  • ${\ulcorner}Gogeumdoseojipseong{\lrcorner}$, it has been compiled by Chenmenglei(1651-1723). This large encyclopedia was published in 1125 during Ohing dynasty of China in the reign of the Kangxi emperor. The medical parts of this encyclopedia was titled the name of Yibuquanlu, but it is not correct. KIOM(Korea Institute of oriental Medicine) researched the compilation and publication of the original book of this and the process of introduction to Chosun with its woodblock-printed book for making database of this book. Even more, we analyzed the structure of this book and apprehended the historical significance about medical interchange between Korea and China by this book. As the result, we found that the most part of this large encyclopedia quotedfrom ${\ulcorner}Donguibogam{\lrcorner}$ of Chosun, then it was back to Chosun and taken a part to medical books such as ${\ulcorner}Imwonkyungjaejis{\lrcorner}$, ${\ulcorner}Uijongsonikr{\lrcorner}$.

  • Objectives: Head symptoms, such as headache and dizziness, are commonly presented in clinical practice. Although Donguibogam, the representative book of Korean medicine, contains many prescriptions for head symptoms, they are difficult to learn and apply because of the vast numbers. The aim of this study was to simplify and visualize the vast contents of Donguibogam by network analysis. Methods: 127 prescriptions for head symptoms, found in Donguibogam, were entered into a Microsoft office Excel 2013 file. This was used as a database for network analysis using the NetMiner 4 program. Results: Through network analysis, six networks for prescriptions for head symptoms in Donguibogam were established. The first network is similar to the herb composition of Cheongsangsahwa-tang (prescriptions for hwa-yeol syndrome). The second network is similar to the herb composition of Yanghyulgupung-tang (prescriptions for hyul-heo syndrome). The third network is similar to the herb composition of Sangcheongbaekbuja-hwan (prescriptions for dam-eum syndrome). The fourth network is similar to the herb composition of Heukseok-dan (prescriptions for yang-heo syndrome). The fifth network is similar to the herb composition of Boheo-eum (prescriptions for chil-jeong syndrome). The sixth network is similar to the herb composition of Bangpungtongseong-san (prescriptions for hwa-yeol syndrome). Conclusions: The results of the network analysis of 127 prescriptions for head symptoms in Donguibogam suggest that there are five major causes of head symptoms (hwa-yeol, hyul-heo, dam-eum, yang-heo, and chil-jeong), and that it is possible to prescribe Cheongsangsahwa-tang, Bangpungtongseong-san, Yanghyulgupung-tang, Sangcheongbaekbuja-hwan, Heukseok-dan, or Boheo-eum depending on the major causes.

  • Some researchers who once studied Uirimchualyo have paid good attention to the connection between Donguibogam & Uirimchualyo because of their similarity. So, after reviewing the Sequel of Uirimchualyo, in terms of its editing purpose and the list of contents, especially focused on throat sickness, here I report on the conclusions I come to. Firstly, the Sequel of Uirimchualyo was a monumental edition in concert with the enthronement of Kwanghaegun, and printed at demand of new medical knowledge, which was required to add to the existing Uirimchualyo, written by best-noted doctor, Yang Yesoo, and in need of simpler medical textbook to help people's recovery from the damage of Japanese invasion in the year of Imjin & Jeongyoo. Secondly, all the contents read in the Sequel of Uirimchualyo, were quoted from Kogumuigam, compiled by Kong Shin, Manbyonghoichun, edited by Kong Jeonghyun, Dangaeshim bupbuyo, published by Bang Kwang, and Uihakipmun, edited by Lee Cheon. Thirdly, The reason of similarity between Uirimchualyo and Donguibogam is that the Sequel of Uirimchualyo was made by adding new medical knowledge to the existing Uirimchualyo, and that many of contents of the Sequel of Uirimchualyo were quoted in Donguibogam. Fourthly, regarding throat sickness, medical knowledge on acute fever was supplemented in the Sequel of Uirimchualyo, and the emergency medical treatment methodology like "blow-in-throat" was newly introduced. This treatment is worth being employed to treat acute suffocation with swollen throat in modern acute-infection sicknesses. Fifthly, the Sequel of Uirimchualyo made up for brief description of the existing Uirimchualyo, offered more convenience of users compared with too overscaled Hyangyakjipseongbang & Uibangryuchui, and was more complete than Kookupbang which was loose, incomplete, and sometimes risky. And it took firm hold before Donguibogam, and eventually made a great contribution toward Donguibogam.
