  • In a cloud environment, performance degradation, or even downtime, of virtual machines (VMs) usually appears gradually along with anomalous states of VMs. To better characterize the state of a VM, all possible performance metrics are collected. For such high-dimensional datasets, this article proposes a feature extraction algorithm based on unsupervised fuzzy linear discriminant analysis with kernel (UFKLDA). By introducing the kernel method, UFKLDA can not only effectively deal with non-Gaussian datasets but also implement nonlinear feature extraction. Two sets of experiments were undertaken. In discriminability experiments, this article introduces quantitative criteria to measure discriminability among all classes of samples. The results show that UFKLDA improves discriminability compared with other popular feature extraction algorithms. In detection accuracy experiments, this article computes accuracy measures of an anomaly detection algorithm (i.e., C-SVM) on the original performance metrics and extracted features. The results show that anomaly detection with features extracted by UFKLDA improves the accuracy of detection in terms of sensitivity and specificity.

  • The skin-inspired multimodal soft sensors have been developed through multidisciplinary approaches to mimic the sensing ability with high sensitivity and mechanical durability of human skin. For practical application, although the stimulus discriminability against a complex stimulus composed of various mechanical and thermal stimuli experienced in daily life is essential, it still shows a low level actually. In this paper, we first introduce the operating mechanisms and representative studies of the unimodal soft sensor, and then discuss the recent research trend in the multimodal soft sensors and the stimulus discriminability.

  • In a template-matchig-based speech recognition syste, excessive weight given to perceptually unimportant spectral variations is undesirable for discriminating among acoustically similar words. By introducing a simple threshold-type nonlinearity applied to the distance metric, the word recognition performance can be improved for a vocabulary with similar sounding words, without modifying the system structure.

  • Many applications dealing with image management need a technique for removing duplicate images or for grouping related (near-duplicate) images in a database. This paper proposes a concentric circle-based image signature which makes it possible to detect near-duplicates rapidly and accurately. An image is partitioned by radius and angle levels from the center of the image. Feature values are calculated using the average or variation between the partitioned sub-regions. The feature values distributed in sequence are formed into an image signature by hash generation. The hashing facilitates storage space reduction and fast matching. The performance was evaluated through discriminability and robustness tests. Using these tests, the particularity among the different images and the invariability among the modified images are verified, respectively. In addition, we also measured the discriminability and robustness by the distribution analysis of the hashed bits. The proposed method is robust to various modifications, as shown by its average detection rate of 98.99%. The experimental results showed that the proposed method is suitable for near-duplicate detection in large databases.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare radiopacity and radiographic discriminability of various FRC-Posts. Six FRC-Posts were investigated ; 1) FRC Postec Plus (Ivoclar Vivadent AG, Schaan, Liechtenstein), 2) Snowlight (Carbotech, Lewis center, OH, USA), 3) Dentin Post (Komet Brasseler, Lamgo, Germany), 4) Rely-X Fiber Post (3M ESPE, St.paul, MN, USA), 5) D.T.-Light Post (BISCO, Schaumburg, IL,USA), 6) Luxapost (DMG, Hamburg, Germany) The radiographs of each post with a reference 1 mm / 2 mm aluminum step-wedge was taken using digital sensor. The optical density were calculated by gray value of $10{\times}10$ pixel and compared in mm Al equivalent at five points. Six maxillary incisors of similar radiopacity were used. Radiographs of posts in Mx. incisors of lingual side of dry mandible were taken. We showed radiographs and asked the questionnaire to 3 radiologists, 3 endodontists, 3 general practitioners. The questionnaire was comprised of choices of the highest, lowest radiopaque individual post and the choices of best discriminable post at apical, coronal area. The following results were obtained. 1. Each post system showed various radiopacity. 2. There was change of discriminability between each post and simulated specimens regardless of examiner. Although each post showed various radiopacity, the difference of radiopacity did not affect on discriminability.

  • In this paper, we analyze the discriminability of features for the classification of transient signals with an ambient noise in a shallow water. For the classification of the transient signals, robust features for the variance of a noise are required due to a low SNR under a marine environment. In the modelling the ambient noise in shallow water, theoretical noise model, Wenz's observation data from the shallow water, and Yule-walker filter are used. Discrimination of each feature of the transient signals with an additive ambient noise is analyzed by utilizing a Fisher score. As the analysis of a classification accuracy about the transient signals of 24 classes using the selected features with a high discriminability, the features selected in the environment without a noise relatively have a good classification accuracy. From the analyzed results, we finally select a total 16 features out of 28 features. The recognition using the selected features results in the classification accuracy of 92% in SNR 20dB using Multi-class SVM.

  • Background: As neutron fields are always accompanied by gamma rays, it is essential to distinguish neutrons from gamma rays in the detection of neutrons. Neutrons and gamma rays can be separated by pulse shape discrimination (PSD) methods. Recently, we performed characterization of a stilbene scintillator detector and an EJ-301 liquid scintillator detector with a high-speed digitizer DT5730 and investigated optimized PSD variables for both detectors. This study is for providing a basis for developing fast neutron/gamma-ray dual-particle imager. Materials and Methods: We conducted PSD experiments using stilbene scintillator and EJ-301 liquid scintillator and evaluated neutron and gamma ray discriminability of each PSD method with a $^{137}Cs$ gamma source and a $^{252}Cf$ neutron source. We implemented digital signal processing techniques to apply two PSD methods - the charge comparison (CC) method and the constant time discrimination (CTD) method - to distinguish neutrons from gamma rays. We tried to find optimized PSD variables giving the best discriminability in a given experimental condition. Results and Discussion: For the stilbene scintillator detector, the charge comparison method and the constant time discrimination method both delivered the PSD FOM values of 1.7. For the EJ-301 liquid scintillator detector, both PSD methods delivered the PSD FOM values of 1.79. With the same PSD variables, PSD performance was excellent in $300{\pm}100keVee$, $500{\pm}100keVee$, and $700{\pm}100keVee$ energy regions. This result shows that we can achieve an effective discrimination of neutrons from gamma rays using these scintillator detector systems. Conclusion: We applied both PSD methods to a stilbene and a liquid scintillator and optimized the PSD performance represented by FOM values. We observed a good separation performance of both scintillators combined with a high-speed digitizer and digital PSD. These results will provide reference values for the dual-particle imager we are developing, which can image both fast neutrons and gamma rays simultaneously.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate and standardize the four scales of Questionnaire for the Sasang Constitution Classification II (QSCCII). QSCCII is newly prepared by statistical item analysis and is designed to examine its diagnostic discriminability. QSCCII is administered to 1366 random informants. From the survey, we could get the data for the standardization. The criteria of standardization are based on the data from 265 informants who are examined by professionals. Collectted data are analyzed by internal consistency, variation analysis(ANOVA), Duncan test and discrimination analysis of SPSS PC+ V4.0 program. The results are as follows reliability of four scales for QSCCII is relatively valid. The internal consistency of Tae-yang(太陽) (太陽) scale is Cronbach's a=0.5708. That of So-yang(少陽) scale is a=0.5708. That of Tae-eum(太陰) scale is a =0.5922. That of So-eum(少陰) scale is a=0.6319. 2. There is a significant difference between each group through variation analysis of four scales. 3. The process of standardization is based on the average value and standard deviation with respect to age and sex difference of each criteria 4. This study suggests a source of standardization of Sasang Constitution Classification by providing norms in which the differences of age, sex, and number of items are taken into deep consideration. QSCC Ⅱ, therefore, can be applied to every age(the 10's to the 60's) and sex groups. 5. The recalculation of the raw-score to standard value (T-score) shows that the diagnostic discriminability (Hit-ratio: 70.08%) of QSCC Ⅱ brings about 37% improvement than proportional chance criteria (33.33%). Especially, Hit-ratios of Tae-eum In(74.5%) and So-eum In(70.8%) are higher than that of So-yang In(60.0%). 6. QSCC has discriminability only to male informants. Compared with QSCC, however, QSCC II has relatively efficient discriminability both to male and female informants. 7. These results would be a demonstration of the fact that the QSCC II could be used as a tool for sasang constitution classification.
