  • Background and Objectives : Patients with pathologic voice often concern about recovery of voice after surgery. In our investigation, we give controlled values of three parameters of voice synthesis program of Dr. Speech Science. such as jitter, shimmer, and NNE(normalized noise energy) which characterize someone's voice from others and deviced a method to synthesize the predicted voice after performing operation. Subjects and Method : Values of vocal jitter, vocal shimmer, and glottal noise were measured with voices of 10 vocal cord Paralysis and 10 vocal Polyp Patients 1 week Prior to and 1 month after the surgery. With Dr. Speech science voice synthesis program we synthesized 'ae' vowel which is closely identical to preoperative and post-operative voice of the patients by controlling the values of jitter, shimmer, and glottal noise. then we analyzed the synthesized voices and compared with pre and post-operative voice. Results : 1) After inputting the preoperative and corrected values of jitter, shimmer, and glottal noise into the voice synthesis Program, voices identical to vocal Polyp Patients' Pre- and Postoperative voices withiin statistical significance were synthesized 2) After elimination of synergistic effects between three paramenter, we were able to synthesize voice identical to vocal paralysis patients' preoperative voices. 3) After inputting only slightly increased jitter, shimmer into the synthesis program, we were able to synthesize voice identical to vocal cord paralysis patients' postoperative voices. Conclusion : Voices synthesized with Dr. Speech science program were identical to patients' actual pre and postoperative voice, and clinicians will be able to give the patients more information and thus increased patients cooperability can be expected.

  • This study was conducted to determine changes of voice after consuming raw egg, apple, and pear. Ten college students vocalized /a/ before and after having raw egg, apple, and pear. Dr. Speech was utilized to obtain acoustic changes of subjects' voice. A t-test was performed to analyze changes of voice before and after consuming raw egg, apple, and pear. No significant difference was found in acoustic measurements before and after having the 3 food items. However, the subjects seemed to show some improvements in jitter, HNR, and NNE in the order of raw egg, apple and pear even though they did not reach a statistical significance. It was concluded that a more systematic research paradigm was needed in order to objectively reject or substantiate the results of the current investigation.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the Bel canto singing technique on voice quality in patients with vocal bowing and sulcus vocalis. Five patients with vocal bowing, and five patients with sulcus vocalis participated in the study. Each subject was assessed acoustically (Jitter, Shimmer, NNE) in the first and last session. Dr. Speech (version 4.0, Tiger-DRS) was used to compare acoustic parameters of pre- and post-treatment. The Bel canto singing technique consisted of breathing exercises, relaxation exercises, and phonation exercises. The results showed that the Bel canto singing technique tended to be effective on improving voice quality in patients with organic voice disorders.

  • The purpose of this study is to conduct a correlational analysis among pitch, nasalance, and acoustic quality parameters estimated by two speech analysis softwares NasalView(version 1.31), Dr. Speech 4.5(Tiger Electronics). Thirty females and 25 males with normal voice participated in the study. The Pearson correlation coefficient was determined through a statistical analysis. The results came out as follows; Firstly, there was a correlation between $F_0$ and voice quality parameters, however there was no correlation between $F_0$ and nasalance. Secondly, nasalance showed a correlation with voice quality parameters.

  • This study has investigated the basic data of untrained boys and girls' VRP. The VRP comparison was executed between 5 boys(lO to 11 years old) and girls(10 to 11 years old). The measure of VRP was implemented by using Dr. Speech 4.0(Tiger-electronics) phonetogram program. The comparison of boys and girls' maximum and minimum range, the mean of boys' maximum range is 93.68dB(SD 7.90) and girls' range is 93.12dB(SD 5.11). There was no difference and the mean of minimum range of boy is 68.08dB(SD 3.59), girl is 71.10dB(SD 3.06).

  • Our present study was performed to investigate acoustically the Chines normal adults' voices. 60 Chines normal adults (30 males and 30 females) of the age of 20 to 39 years oridyced systained vowel /a/ and, by analyzing them acoustically with Dr. Speech, we could get the fundamental frequency (Fo), jitter, shimmer, NNE. As results, on the average, male voices showed 1I8.1Hz in Fo, 0.186% in jitter, 1.12% in shimmer, and -13.7dB in NNE. And, female voices showed 252.4Hz in Fo, 0.186% in jitter, 0.81% in shimmer, and -1I.3dB in NNE. Every parameter except Fo showed no significant difference between male and female voices.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Seo Dongil's voice technique on voice quality in patient with adductor spasmodic dysphonia. One patient participated in the study. The subject was assessed acoustically (Ave Fo, Ave Int, percent speech time, percent silence time, percent voice time, percent voiceless time) and perceptually (GRBAS scales) in the first and last session. Dr. Speech (version 4.0, Tiger-DRS) was used to compare acoustic parameters of pre-and post-treatment. Seo Dongil's voice technique consisted of relaxation, breathing exercise and phonation exercise. The results were as follows: First, Seo Dongil's voice technique tented to be effective on decreasing voice break and voice stoppage in patient with adductor spasmodic dysphonia. Second, GRBAS scales showed that Seo Dongil's voice technique was effective on improving voice quality of patient with adductor spasmodic dysphonia.

  • This study compared classical operatic singing and applied music singing using the vocal assessment software, Dr. Speech and SPEAD from Lx Speech Studio. Participants in this study included: eight female operatic singers (mean 22.6 yrs, average career 7.5 yrs); eight male operatic singers (mean 25.6 yrs, average career 7.3 yrs); eight female applied music singers (mean 25.1 yrs, average career 6.1 yrs); and eight male applied music singers (mean 27.6 yrs, average career 6.8 yrs). The results demonstrated significantly higher closed quotient values in female applied music singers during singing (p<.05). In addition, higher closed quotient values in speaking were presented in male classical singers and longer MPT was obtained in female operatic singers (p<.05). Furthermore, singer's formants were identified in all male operatic singers and in three female operatic singers. In contrast, only one applied music male and one female singer showed singer's formants while singing.

  • The aim of this study was to survey 'voice preference' of children from among three voice pitches, which are high-pitch, mid-pitch and low pitch, and understand acoustic characteristics of the best voice chosen. To record distinctive pitches, Dr. Speech(ver. 4.0 Tiger Electronics) was used and we analyzed their choices. Also, we measured subglottal air pressure in aerodynamic analyze and phonatory aerodynamic system(Model 6600, KAY) was used. As a result children preferred to the low-pitch yet there was not any difference by sex. We fined them to prefer higher HNR voice to lower jitter and shimmer voice rate.
