Injection molding product is commonly used for reducing the weight of automotive vehicle, and door regulator guide rail with plastic material is also made by injection molding process. In order to improve the injection molding performance of plastic regulator guide rail, optimal molding condition is suggested by numerical simulation and DOE after obtaining the sensitivity of parameters for regulator rail manufacturing on warpage and fill time. Furthermore, multi direct gate method and optimal cooling circuit are introduced to get the uniform temperature distribution and better cooling efficiency in molding product. The effect of the proposed design on the injection molding performance is verified by the test of prototype of plastic regulator guide rail.
Five previously-tested reinforced concrete frames were modelled using a nonlinear finite element analysis procedure to demonstrate the accurate response simulations for seismically-deficient frames through pushover analyses. The load capacities, story drifts, and failure modes were simulated. This procedure accounts for the effects of shear failures and the shear-axial force interaction, and thus is suitable for modeling seismically-deficient frames. It is demonstrated that a comprehensive analysis method with a capability of simulating material constitutive response and significant second-order mechanisms is essential in achieving a satisfactory response simulation. It is further shown that such analysis methods are invaluable in determining the expected seismic response, safety, and failure mode of the frame structures for a performance-based seismic evaluation. In addition, a new computer program was developed to aid researchers and engineers in the direct displacement-based seismic design process by assessing whether a frame structure meets the code-based performance requirements by analyzing the analysis results. As such, the proposed procedure facilitates the performance-based design of new buildings as well as the numerical assessment and retrofit design of existing buildings. A sample frame analysis was presented to demonstrate the application and verification of the approach.
The optimum grillage design belongs to nonlinear constrained optimization problem. The determination of beam scantlings for the grillage structure is a very crucial matter out of whole structural design process. The performance of optimization methods, based on penalty functions, is highly problem-dependent and many methods require additional tuning of some variables. This additional tuning is the influences of penalty coefficient, which depend strongly on the degree of constraint violation. Moreover, Binary-coded Genetic Algorithm (BGA) meets certain difficulties when dealing with continuous and/or discrete search spaces with large dimensions. With the above reasons, Real-coded Micro-Genetic Algorithm ($R{\mu}GA$) is proposed to find the optimum beam scantlings of the grillage structure without handling any of penalty functions. $R{\mu}GA$ can help in avoiding the premature convergence and search for global solution-spaces, because of its wide spread applicability, global perspective and inherent parallelism. Direct stiffness method is used as a numerical tool for the grillage analysis. In optimization study to find minimum weight, sensitivity study is carried out with varying beam configurations. From the simulation results, it has been concluded that the proposed $R{\mu}GA$ is an effective optimization tool for solving continuous and/or discrete nonlinear real-world optimization problems.

Adaptive output feedback control technique using Neural Networks(NN) is proposed for uncertain nonlinear Multi-Input Multi-Output(MIMO) systems. Modified Dynamic Inversion Model(MDIM) is introduced to decouple uncertain nonlinearities from inversion-based control input. MDIM consists of approximated dynamic inversion model and inversion model error. One NN is applied to compensate the MDIM of the system. The output of the NN augments the tracking controller which is based upon a filtered error approximation with online weight adaptation laws which are derived from Lyapunov's direct method to guarantee tracking performance and ultimate boundedness. Several numerical results are illustrated in the simulation of Van der Pol system and unmanned helicopter with model uncertainties.
Sinusoidal wavy channel is one of the most commonly used devices in the industry for achieving mixing and heat transfer. Here we report on results obtained from the DNS of flow inside the wavy channel performed using the finite volume technique. As a primary stage to obtain the optimal design for heat transfer and mixing, this study observed the basic flow structures in a wavy channel. The mass flow rate is kept constant with friction Reynolds number of $Re_{\tau}$ = 140 . Time- and space-averaged and instantaneous flow fields are illustrated to observe the flow structures. Although the direct comparison of results between turbulent wavy and flat channel is somehow difficult due to the different flow phenomena derived from different configuration, here the mean streamwise velocity and RMS of velocities at same $Re_{\tau}$ of two different channels are compared. The basic difference between wavy and flat channel flow is the existence of small scale wall vortices along the walls in a wavy channel. These vortices make flow more complex, which will accompany the increase of heat transfer, pressure drop and drag.

Reliability analysis of composite structures considering random variation of involved parameters is quite important as composite materials revealed large statistical variations in their mechanical properties. The reliability analysis of such structures by the first order reliability method (FORM) and Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) based approach involves repetitive evaluations of performance function. The response surface method (RSM) based metamodeling technique has emerged as an effective solution to such problems. In the application of metamodeling for uncertainty quantification and reliability analysis of composite structures; the finite element model is usually formulated by either classical laminate theory or first order shear deformation theory. But such theories show significant error in calculating the structural responses of composite structures. The present study attempted to apply the RSM based MCS for reliability analysis of composite shell structures where the surrogate model is constructed using higher order shear deformation theory (HSDT) of composite structures considering the uncertainties in the material properties, load, ply thickness and radius of curvature of the shell structure. The sensitivity of responses of the shell is also obtained by RSM and finite element method based direct approach to elucidate the advantages of RSM for response sensitivity analysis. The reliability results obtained by the proposed RSM based MCS and FORM are compared with the accurate reliability analysis results obtained by the direct MCS by considering two numerical examples.

In this paper, we carried out the numerical examination of the initial value setting-up method to extend the range of optimal step parameter in a adaptive system which is controlled by LMS algorithm. For initial value setting-up methods, the general method which select the initial value randomly and the other method which applies the approximate value obtained from the direct method to initial value, were used. And then, we compared to the ranges of step parameter setting, the convergence speeds of mean-square-error, and the stabilities during the convergence process when the initial values were applied to the optimal directivity synthesis problem. According to the numerical simulation results, the initial value setting-up method by means of the direct method provides wider range for the step parameter, more efficient capability for convergence and stability, and more error correction ability than the general method.

Direct numerical simulations were carried out for turbulent channel flows with $Re_{\tau}$ = 180, 395 and 590 to investigate the turbulent flow structure related to the Reynolds shear stress. By examining the probability density function, the second quadrant (Q2) events with the largest contribution to the mean Reynolds shear stress were identified. The change in the inclination angle of Q2 events varies with wall units in $y^+<50$ and with the channel half height in y/h > 0.5. Conditionally averaged flow fields for the Q2 event show that the flow structures associated with Reynolds shear stress are a quasi-streamwise vortex in the buffer layer and a hairpin-shaped vortex in the outer layer. Three-dimensional visualization of the distribution of high Reynolds shear stress reveals that the organization of hairpin vortices in the outer layer having a size of 1.5~3 h is associated with large-scale motions with high Reynolds shear stress in the outer layer.

This paper presents a new simplified harmonics extraction algorithm based on the synchronous reference frame (SRF) for an indirect current controlled (ICC) three-level neutral point diode clamped (NPC) inverter-based shunt active power filter (SAPF). The shunt APF is widely accepted as one of the most effective current harmonics mitigation tools due to its superior adaptability in dynamic state conditions. In its controller, the SRF algorithm which is derived based on the direct-quadrature (DQ) theory has played a significant role as a harmonics extraction algorithm due to its simple implementation features. However, it suffers from significant delays due to its dependency on a numerical filter and unnecessary computation workloads. Moreover, the algorithm is mostly implemented for the direct current controlled (DCC) based SAPF which operates based on a non-sinusoidal reference current. This degrades the mitigation performances since the DCC based operation does not possess exact information on the actual source current which suffers from switching ripples problems. Therefore, three major improvements are introduced which include the development of a mathematical based fundamental component identifier to replace the numerical filter, the removal of redundant features, and the generation of a sinusoidal reference current. The proposed algorithm is developed and evaluated in MATLAB / Simulink. A laboratory prototype utilizing a TMS320F28335 digital signal processor (DSP) is also implemented to validate effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Both simulation and experimental results are presented. They show significant improvements in terms of total harmonic distortion (THD) and dynamic response when compared to a conventional SRF algorithm.
