  • This report describes the retained surgical gauze in two dogs that had ovariohysterectomy previously. The elapsed time between surgery and diagnosis of retained surgical gauze in two dogs was 30 and 16 months, respectively. Radiographic signs included localized abdominal mass (case 1, 2) and soft tissue swelling (case 2). Retained surgical gauze was imaged by survey radiography, ultrasonography and computed tomography (CT). Ultrasonography revealed a hypoechoic mass with irregular hyperechoic center in case 1, and hypoechoic mass with oval hyperechoic center and acoustic shadowing in case 2. In CT examination of case 2, hyperdense mass with a thick peripheral rim enhancing in contrast study was shown. Cytologic examination of both cases revealed abscess and granuloma respectively. The lesions were surgically removed. The possibility of retained surgical gauze should be considered in animals with a history of previous surgery with abnormal mass.

  • The objective of this retrospective study was to investigate the prevalence of retinal diseases in dogs presented to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, Seoul National University from April 2004 to December 2005. Sixty-five dogs (120 eyes) with retinal diseases involving blindness were included in this study. Age, breed, and gender data for all breeds were collected from medical records documenting vision loss. Generalized progressive retinal atrophy (gPRA) was the most common manifestation. Other prevalent findings included sudden acquired retinal degeneration (SARD) and retinal detachment (RD). Bilateral gPRA was found in 32 dogs with a female-to-male ratio of 1 : 1. The mean $age{\pm}SD$ of all dogs in this group was $4.66{\pm}2.30$ years with a range of 3 to 12 years. Breeds with highest prevalence of gPRA were Miniature Schnauzer (24/32, $mean{\pm}SD$ age: $3.79{\pm}0.78$ yr) and Poodle (2/32, $6.50{\pm}0.71$ yr). Twelve dogs (24 eyes) were diagnosed with SARD bilateraly, ranging from 3 to 13 years of age ($mean{\pm}SD:\;6.91{\pm}2.61$ yr). There were no abnormalities in fundus of 11 dogs at presentation. Electroretinography (ERG) without anesthesia was performed in 7 dogs, and all response was totally extinguished. Retinal detachment was identified in 21 dogs (32 eyes): 11 bilateral and 10 unilateral (7 right eye, 3 left eye). The most common breed was Shih Tzu (15/21, $mean{\pm}SD$ age: $4.39{\pm}3.24$ yr). Four other breeds comprised the remaining 6 cases (8 eyes). The everall mean age of the group was: $4.18{\pm}2.89$ years (range 0.8 to 14 years) with a female-to-male ratio of 1 : 1.1 (10 females, and 11 males).

  • The object of this study was to evaluate the durations from onset of neurological sign until surgery and regaining of the deep pain perception (DPP) after decompression as prognostic indicators for the outcome of decompression surgery in dogs with thoracolumbar intervertebral disc disease (IVDD). The compression lesions in the thoracolumbar vertebrae were localized by plain radiograph, computed tomography and neurological examination in 28 dogs with hindlimb paralysis. The follow up was carried out for 6 months after laminectomy. During the follow up, regaining DPP and walking ability were evaluated. Improvement to normal or paretic gait after surgery was judged as success of the surgical treatment. The success rate of surgical treatment was 70 % (7 out of 10 dogs) when surgical intervention was carried out within 24 hours but 38.9 % (7 out of 18) over 24 hours (P<0.05). The success rate of surgical treatment was 87.5 % (14 out of 16 dogs) when DDP was regained within 5 weeks after surgery but there was 0 % (0 out of 12 dogs) when DDP was not regained within 5 weeks after surgery (P<0.05). Other parameters such as compression rate in CT scan and laminectomy methods did not related with the success of the surgery. These results suggested that the time of surgery after onset and duration of regaining of DPP after decompression were useful parameter to predict the success of surgical treatment for thoracolumbar disc herniation in dogs.

  • A 13-year-old, female, Shih-tzu and a 10-year-old, female, Yorkshire terrier were presented with ulcerative keratitis caused by corneal endothelial degeneration. Generalized corneal edema, conjunctival hyperemia, focal corneal pigmentation, corneal neovascularization, sub-epithelial bullae, and positive fluorescein staining were observed during ophthalmic examinations. Thermokeratoplasty was performed on the overall edematous corneas. Healing of the cornea was completed within 25 days and corneal ulceration has not recurred after healing of the cornea in both cases. Other ocular complications were not observed except for a slight increase in corneal pigmentation. According to this study, thermokeratoplasty could be an effective treatment for corneal ulceration secondary to corneal endothelial diseases in dogs.

  • This retrospective study reviewed the clinical and diagnostic features, therapeutic outcome and compilations of interventional ductal occlusion in 37 dogs with patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). Malteses and female dogs were over-presented. Bounding pulse and left basal continuous murmur were most common findings in physical examination, while the differential cyanosis was rarely observed. Left ventricular (LV) enlargement patterns and sinus tachycardia were common in the ECG. Typical radiographic findings included LV elongation and triple bumps indicating left atrial (LA), aortic and pulmonary dilation. Echocardiographic features were typical shunt flow at the ductus arteriosus and marked LV dilation with mild to moderate mitral regurgitation (MR). The 32 of 37 dogs were interventionally treated with either thromboemolic coils (TCE) or Amplatz canine ductal occluder (ACDO). Transient hemoglobinuria caused by incomplete closure was occurred in 2 dogs treated with TCE, although the hemoglobinuria was disappeared within a week of intervention. The dislodgement of occlusion device was occurred in 2 dogs with TCE and 1 dog with ACDO. However there were no significant complications associated with this dislodgement, since those were dislodged at the lower pulmonary vasculature. We also found that no serious complications and no further medical intervention in 29 dogs having long-term follow-ups.

  • Canine infectious respiratory disease (CIRD), also known as infectious tracheobronchitis or kennel cough occurs in a multiple-dog environment such as a shelter. In this study, we were collected 300 of nasal swab samples from dogs and 145 of environmental samples from a shelter to investigate respiratory pathogens of dogs in the Gwangju metropolitan city animal shelter from February to October, 2019. Bacteria cultures for isolation of Bordetella (B.) bronchiseptica and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests were performed for detection of eleven canine respiratory pathogens, namely Mycoplasma (M.) cynos, canine distemper virus (CDV), canine influenza virus (CIV), canine parainfluenza virus (CPIV), canine respiratory coronavirus (CRCoV), alpha-coronavirus (CCoV), canine pneumovirus (CnPnV), canine hepacivirus (CHeV), canine adenovirus type 2 (CAdV-2), canine herpesvirus-1 (CHV-1) and canine bocavirus (CBoV). Among 300 nasal swab samples, 148 samples (49.3%) were positive for at least one pathogens. CHV-1 was the most common pathogen, found in 95/300 (31.7%) samples. Subsequently, M. cynos (22.0%), B. bronchiseptica (2.3%), CPIV (2.0%), CBoV (1.7%), CCoV (0.7%) were detected. The detection rates of M. cynos and CHV-1 according to the duration of stay in the shelter were statistically significant. Among environmental samples, M. cynos, CCoV, CBoV and CHV-1 were detected in 45/145 (31.0%). These results indicated the need for disease control and prevention systems in the shelter.

  • Myiasis is a relatively common infection of animals kept as pets, although only 1 case of canine myiasis has been described so far in the Republic of Korea. In the present study, we report an additional case of canine wound myiasis with identification of its causative agent, Lucilia sericata. An 8-year-old male Siberian husky dog was referred with anorexia, vomiting, and diarrhea to the Chungbuk National University Veterinary Medical Center, Cheongju-si (city), Chungcheongbuk-do (province), Korea in July 2013. Physical examination indicated the patient had a deep wound filled with a maggot swarm as a left gluteal lesion. A total of 216 maggots were removed by forceps, and the wounded area was sponged with gauzes and disinfected with 70% alcohol and a povidone-iodine solution. After daily care and suturing the wound, the patient was discharged at day 19 after admission. Recovered worms possessed morphological characteristics similar to those of L. sericata, namely, a sub-cylindrical body with 6-8 lobed anterior spiracles, round shaped with a button surrounded by a peritremal ring with no gaps, and similar distances between dorsal, median, and outer papillae of the 12th segment. Additionally, cox1 partial sequences (528 bp) obtained in the present study showed 100% identity with those of L. sericata (GenBank no. KT272854.1). L. sericata is indicated as a pathogen of myiasis infection not only in humans, but also in animals kept as pets in Korea.

  • The companion animal related businesses are rapidly growing as the pet population increases in Korea. In this study, we analyzed the market trends of companion animal food and products to offer basic information that can be used in related policies and industries. The data were collected using Nielsen Korea's wholesale/retail distribution channels. As a result, in the case of companion dog food, PB products of domestic companies showed the highest market share with 24.6%, and the ratio of domestic companies(54.8%) was higher than that of import companies(45.2%). Domestic PB products also had the highest market share(16.5%) in companion cat food, however, the ratio of import companies(71.6%) was higher than that of domestic companies(28.4%). In the case of the market share of the companion animal products(toys, oral and bath supplies), Nosework mats from domestic companies were top ranked in the toy category(28.0%). Oral products(62.5%) and bath products(59.5%) from domestic companies were also having a higher market share than import companies. Our research may help domestic companion animal product companies to steadily increase market share and the amount of their export.

  • The purpose of this project was to improve the stability of a pair of leather socks for use on snowy days in the collection of the National Museum of Korea (Namsan1567) by conducting conservation treatment and restoring the socks to their original form for use in research and exhibition. Leather socks are referred to in ancient documents with names combining the word "mal" for socks with a term indicating their material (e.g., pimal, meaning leather socks; nokpimal, meaning deer leather socks; jangpimal, meaning roe deer leather socks, or lipimal, meaning racoon dog leather socks) and are mentioned mostly in connection with Jeju Island. Related documents include the Seungjeongwon ilgi (Daily Record of the Grand Secretariat), Injaeilnok (Diary of Injae Jo Geukseon), and Hamel's Journal and a Description of the Kingdom of Joseon. Extant examples of ancient leather socks display the same form as beoseon (traditional Korean socks) and are made of either leather or a combination of leather and fabric. It is likely that such leather socks were worn on Jeju Island to protect the feet from the cold. A condition survey of the leather socks was first conducted to establish a plan for their conservation treatment. Since the socks were in rather poor condition, it was decided to identify their original form through an investigation of relics and pertinent previous studies. The socks were cleaned in consideration of results of the condition survey, and the missing parts around the necks of the socks were reinforced in a reversible manner using counting stitches with cloth dyed to match the original color. Since the bottoms of the socks had lost much of their original form due to deterioration and disintegration in the leather, supports were made and inserted inside the socks to help retain their shape. Through these processes, the structure and characteristics of the socks and the techniques used in their production could be analyzed, their condition was stabilized, and their original form was recovered.
