Background: The aim was to estimate the differences between pulmonary disability grades according to the spirometry reference equations (the Korean equation and the Morris equation). Methods: Spirometry was performed on 16,916 male and 1,353 female special examination for pneumoconiosis, in the period of 2007~2009. Changes in predictive values for forced expiratory volume in one second ($FEV_1$), forced vital capacity (FVC) and $FEV_1$/FVC and in disability grade were evaluated using both equations. Results: Mean FVCs for men and women were 4,218.7 mL and 2,801.5 mL in predictive values after the application of the Korean equation, and 3,763.9 mL and 2,395.6 mL after the Morris equation, respectively. Compared with the Morris equation, the Korean equation showed 10.8% and 14.5% of excesses for men and women (p<0.001). Mean $FEV_1s$ for men and women were 3,102.5 mL and 2,107.1 mL in the Korean equation, and 2,667.8 mL and 1,699.6 mL in the Morris equation, respectively. Compared with the Morris equation, the Korean equation showed 14.0% and 19.3% of excesses for men and women (p<0.001). Men and women who showed the changes of disability grades using the Korean equation in place of the Morris equation were 23.9% (4,052/16,916) and 22.9% (311/1,353) on FVC, and 23.1% (3,913/16,916) and 10.7% (145/1,353) on $FEV_1$. Conclusion: Applying different reference equations for spirometry has resulted in changes for disability grades in special examination for pneumoconiosis.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the association of functional disability, ego integrity and depressive symptoms, and analyze the mediating effect of ego integrity among the elderly, residing in the long-term care facilities. The data were collected by using non-random purposive and convenient sampling methods and 247 elderly who reside in the nursing home care, located in Daegu city and Kyungpook provinces participated in this study. Findings of this study indicates that there are statistically significant relationships among functional disability, ego integrity and depressive symptoms of participants. In addition, the mediating effect of ego integrity on the relationship between functional disability and depressive symptoms is statistically significant and shows partial mediating effect. Based on the findings of this study, possible practice implications for improving functional and mental health of the elderly in residential care home and recommendation for further study were provided.
This study examined the effects of parenting stress on the quality of life in parents of children with disability, and moderating effects of welfare service perception in the process. This study conducted a survey to 327 parents who rear such children in Chungnam, Chungbuk and Daejeon provinces. This study utilized SPSS 18.0 for analysis, and the main results of this study were as follows. First, the level of parenting stress is shown higher level in parents who rear the children with developmental disabilities. The level of welfare service perception and quality of life is shown higher level in parents who rear the children with physical disabilities. Second, common influential factors of life quality were parenting stress, welfare service perception, sex of parents, disability degree and residential area. For parents who rear the children with developmental disabilities, education level of parents and for parents who rear the children with physical disabilities, age of Children show to be influential. Third, welfare service perception is shown to be statistically significant so that moderating effects is found in the relationship between the parenting stress and quality of life. Based on such empirical analysis results, this study suggested concrete and comprehensive working strategies to improve quality of life in parents of children with disabilities.
We developed a communication device for person with serious disability to use slight movement. This device is developed mainly for patients suffering from ALS or a cerebral infarction. They often have communication difficulty because of deterioration of muscle functions. A feature of this device is that slight movements of user's finger, eyes or lips can be detected by using a vision sensor. Due to the features of the vision sensor, it is quite easy even for person with serious disability to use a communication device. By the field test it is confirmed that the vision sensors have superior performances as an input device for communication device. Experiments to use an EMG (electromyography) sensor and a rotary sensor are also tested to compare the performances.
The disabled population is a vulnerable group, having very complex medical conditions, but little is known about differences in the level of access by type of disability. This study was performed to investigate the differences of health care utilization by the type of disability. The database was constructed from registry of the disabled and health insurance and medical aid claims data submitted to the Korea Health Insurance Cooperation during in the year 2003. The disability classified three groups according to the Disabled Welfare Act; physically disability with external dysfunction, physically disability with organic disease, and mentally disability. There were huge differences in health care utilization by the type of disability. For the inpatient care, those with a mental disability were more likely to utilize health care services in terms of average visit number of medical facilities and visit days per case, but the treatment amount per case was the highest in physically disabled with organic disease. For the outpatient care, those who the physically disabled with organic disease were more likely to utilize health care services in terms of average visit number of medical facilities, treatment amount per case, and the treatment days per case. Also, those who physically disabled with organic disease were more likely to utilize general hospital for both inpatient and outpatient care, and spent more out-of-pocket expenditure. As the number of persons with disabilities rises, the need to consider new approaches to protecting their health grows increasingly. Especially, Korean health care system should be refined to be more responsive to the needs of the type of disability.
This study examines how disability pride of people having acquired visual impairment can be constructed. The theme is explored with the Japanese TV drama "Challenged". The paradigms regarding construction of disability pride and acceptance of disability are fundamentally different. In this context it can be said that a criticism of disability acceptance theory has something with a criticism of medical model of disability. It is main character Hanawa and chairman of teachers, and principal who were noticeable specifically at the point of forming disability pride, and these characters show a common feature that social idealism is embodied in their awareness. Other characters of the drama show a change of their consciousness to social idealism. As a conclusion this study suggests importances of humanistic and social scientific analysis as well as of educational effects achieved by means of drama.
The study was design to examine the degree of disability and the moderating effect of discrimination experiences on the job satisfaction of the disabled workers' disability acceptance. The 8th year data from the Panel Survey of Employment for the Disabled was used to extracting 2270 disable wage-workers who met the study purpose as a sample. The moderate effect was verified by using regression analysis. As a result, first, the disability acceptance of disabled wage workers presented a positive effect on job satisfaction. Second, the effect of disability acceptance on job satisfaction differed by the degree of disability. Third, the effect of disability acceptance on job satisfaction differed by the discrimination experiences. Which refers that the study identify the cushion of degree of disability and the discrimination experiences, which play an important role in the job satisfaction of the disabled wage workers. Therefore, this study suggests that it can be used as a practical implication and basic data for the program developments improving the job satisfaction of disabled wage workers.
Objectives: Agent Orange TCDD has been related to serious diseases among Korean veterans who were exposed to it. Decades after the end of the war, however, its effects are still being debated. The object of this study was to examine various unmet needs raised among Agent Orange exposed veterans and their families and to find grounds of a new welfare policy for providing alternative legislation. Methods: Literatures concerning Agent Orange, TCDD, the associated diseases, compensation for veterans and Supreme Court sentencing were searched using PubMed, ProQuest, press news and relevant homepages. Results: Agent Orange exposed veterans are eligible for various benefits from the government, including disability compensation for diseases associated with exposure. The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs has classified certain diseases into two categories, Agent Orange sequela diseases and sequela suspect diseases and has provided differential benefits based on separated laws. Big differences exist in benefits to veterans and their families between the two laws. The absence of definite standards to classify the Agent Orange associated diseases was confirmed by recent Supreme Court sentencing which ruled in favor of US manufacturers. Conclusion: It appears that the evidence for cause and effect of Agent Orange related diseases would never be perfect. The results suggest a need to change welfare principles from presumptive or indefinite disease basis to exposure experiences combined with integrated disability evaluation. We propose to extend eligibility by enacting a new law for Agent Orange exposed Korean veterans.

While there have been numerous studies on various issues of aging of the individuals and the population, little is known about the process and consequences of aging of the disabled. Aging is irreversible for the disabled as well as for the not-disabled. With the advances of age, the disabled confront double jeopardy from disability and old age. This study aims to explore the meaning of aging and death for 40s and 50s living with disability for more than 20 years. It utilizes the data set collected through focus groups discussions of the disabled The cases in our analysis are composed of the disabled capable of articulating their feelings and thoughts. Thus, they are selected from the less privileged ones. The analysis shows that aging of the disabled, often involving secondary disability, overwhelms their current disability. Nonetheless, it does not necessary mean that they become an ordinary elderly person. Rather they still feel exclusion from the elderly for their disability. As getting older they turn to face social barrier for both disability and old age. Also, they are trying to live their present lives in full while accepting the presence of death Our findings are hoped to help to understand how the disabled get old and view their death in their own way.
