Effects of the increase rate of Reynold number on near-wall turbulent structures are investigated by performing direct numerical simulations of transient turbulent channel flows. The simulations were started with the fully-developed turbulent channel flow at $Re_{\tau}=180$, then temporal accelerations were applied. During the acceleration, the Reynolds number, based on the channel width and the bulk mean velocity, increased almost linearly from 5600 to 13600. To elucidate the effects of flow acceleration rates on near-wall turbulence, a wide range of durations for acceleration were selected. Various turbulent statistics and instantaneous flow fields revealed that the rapid increase of flow rate invoked bypass-transition like phenomena in the transient flow. By contrast, the flow evolved progressively and the bypass transition did not clearly occur during mild flow acceleration. The present study suggests that the transition to the new turbulent regime in transient channel flow is mainly affected by the flow acceleration rate, not by the ratio of the final and initial Reynolds numbers.

The purpose of this study is to provide response methods to minimize the damage from chemical terrorism in a naturally ventilated indoor system using several types of dispersion simulations. Three chemical warfare agents such as sarin(GB), phosgene and chlorine gas which have high potential to be used in terror or to be involved with accidents were selected in this simulation. Fire dynamic simulation based on Large Eddy Simulation which is effective because of less computational effort and detailed expression of the dispersion flow was adopted to describe the dispersion behavior of these agents. When the vent speed is 0.005m/s, the heights of 0.1 agent mass fraction are 0.9m for sarin, 1.0m for phosgene and 1.1m for chlorine gas, and the maximum mass fraction are 0.27 for all three agents. However, when the vent speed is increased to 0.05m/s, the heights of 0.1 agent mass fraction become 1.6m for all three agents and maximum mass fraction inside the room increase to 0.70 for sarin, 0.58 for phosgene and 0.53 for chlorine gas. It is shown that molecular weight of the agents has an important role for dispersion, and it is important to install ventilation system with height less than 1.6m to minimize the damage from chemical toxicity.

Direct numerical simulation was carried out to study the vortical structures of the flow around a wall-mounted cube in a channel at Re=1,000 and Re=3,500 based on cubic height and bulk mean velocity. The cubic obstacle is situated in the entrance region of the channel flow where the boundary layers are developing. Upstream of the obstacle, steady and unsteady laminar horseshoe vortex systems are observed at Re=1,000 and Re=3,500, respectively; the near-wake flow is turbulent in both cases. The flow separates at each leading sharp edge of the cube, and subsequent vortex roll-up is noticed in the corresponding free-shear layer. The vortex shedding from the upper leading edge (upper vortices) and that from the two lateral leading edges (lateral vortices) are both quasi-periodic and their frequencies are computed. The upper and lateral vortices further develop into hairpin and Λ vortices, respectively. A series of instantaneous contours of the second invariant of velocity gradient tensor helps us identify spatial and temporal behaviors of the vortices in detail. The results indicate that the length and time scales of the vortical structures at Re=3,500 are much shorter than those at Re:1,000. Correlations between the upper and lateral vortices are also reported.

Pumping performances of a helical molecular drag dump(MDP) and of a radial MDPs are numerically analyzed by using the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method. A helical- and radial-MDP have rotating pumping channels cut on a cylinder and on a disk, respectively. For a helical MDP, the present results agree quantitatively with the previously known numerical results. For radial MDPs, both of the Type 1 (having pumping channels cut on the stationary disk) and of the Type 2 (having pumping channels cut on the rotating disk) are analyzed to predict their performances for various parameters, i.e., the radius of curvature center of the channel wall, the depth of the channel, the clearance between housing and disk, and the rotating speed. The results show that the performance of the Type 2 is superior to that of the Type 1, and that for all types the pumping efficiency decreases as the clearance increases. Also, the radial type MDP has larger leakage losses in the direction of pumping channel than does the helical one.
Direct Numerical Simulation(DNS) of turbulent mass transfer in fully developed turbulent pipe flow has been performed to study the effect of wall boundary conditions on the concentration fields at $Re_{\tau}$=180 based on friction velocity and pipe radius. Fully developed turbulent pipe flows for Sc=0.71 are studied with two different wall boundary conditions, namely, constant mass flux and constant wall concentration. The mean concentration profiles and turbulent mass fluxes obtained from the present DNS are in good agreement with the previous numerical results currently available. To investigate the effects of wall boundary condition on the turbulent mass transfer, the mean concentration profile, root-mean-square of concentration fluctuation, turbulent mass fluxes and higher-order statistics(Skewness and Flatness factor) are compared for the two cases. Furthermore, the budgets of turbulent mass fluxes and concentration variance were computed and analyzed to elucidate the effects of wall boundary conditions on the turbulent mass transfer.

Erosion-corrosion in a pipe system often occurs at fittings, valves, and weld beads where flow separation and reattachment yield high turbulence intensity. Thus identifying their correlations would be the first step towards resolving the erosion-corrosion problems associated with industrial applications. Bremhorst of the Univ. of Queensland, Australia, proposed that a rotating cylinder with surface roughness (two backward-facing steps periodically mounted on a circular cylinder) be an economical and tractable tool which can generate extreme flow conditions for erosion-corrosion study. In this work, DNS has been carried out for turbulent flows around the same rotating cylinder as his experimental apparatus. Our result shows that a region of intense turbulence intensity and high wall-shear stress fluctuation is formed along the cylinder surface in the recirculating region behind the step, where high mass-transfer capacity is also experimentally observed. Since corrosion is mass-transfer controlled, our finding sheds light on the direction of future corrosion research.
Numerical and experimental investigations are peformed for the rarefied gas flows in pumping channels of a helical-type drag pump. Modern turbomolecular pumps include a drag stage in the discharge side, operating roughly in $10^{-2}{\sim}10Torr$. The flow occurring in the pumping channel develops from the molecular transition to slip flow traveling downstream. Two different numerical methods are used in this analysis: the first one is a continuum approach in solving the Navier-Stokes equations with slip boundary conditions, and the second one is a stochastic particle approach through the use of the direct simulation Monte Carlo(DSMC) method. The flow in a pumping channel is three-dimensional(3D), and the main difficulty in modeling a 3D case comes from the rotating frame of reference. Thus, trajectories of particles are no longer straight lines. In the Present DSMC method, trajectories of particles are calculated by integrating a system of differential equations including the Coriolis and centrifugal forces. Our study is the first instance to analyze the rarefied gas flows in rotating frame in the presence of noninertial effects.

In recent, flood inundation damages by hydraulic structure failures have increased drastically and thus a variety of countermeasures were needed to minimize such damages. A real-time flood inundation prediction technique is essential to protect and mitigate flood inundation damages. In the context of real time flood inundation modeling, this study aims to develop a grid based two-dimensional numerical method for flood inundation modeling using globally-available DEM data: SRTM with $90m{\times}90m$ spatial resolution. The newly-developed model guarantees computational efficiency in terms of geometric data processing by direct application of DEM for flood inundation modeling and also have good compatibility with various types of raster data when compared to a commercial model such as FLUMEN. The model, which employed the leap-frog algorithm to solve shallow water and continuity equations, can simulate inundating flow from channel to lowland and also returning flow from lowland to channel by comparing water levels between channel and lowland in real time. We applied the model to simulate the BaekSan levee break in the Nam river during a flood period from August 10 to 13, 2002. The simulation results had good agreements with the field-surveyed data in terms of inundated area and also showed physically-acceptable velocity vector maps with respect to inundating and returning flows.
An evaluation method for flutter derivatives is proposed, using indicial functions of structural members produced by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Flutter derivatives are obtained by Fourier integration of indicial functions. Instead of direct simulation of oscillating objects, only the calculation of time-dependent lift and moment variations of fixed objects with constant attack angle are necessary. The Finite Element Method (FEM) is developed as a tool for the numerical method. For two rectangular sections having different aspect ratios, the numerical analysis and wind tunnel test are carried out to inspect the adequacy of this study. The results proved to be good, and they could be used for a preliminary design.

A brushless direct current (BLDC) motor electronically performs rectification without brushes. It therefore does not have the typical mechanical friction contacts between the brushes and commutators. The BLDC motor has the advantages of high speed, low noise, and electronic noise reduction in addition to high durability and reliability. Therefore, it is mainly used in electric vehicles and electric equipment. However, iron loss and copper loss due to long-term use induce temperature increases in the motor, which reduces its performance and life. The temperatures of the stator and permanent magnet are predicted to be $62.3^{\circ}C$ and $32.2^{\circ}C$, respectively. This study shows the enhanced temperature distribution in a 600 W BLDC motor using unsteady and three-dimensional (3D) numerical investigations validated with experimental data.
