Coupling non-matching finite element discretizations in small-deformation inelasticity: Numerical integration of interface variables

  • Finite element simulations of solid mechanics problems often involve the use of Non-Confirming Meshes (NCM) to increase accuracy in capturing nonlinear behavior, including damage and plasticity, in part of a solid domain without an undue increase in computational costs. In the presence of material nonlinearity and plasticity, higher-order variables are often needed to capture nonlinear behavior and material history on non-conforming interfaces. The most popular formulations for coupling non-conforming meshes are dual methods that involve the interpolation of a traction field on the interface. These methods are subject to the Ladyzhenskaya-Babuska-Brezzi (LBB) stability condition, and are therefore limited in their implementation with the higher-order elements needed to capture nonlinear material behavior. Alternatively, the enriched discontinuous Galerkin approach (EDGA) (Haikal and Hjelmstad 2010) is a primal method that provides higher order kinematic fields on the interface, and in which interface tractions are computed from local finite element estimates, therefore facilitating its implementation with nonlinear material models. The inclusion of higher-order interface variables, however, presents the issue of preserving material history at integration points when a increase in integration order is needed. In this study, the enriched discontinuous Galerkin approach (EDGA) is extended to the case of small-deformation plasticity. An interface-driven Gauss-Kronrod integration rule is proposed to enable adaptive enrichment on the interface while preserving history-dependent material data at existing integration points. The method is implemented using classical J2 plasticity theory as well as the pressure-dependent Drucker-Prager material model. We show that an efficient treatment of interface variables can improve algorithmic performance and provide a consistent approach for coupling non-conforming meshes in inelasticity.

  • Various methods have been proposed for the time series prediction. Most of the conventional methods only optimize parameters of mathematical models, but to construct an appropriate functional form of the model is more difficult in the first place. We employ the Genetic Programming (GP) to construct the functional form of prediction models. Our method is distinguished because the model parameters are optimized by using Back-Propagation (BP)-like method and the prediction model includes discontinuous functions, such as if and max, as node functions for describing complicated phenomena.   • 불연속적 거동이 탁월한 벽식 프리캐스트 구조물을 해석하기 위한 방법으로 유한요소법과 강체요소법 등이 있으나, 이들 해석법은 접합부의 거동을 정확히 반영하지 못하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 패널은 강체적 거동을 하고, 판널과 판널 사이의 접합부는 고체적 거동을 가정하는 강체-고체 복합모델(Coupled Model by Rigid and Solid bodies)에 의한 해석법을 제안하며, 간단한 모델의 예를 통해 검증하였다.

  • 불연속성암반을 수치해석하는 방법으로 여러 가지 모델들이 제안되었다. 따라서 실제 구조물 설계에 적용함에 있어서 많은 혼란이 야기될 수도 있어 이들 모델들의 비교.검토에 대한 연구가 필요하게 되었다. 암반을 모델링하는 방법은 암석과 불연속면을 개별로 취급하는 방법과 의사연속체(疑似連續 )로 취급하는 등가연속체(等價連續 ) 모델링 등 크게 두가지로 구분할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 후자의 등가연속체 모델 즉 (1) 크랙텐서모델, (2) 등가체적 결손 모델, (3) 손상모델, (4) 미소구조모델 (병렬모델 및 직렬모델), (5) 규질화모델 등을 서로 비교하였다. 이들 모델 대부분은 주로 대표요소용적상에서의 불연속면에 기인한 변형율 및 응력장을 다루고 있었다. 마지막으로 크랙을 포함하는 세벤트몰타르 공시체를 사용한 실내시험 결과와 비교하므로서 이들 모델의 특성을 명확히 하였다.의 특성을 명확히 하였다.

Modeling of a rockburst related to anomalously low friction effects in great depth

  • A rockburst is a common disaster in deep-tunnel excavation engineering, especially for high-geostress areas. An anomalously low friction effect is one of the most important inducements of rockbursts. To elucidate the correlation between an anomalously low friction effect and a rockburst, we establish a two-dimensional prediction model that considers the discontinuous structure of a rock mass. The degree of freedom of the rotation angle is introduced, thus the motion equations of the blocks under the influence of a transient disturbing force are acquired according to the interactions of the blocks. Based on the two-dimensional discontinuous block model of deep rock mass, a rockburst prediction model is established, and the initiation process of ultra-low friction rockburst is analyzed. In addition, the intensity of a rockburst, including the location, depth, area, and velocity of ejection fragments, can be determined quantitatively using the proposed prediction model. Then, through a specific example, the effects of geomechanical parameters such as the different principal stress ratios, the material properties, a dip of principal stress on the occurrence form and range of rockburst are analyzed. The results indicate that under dynamic disturbance, stress variation on the structural surface in a deep rock mass may directly give rise to a rockburst. The formation of rockburst is characterized by three stages: the appearance of cracks that result from the tension or compression failure of the deformation block, the transformation of strain energy of rock blocks to kinetic energy, and the ejection of some of the free blocks from the surrounding rock mass. Finally, the two-dimensional rockburst prediction model is applied to the construction drainage tunnel project of Jinping II hydropower station. Through the comparison with the field measured rockburst data and UDEC simulation results, it shows that the model in this paper is in good agreement with the actual working conditions, which verifies the accuracy of the model in this paper.

탈크 및 유리단섬유로 강화된 폴리프로필렌 복합재료의 기계적 물성 예측 모델 개발 (Development of a Prediction Model for the Mechanical Properties of Polypropylene Composites Reinforced by Talc and Short Glass Fibers)

  • 본 연구에서는 입자형태인 두 가지 이상의 강화제가 기지 내에 무작위로 분포하여 하이브리드 복합재료를 이룰 때, 강화제의 함유량에 따른 복합재료의 인장강도 및 탄성계수를 예측할 수 있는 이론 모델을 제안하였다. 이를 위하여 연속적인 두 강화제가 기지 내에 평행하게 분포한 복합재료 모델에 입자형태의 한 가지 강화제가 무작위하게 분포한 복합재료 모델을 수정 적용하였다. 본 연구에서 제안한 모델의 정확성과 타당성을 논의하기 위해, 산업체에서 널리 쓰이고 있는 폴리프로필렌을 기지로 하고, 탈크와 유리단섬유를 서로 다른 강화제로 한 복합재료를 제작하여 인장강도 및 탄성계수를 측정하였다. 인장강도 값을 예측하는 경우, 이전의 이론 모델이 실험 측정값과 7배 이상의 오차를 보이는 반면 본 연구의 모델은 비슷한 값을 예측하였다. 탄성계수의 경우에도 본 연구의 모델은 비교적 정확하게 실험 측정 값을 예측할 수 있었다.

  • The application of Terzaghi's theory of consolidation for analysing the settlement of multi-layered soils is not strictly valid because the theory involves an assumption that the soil is homogeneous. The settlement of stratified soils with confined aquifer can be analysed using numerical techniques whereby the governing differential equation is replaced by 2-dimensional finite difference approximations. The problems of discontinuous layer interface are very important in the algorithm and programming for the analysis of multi-layered consolidation using a numerical analysis, finite difference method(F.D.M.). Better results can be obtained by the process for discontinuous layer interface, since it can help consolidation analysis to model the actual ground The purpose of this paper provides an efficient computer algorithm based on numerical analysis using finite difference method(F.D.M) which account for multi-layered soils with confined aquifer to determine the degree of consolidation and excess pore pressures relative to time and positions more realistically.

  • The sliding mode control in an effective method to eatablish robustness against parameter variation and disturbance. But. In sliding mode strategy, the control function is discontinuous on the hyperplane. However the discontinuous change in control structure caves the controller input to chaffer and gives non-zero steady state error. Consequently, a multiloop feedback control system supplemented by a complelmentary controller is used to improved the drive performence of a DC servo motor and reduce sensitivity to parameter variation, nonlinear effects, and other disturbances.

  • The tracking control problem of a flexible manipulator with a prismatic joint along a given path is discussed. The nondimensionalization of the elastic part of the manipulator makes it possible to model such a flexible manipulator. For a discontinuous velocity trajectory, an optimal control theory has been applied to formulate the problem. The optimal scheme is given to find the input commands(e.g., joint torques) necessary to produce a, specified end effector motion. Simulated results show the potential use of this scheme for a discontinuous velocity trajectory control.
