  • This study examined which factors influence the parental borrowing for children's college education in the U.S. A double-hurdle model was applied to analyze both the parents’decision to borrow and the amount of borrowing. Parents’income and total costs of college attendance had significant positive effects on both the decision to borrow and the amount borrowed. Students’income, parents’cash and savings had significant negative impacts on the amount borrowed, while home equity and the students’expected future income were significant positive factors. Greater amounts of grants significantly increased the probability of borrowing, but reduced the loan amount. Parents with smaller household size, and those who were college graduates were more likely to borrow. White parents borrowed greater amounts than did their non-White counterparts. The age of the student was a significant negative factor in the probability, as well as the level, of borrowing.

The responses were gathered from both married and unmarried people, primarily in Seoul and the metropolitan area, of ages ranging from 25 to 44. The sample for this study was comprised of data from 399 double-income households. Crosstab and multinominal logistic regression models were used to analyze the data. The results were as follows. First, dual-income families choose a pooling system as their income arrangement. Second, variables determining the income arrangement were the husband's age, school attainment, annual average income, and average working hour per day. Third, variables that affected the household expenses arrangement included the husband's level of schooling attained and the husband’s job type. • In the present study we examined clothing expenditure patterns and related variables in Korea. In addition we analyzed the differences of clothing expenditure patterns between overall overspenders and non-overspenders. We use the Family Income and Expenditure Study published by the National Statistical Office of Korea. Double logarithm functional forms were used to adjust the normality of sample distribution and multiple regression analyses and t-test were utilized as a statistical tools. The present study was divided into four folders. First the income elasticity of clothing expenditures was examined by different groups such as age job and education levels of households as percentage change of clothing expenditures to a percentage change of income. Second to analyze the effects of demogtraphic and socio-economic variables on clothing expenditure we utlized the standardized coefficients in the separate regression equation by demographic and socio-economic variables. Third using spending to income ratio we investigated the differnces of the clothing expenditure patterns between overall overspenders and non-overspenders. Fourth the effects of independent variables by ovespenders and non-overspenders werediscussed.

  • An Ethnographic Decision Model (EDM) to explore socioeconomic, cultural, and psychological factors related to the attitudes toward childless family was developed in this study. From college students' protocol writings, this research found that the participants in general had conservative views about childless families. They tended to simplify childless families as either infertile couples or DINK (Double Income No Kids) couples. The participants explained why they decided to have or not to have children in the future. They seemed to believe in a traditional family structure and idealize parental roles, while recognizing the high economic and psychological cost of rearing children. They claimed that Korean society set high standards for parents, which were too difficult to reach. The participants, having been educated to believe in self-actualization through their successful careers, struggled to choose between a family with children and one without children. This study was conducted with a holistic view, and highlighted the importance of interactions between traditional ideology about the family and socioeconomic contexts when interpreting college students' perspectives on childless family.

  • This study attempted to examine the employment instability on consumer's use of credit as a financing medium. The purpose of this study was 1) to examine the effect of employment related factors on consumers' use of credit; 2) to compare the results between the two different economic situations. A conceptual framework was developed based on the permanent income hypothesis, family stress theory, and the previous empirical studies. Using data on working households ih the 1992 and 1998 Survey of Consumer Finances (SCF), double-hurdle analyses were conducted. The results suggested that employment related factors that measured employment stability were significantly related to the likelihood of having an outstanding balance on their credit account but were not the influential factors in determining the amount of the outstanding balance. Among other factors, resources factor played the most significant role in determining both the likelihood of having an outstanding balance and the amount of the balance. Although the 1992 and 1998 data represent economic downturn and economic prosperous period, the effects of the factors including employment instability factors were similar between the two periods. This imply that employment instability has increased even in the economic prosperous period. From the findings, several implications for policy makers, credit industry, and financial educators were suggested.

  • The major purpose of this research was to investigate the causal relationships among working wives' work-family conflict, socialization of housework, and home management satisfaction. the double ABCX model of family stress and adaptation provided the theoretical framework for this study. the data were recruited from working wives who had more than one pre-school child. The respondents were asked to complete the self-administered questionnaires, and the responses of 536 working wives were used for the final analysis. basically Cronbach's α to the reliability of major variables, frequencies, percentages, means, standard deviation, pearson's correlation coefficients, and LISREL 7 program were performed to test the research model. The results of this study can be summarized as follows : 1. The frequency of work-family conflict was affected by the flexibility of work time and wives' income. 2. The severity of wok-family conflict was directly influenced by the frequency of the conflict, the flexibility of work-time, and wives' education level. 3. The variables influencing the degree of socialization of housework were found to be the frequency and the severity of work-family conflict, wives' education, and the degree of husband's participation in housework. 4. The higher degree of home management satisfaction was associated with the higher level of family member's health status, the greater degree of the flexibility of work-time, and the greater degree of husband's participation in household labor.

  • This research was aimed at finding clues of improving behavioral affordance of the residential environment by scrutinizing change of the residents' behavior in a livingroom depending on the child's development stage. 30 double-income families with one child were the subjects of depths interview, survey, observation of this research, who were residents of 3-bedroom apartment housing in Seoul. They presented obvious different behavioral patterns according to their child's development stage. Breeding and playing behavior were prior to the others when their child was in childhood, then relaxing with TV and PC behavior were getting superior when their child was in school period. It is important that residents perceive that the numerous types of behavior may take place in a livingroom, some of which has originated in our long residential culture. And then real housing should be provided to them that has proper behavioral affordance to support all those behavior. Housings with minimum walls and rooms would make it possible. A family has its inner dynamics can live a sustainable life in that housing as a home, that lasts along their whole life.

Respondents were 214 married people residing in Seoul and its outskirts by accidential sampling. The collected data were analyzed by SPSS 12.0 program using frequency, mean, average, factor analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Duncan's multiple range test, multiple regression and legit analysis. Result of this study was as follows. Housing values were classified into three categories named as individualism oriented housing value, tradition oriented housing value, and economy oriented housing value. Housing values were different by respondents groups. For example, individualism oriented housing value showed difference according to age and housing area. Tradition oriented housing value showed difference according to sex, occupation, and period of residence, while economy oriented housing value showed difference according to housing type, and home ownership. The younger than the elder, and Seoul resident than outskirts resident had higher economy oriented housing value. Also home owner than tenant, and the higher tradition oriented group had stronger intention to live in cohousing than others.
