Turbulent Drag Reduction Using the Sliding-Belt Device (미끄러지는 벨트 장치를 이용한 난류 항력 감소)

  • The sliding-belt concept introduced by Bechert et al. (AIAA J., Vol. 34, pp. 1072~1074) is numerically applied to a turbulent boundary layer flow for the skin-friction reduction. The sliding belt is moved by the shear force exerted on the exposed surface of the belt without other dynamic energy input. The boundary condition at the sliding belt is developed from the force balance. Direct numerical simulations are performed for a few cases of belt configuration. In the ideal case where the mechanical losses associated with the belt can be ignored, the belt velocity increases until the integration of the shear stress over the belt surface becomes zero, resulting in zero skin friction on the belt. From practical consideration of losses occurred In the belt device, a few different belt velocities are given to the sliding belt. It is found that the amount of drag reduction is proportional to the belt velocity.

Fluid Force Reduction Characteristics of a Square Prism Having Fences on the Corner (모서리에 펜스를 가진 정방형주의 유체력저감 특성)

  • The fluid force reduction of a square prism having fences on the corner was studied by the measuring the drag and lift acting on the prism and by the visualization experiment of the flow around the prism. The height of the fence was 10% of the square width and the range of Reynolds number considered was from $Re=0.9{\times}104$ to $Re=2.1{\times}104$. The drag of the prism was reduced about 6.8% and the amplitude of the lift was reduced by attaching two normal fences on the rear corners of the prism. In this case, the separated flow at the front corners was reattached on the upper and lower sides of the prism and the vortex streets at the wake region were appeared more slowly than that of the prototype prism.

  • The suppression of fluid force acting on a square prism near plane wall was studied by attaching fences on the comers of the prism. The height of the fence was 10% of the square width and the range of Reynolds number considered was $Re=2.0{\times}10^4$. The experimental parameters were the attaching position and numbers of fences, the space ratios $G/B(G/B=0.1{\sim}1.2)$ between prism and plane wall. The average drag coefficients were increased and the average hit coefficients were decreased and increased with the space ratios foulard plane wall. The drag of the prism was reduced average 7.6% with the space ratios by attaching the normal fence at the rear and upper comer and the horizontal normal fence at the rear and lower corner on the prism.

  • The objective of this study is 0 estimate wind pressure acting on soundproof tunnel and noise reduction through the tunnel. For the purpose various shape of scale models were prepared and drag forces acting on each models were measured in wind tunnel. And numerical simulation was performed to confirm experimental results. As a result the lowest drag force coefficient of 0.59 was obtained in the case of arch roof shape model. Noise reduction through soundproof tunnel was simulated by using ray tracing method according to various open ratio of its roof area.

  • In this paper, the electromagnetic force acting in the arc column of 3 different extinction units is compared with using the FEM (Finite Element Method) and the arc velocity is calculated by the drag force of the fluid mechanics. The experiment for breaking the arc current was performed in each model at 100 volts in order to measure the arcing time. The outcome was compared with the computing value. As a result, this paper proposes that the divided U-shaped grid is able to shorten arcing time and improve the electric performance. It also suggests a methodology for comparing and analyzing the result obtained by simulation and experiment.

  • The results of flow feature around two circular cylinders in various arrangements are carried out using two-dimensional simulation at Reynolds number of 200. In this work, time-averaged fluid force acting on the upstream and downstream cylinders were calculated for staggered angle ${\alpha}=0{\sim}90^{\circ}$ in the range of L/D = 1.1~5, where ${\alpha}$ is the angle between the free-stream flow and the line connecting the centers of the cylinders, L is centre-to-centre distance and D is cylinder diameter. The dependence of magnitudes and trends of fluid force coefficient on the spacing ratio L/D and ${\alpha}$ are discussed. In all arrangements of two cylinders, tandem arrangement (${\alpha}=0^{\circ}$) is the case produced a minimum drag coefficient for downstream cylinder. Moreover, the locations of separation and stagnation points or pressure coefficient on surface of the cylinder were examined.   • Diffuse interface model for numerical analysis was used to compute supercavitating flows around various cavitators. The ambient pressures of 2 atm permitted cavitation studies in a range of cavitation number, ${\sigma}=0.1$ to 1.0 on selected conical and disk-headed cavitors. The computed results were compared with relation by Reichardt. Drag coefficient obtained from pressure forces acting on the cavitator also compared well with those obtained from analytical relations.

Unsteady Aerodynamic Loads on High Speed Trains Passing by Each Other

  • In order to study unsteady aerodynamic loads on high speed trains passing by each other 350km/h, three-dimensional flow fields around trains during the crossing event are numerically simulated using three-dimensional Euler equations. Roe's FDS with MUSCL interpolation is employed to simulate wave phenomena. An efficient moving grid system based on domain decomposition techniques is developed to analyze the unsteady flow field induced by the restricted motion of a train on a rail. Numerical simulations of the trains passing by on the double-track are carried out to study the effect of the train nose-shape, length and the existence of a tunnel on the crossing event. Unsteady aerodynamic loads-a side force and a drag force-acting on the train during the crossing are numerically predicted and analyzed. The side force mainly depends on the nose-shape, and the drag force depends on tunnel existence. Also. a push-pull (i.e.impluse force) force successively acts on each car and acts in different directions between the neighborhood cars. The maximum change of the impulsive force reaches about 3 tons. These aerodynamic force data are absolutely necessary to evaluate the stability of high speed multi-car trains. The results also indicate the effectiveness of the present numerical method for simulating the unsteady flow fields induced by bodies in relative motion.

  • An experimental assessment has been made of the drag reducing efficiency of the outer-layer vertical blades, which were first devised by Hutchins. The drag reduction efficiency of the blades was reported to reach as much as 30%. However, the drag reduction efficiency was quantified only in terms of the reduction in the local skin-friction coefficient. In the present study, a series of drag force measurements in towing tank has been performed toward the assessments of the total drag reduction efficiency of the outer-layer vertical blades. A maximum 9.6% of reduction of total drag was achieved. The scale of blade geometry is found to be weakly correlated with outer variable of boundary layer. In addition, detailed flow field measurements have been performed using 2-D time resolved PIV with a view to enabling the identification of drag reduction mechanism.
