2$ $O_{5}$ $m^{-2}$ as a basal dressing in the first year and no basal phosphorus fertilizer in the second year. Chopped rice straw was incorporated into the soil before the cropping season in both years. Fertilizer of 4 g N $m^{-2}$ was top-dressed at 15 days before heading in CON plots and 30 days before heading in LF plots in both years. Lodging was significantly less in LF than in CON plots, however, no rice straw effect was found in low fertilized condition. Grain yields in LF plots were reduced by 15-16% below those of CON plots. Lower yields in LF plots were associated with a reduced number of spikelets per unit area. However, big spikelet size was acquired in LF by 10 days earlier N top dressing than CON plots. A close relationship was found between spikelet numbers and N content of the plant at heading, and between grain yield or shoot dry weight and N content of the plant at maturity. Regardless of the fertilizer application methods, N use efficiency for the number of spikelets, final total dry matter and grain yield was essentially identical among fertilizer treatments. The reduced growth and yield in the LF plots resulted from low absorption of nitrogen. Conclusively, LIS can drastically reduce chemical fertilizer use and facilitate harvest operations by reducing lodging with some yield reduction..

  • Experiments were conducted to know N, P, and K top dressing effects on yield and other agronomic characters of rice plants grown in 5-year differently fertilized soils. Four levels of nitrogen, 0, 1.2, 2.4, and 3.6kg/10a, were applied 32 days before heading in 5-year non-fertilized and PK applied plots. Four levels of P_2 $O_{5}$ and K_2 O of 0, 4, 8 and 12kg/l0a were applied 40 days before heading in 5-year NK and NP applied plots, respectively. 1. Heading was delayed by seven days in 5-year non-fertilized and PK applied plots compared to NK, NP, or NPK applied plots where nitrogen was applied as basal. However, in 5-year non-fertilized and PK applied plots heading was delayed from 1 to 4 days as amounts of nitrogen top dressing increased. Phosphorus and potassium did not affect heading date of rice plants. 2. In 5-year non-fertilized plot grain yield increased as amounts of nitrogen top dressing increased up to 2.4kg/l0a due to both increased number of panicles per hill and spikelets per panicle. However, in 5-year PK applied plot amounts of nitrogen top dressing did not affect grain yield; the number of panicle per hill increased, but the percentage of ripened grains and grain weight tended to decrease as nitrogen levels increase. 3. The number of panicle/maximum tillers ratio in percentage increased markedly as amounts of nitrogen top dressing increased in 5-year non-fertilized and PK applied plots with maximum value of 130% on the basis of maximum tillers at vegetative stage. 4. Top dressing of phosphorus and potassium did not affect yield and other agronomic characters in NK and NP applied plots.

  • In order to obtain information necessary for attaining maximum yield of rice by increasing nitrogen efficiency, effects of top dressing of nitrogen fertilizer at the later part of growing season were investigated and results obtained are summurized as follows: 1. The increased application of nitrogen fertilizer was very effective in increasing leaf areas and net assimilation rate of rice plants. The spikelets number per hill was also increased due to heavy nitrogen fertilizer. 2. The concentrated top dressing at the later part of plant growth apparently increased the crop growth rate at the reproduction stage and ripening stage of rice, respectively. The nitrogen efficiency was greatly improved by the concentrated top nitrogen dressing through the increase of effective tiller number and the improvement of production organ to non productive organ ratio. 3. The concentrated top nitrogen dressing at the later growing season was considered to be one of the most effective methods of fertilizer applications as well as cultivation of fertilizer resistant varieties for the high yield of rice and improving soil fertility.

  • To find out the optimum split application ratios of fertilizer nitrogen and potassium in the newly opened pasture at spring, a field experiment was conducted. Two levels of nitrogen and potassium application and three split application ratios of both fertilizer were treated by split design with 4 replications. The experiment was carried out from March, 1984 to October, 1985 on the experimental field of the Livestock Experiment Station in Suweon. The results obtained are summarized as follow: 1. Total DM yield was not showed signigicant difference among split application ratios of nitrogen and potassium. 2. DM yield of grasses was 4,854 kg/ha in heavy basal application of N and $K_2$O (160 kgN: 140 kg $K_2$O/ha), it was significantly increased by 16% than of conventional dressing (80 kg N: 70 kg $K_2$O/ha). But there was almost no difference in dry matter among N and $K_2$O split application ratios. 3. Dry matter yield of legume in heavy basal dressing was decreased by 23% than that of conventional dressing. In the methods of NK application, dry matter yield of legume was tended to decrease by 3% with equal application and 9% with heavy dressing in autumn, when compared with that of heavy dressing in spring. 4. There was no significant difference in dry matter yield of native species between different basic fertilization levels, but dry matter yield of native species was decreased by 6% with equal application and more increased by 11% with heavy dressing in autumn, when compared with the yield of heavy dressing in spring. 5. In aspect of the botanical composition, the percentage distribution of grasses was increased and the ratio of legume was greatly decreased by heavy dressing at basal fertilization. Also for good maintenance of botanical composition, it is suggested that the equal split application of N and $K_2$O was desirable.

  • To investigate the relationship between the effect of potassium basal and top dressing amount on rice plant under the limed condition, a pot experiment was conducted with Milyang 21, rice variety. Growing status, yield components and chemical component of rice, plant were determined and soils were analyzed along with the growing stages and obtained results are as follows. 1. Control treatment, without lime application shows a good vegetative growth as compared with lime treated one. However grain yield was higher in lime treated pot when potassium was applied as basal and top dressing. 2. There was no big difference between potassium applied and control treatment on growing status of nice plant until 20 days after transplanting. However in case of lime treated pot big difference were observed 20 days after transplanting resulting lower grain yield as compared with control treatment. This trend were severe in a lime treated treatment. 3. In control treatment, potassium basal dressing shows higher grain yield as increase the amount of basal dressing and the highest yield obtained in all basal potassium application treatment. However in case of lime treated pot when two-third of potassium were applied as basal dressing, potassium content of rice became lower at reproductive stage and resulted lower yield. When we applied all the potassium as a basal dressing, there were no differences as compared with control treatment in terms of grain yield. 4. The soil condition that affects potassium absorption disorder in rice plant such as unlimed condition, potassium application should be done as a basal dressing. However in limed condition that potassium absorption disorder occurs scarcely, and potassium content exists unsufficient amount in soil, large amount of potassium as basal dressing and the rest as top dressing are recommended. 5. The higher content of potassium in rice plant at the reproductive growing stage results heavier tillers as compared with lower one so that heavier tillers produce more grain yield. 6. At vigorous growing stage there was a positive correlation between electric conductivity of soil and amount of potasium absorbed by rice plant. This fact suggests that to obtain higher yield large amount of potassium top dressing at late of vegetative growing stage are necessary so that the content of potassium in rice plant will increase and results higher yield.
