  • This paper presents some important issues in modeling rock behaviour around an underground opening at depth which characterized as stress-induced fractural failure of rock. Unlike other conventional modeling approaches, stress-induced rock failure is highly complex process due to its own heterogeneous and discrete natures. Because of this complexity, many researchers has been struggled to mimic such processes as close as possible to reality with various approaches in both analytical, and numerical approaches for past few decades. Such approaches which are based on continuum mechanics, analytical fracture mechanics, and DEM(Discrete Element Method) were explored in this paper, and fundamental shortcomings for each approaches were illustrated here. In addition, DEM approach using $PFC^{2D}$(Particle Flow Code) was also implemented and illuminated in this paper and discuss the improvement and considerations for the future research.

  • This paper focuses on the flexural behavior of RC beams externally strengthened with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) fabric. A non-linear finite element (FE) analysis strategy is proposed to support the beam flexural behavior experimental analysis. A development system (QUEBRA2D/FEMOOP programs) has been used to accomplish the numerical simulation. Appropriate constitutive models for concrete, rebars, CFRP and bond-slip interfaces have been implemented and adjusted to represent the composite system behavior. Interface and truss finite elements have been implemented (discrete and embedded approaches) for the numerical representation of rebars, interfaces and composites.

  • In the analysis pre-cast large panel structures, we can use the new discrete analyzing method to be consisted of rigid bodies. Because the pre-cast panels we still more rigid than the connection, the rigid element method is more efficient numerical method than F. E. M. The characteristics of R. E. M. is that strains in element are not occurred by external loadings and the deformation of the structures by external loadings is transmitted through springs around elements. In this study, we focus on the comparison of the results from the R. E. M. and the F. E. M. in order to establish the validity of the R. E. M. to analysis of pre-cast panel structures.

  • 적층판의 동적거동에 대한 유한요소해석모델개발을 목적으로 전단변형을 적합하게 고려한 적층판이론에 대한 변분원리를 유도하였다. 유도방법은 Sandhu 등에 의해 개발된 다변수 경계치문제의 변분원리이론을 따랐으며, 지배방정식의 미분연산자 매트릭스를 self-adjoint로 만들기 위하여 convolution을 이중선형사상으로 사용하였다. 유도된 적층판의 범함수에는 경계조건, 초기조건뿐만 아니라 유한요소해석모델에서 생길 수 있는 요소간 불연속조건도 포함시킬 수 있다. 상태변수의 적합함수공간을 확장하거나 특정조건을 적용하므로서 다양한 형태의 범함수를 유도할 수 있으며, 이를 통해 다양한 유한요소해석모델의 개발이 가능함을 논하였다.

DEM을 이용한 아스팔트 혼합물의 열전도 예측 (Heat Transfer Analysis of Cylindrical Asphalt Specimen using DEM)

  • PURPOSES : Conductive and convective heat transfer simulations for an asphalt mixture were made by using discrete element method (DEM) and similarity principle. METHODS : In this research, virtual specimens composed of discrete element method particles were generated according to four different predetermined particle size distribution curves. Temperature variations of the four different particles for a given condition were estimated and were compared with measurements and analytical solutions. RESULTS : The virtual specimen with mixed particles and with the smallest particle show very good agreement with laboratory test results and analytical solutions. As particle size decreases, better heat transfer simulation can be performed due to smaller void ratio and more contact points and areas. In addition, by utilizing the similarity principle of thermal properties and corresponding time unit, analytical time can be drastically reduced. CONCLUSIONS : It is concluded that the DEM asphalt mixture specimens with similarity principle could be used to predict the temperature variation for a given condition. It is observed that the void ratio has critical effect on prediction of temperature variation. Comparing the prediction for a 4 mm particle specimen with a mixed particle specimen, it is also concluded that predicting the mixed particle specimen temperature is much more efficient considering the number of particles that are directly associated with computational time in DEM analysis.

  • 연약지반의 깊이차, 연약대 및 경사면 등에 따른 지반침하의 영향에 의해 석탑구조물은 기울어짐, 변형과 균열현상 등이 발생함으로써 석탑구조물의 장기적인 보존에 문제점이 발생되고 있다. 하지만 국내의 경우 연약지반 특성을 고려한 상부 석탑구조물의 거동에 대한 연구는 미비한 실정이다. 따라서 본 연구는 연약지반 특성에 따른 역학적 분석을 통해 연약지반의 깊이차와 기울어짐 발생에 따른 영향을 고려하여 석탑구조물에 끼치는 구조적인 영향을 파악하고, 개별요소해석기법을 통해 연약지반 특성에 따른 석탑구조물의 구조모델링 및 구조해석을 수행하고자 한다.

  • In the present study, a numerical simulation of passenger evacuation in a subway station was performed. Algorithm for passenger flow analysis based on DEM(Discrete Element Method) has been improved to simulate passenger flow in detailed geometry. The effect of grid density was assessed in the present study to show the advantage of using finer grid in the simulation. The method of coupling passenger flow and fire simulation has also been investigated to analyze passenger evacuation flow under fire. In this method the CO distributions in the subway station was used to assess fire hazards of passenger by means of FED(Fractional Effective Dose) model. Using the coupled algorithm a simulation for passenger evacuation flow and fire analysis were performed simultaneously in the simplified subway station. This algorithm could be used in the design of subway station for the purpose of passengers' safety in case of fire.

Earthquake behavior of M1 minaret of historical Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Blue Mosque)

  • Minarets are almost the inevitable part of Mosques in Islam and according to some, from a philosophical point of view, today they symbolize the spiritual elevation of man towards God. Due to slenderness, minarets are susceptible to earthquakes and wind loads. They are mostly built in a masonry style by using cut limestone blocks or occasionally by using bricks. In this study, one minaret (M1 Minaret) of one of the charmest mosques of Turkey, Sultan Ahmed Mosque, popularly known as Blue Mosque, built between 1609 and 1616 on the order of Sultan Ahmed by the architect Mehmet Agha is investigated under some registered earthquake loads. According to historical records, a great earthquake hit Istanbul and/or its close proximity approximately every 250 years. Ottomans tackled with the problem of building earthquake resistant, slender minarets by starting to use forged iron connectors with lead as a filler to fix them to the upper and lower and to adjacent stones instead of using traditional mortar only. Thus, the discrete stones are able to transfer tensile forces in some sense. This study investigates the contribution of lead to the energy absorption capacity of the minaret under extensive earthquakes occurred in the region. By using the software ANSYS/LS-DYNA in modelling and investigating the minaret nonlinearly, it is found out that under very big recorded earthquakes, the connectors of vertical cast iron-lead mechanism play very important role and help to keep the structure safe.

  • A numerical simulation of passenger evacuation in a subway station was performed by coupling the passenger flow analysis and the fire simulation. The algorithm of the passenger flow analysis was based on a DEM (Discrete Element Method) using the potential map of the direction vector for each passenger. This algorithm was improved in the present study as to use finer grid smaller than a passenger in order to resolve detailed geometry of the station and to resolve the behavior of passengers in the bottleneck at the ticket gate considering the collision of passengers to a wall or with other passengers. In the fire simulation, the CO distribution predicted by using CFD was used to take into account the effect of toxic gases on the passengers' mobility. The methodology proposed in the present study could be used in designing safer subway station in case of fire occurrence.
